Abstract

Reading is a crucial foundational skill that all students acquire, as it is necessary for all learning activities. Reading is a basic skill that students must acquire in education, especially early learners. This study aims to analyze what reading activities use the Montessori method at Singaraja Montessori School and how the teacher carries out these activities. A qualitative descriptive method was used, and data collection was carried out through documentation, class observations, and interviews. Data were analyzed using the Thematic analysis model by Braun and Clarke (2006), which involves six steps: familiarizing data, generating initial codes, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining themes, and producing the report. The findings show five reading activities using the Montessori method: phonic knowledge, syllable knowledge, picture cards, reading comprehension, and reading in the corner. Activities are carried out in three stages: pre-activity, whilst-activity, and post-activity. In implementation, personalized and self-directed learning are used as strategies to adapt to students' needs. This study concludes that reading activities implemented using Montessori-based instruction are designed to gradually support children's reading development in accordance with the principles of Montessori education, which emphasize independent learning and exploration.

Abstract

The integration of first and second languages in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, termed translanguaging, is gaining recognition for its potential to improve comprehension and student engagement. This study investigates students’ perceptions of translanguaging in Bali, a unique multilingual setting, and examines its correlation with their English learning achievement. Bali’s sociolinguistic environment, where students frequently use Balinese, Indonesian, and English, offers an ideal context to explore this phenomenon. This study employed a correlational research design, involving 65 fourth-semester students aged 18 to 22, to assess perceptions of translanguaging through a structured questionnaire and their English achievement through standardized tests. Descriptive statistics showed that students held positive perceptions of translanguaging, finding it beneficial for understanding course content and encouraging participation. However, Pearson correlation analysis revealed a minimal, non-significant correlation between students’ positive perceptions and their English learning achievement (r = 0.039, sig. = 0.758). While translanguaging created a supportive and engaging learning environment, its direct influence on academic achievement was limited. These findings suggest that although translanguaging may foster an inclusive and interactive classroom setting, it does not significantly impact measurable language achievement. This study contributes valuable insights into the role of multilingual practices in EFL education and encourages further research on their complex effects on learning outcomes.

The result was a graphic novel as an attractive literacy media that was developed for assisting eighth grade junior high school students’ literacy skills. Based on the content validity judgment, the graphic novel was highly relevant to the twelve criteria of a good graphic novel with minor revision. The quality judgment was utilized to determine whether or not the graphic novel was already qualified to serve as a good literacy source by using expert judgment. There were two expert judges and twelve users who took role in judging the quality of the graphic novel. Based on the quality judgment, the graphic novel was categorized as excellent media. Thus, the graphic novel was categorized as excellent media for assisting eighth grade students’ literacy skills

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the writing anxiety experienced by eleventh-grade students in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Bali. By conducting a quantitative research method, this research involved 76 students as the participant of the study. The research employed an adapted questionnaire from Cheng (2004), consisting of 27 designed statements. The result revealed that many students face challenges with writing anxiety in English. The findings showed that linguistic challenges, such as concerns about using expressions and sentence patterns incorrectly, and time constraints like feeling stressed under time pressure, significantly contribute to writing anxiety. Additionally, the positive aspect of the study demonstrated that students actively work to minimize mistakes in their writing, emphasizing the importance of accuracy in managing writing anxiety which may imply the motivation to learn English.
