Abstract

This research was conducted to analyze the code-switching phenomenon on Indonesian boy band and girl band songs especially the type of code-switching by using Poplack’s (1980) theory and the function of code-switching by using the theory from Apple and Musyken (2005). This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data source were songs from 2 Indonesian boy bands and 2 Indonesian girl bands as these bands often use two languages in most of their songs. The object of this research was 9 songs from 4 Indonesian boy bands and girl bands. This research also used the observation technique to collect the data that was gathered from the YouTube platform. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. The results showed that the most common type of code-switching found in Indonesian boy band and girl band songs was intra-sentential switching followed by the second most common type of code-switching inter-sentential switching. Only 1 data was found as tag-switching. This research provides insight of the use of code-switching in Indonesian songs, particularly on the types and the functions.

Abstract

This study explored parental perceptions of their involvement in supporting children's English literacy in grades 4th, 5th, and 6th by using stories as reading media at home. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-method approach, this study involved parents from two junior high schools in Buleleng, Bali. The data were analyzed descriptively using the PAIT (Psychometric Analysis of Item Theory) and CTT (Classical Test Theory) methods, which focused on the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. The results showed that parents had positive perceptions of their engagement in developing children's literacy at home. The cognitive engagement aspect showed a very positive perception, while the behavioral engagement and emotional engagement aspects were classified in the positive category. These findings highlight the need for literacy strategies that not only improve reading skills, but also strengthen children's emotional bonds. Educators need to support parents in balancing academic expectations which fostering children’s love of reading. In addition, policies should promote literacy as a shared responsibility between schools and families, with programs that equip parents as literacy role models from an early age.

Abstract

This literature review explores the intertwined roles of Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE), game-based learning (GBL), student engagement, and speaking proficiency in the context of foreign language education. FLE has emerged as a vital affective factor that enhances language acquisition by fostering positive emotions. Game-based learning tools, especially Wordwall, have been shown to increase classroom engagement and reduce speaking anxiety by providing interactive and learner-centered experiences. The review summarizes the advantages of incorporating Wordwall into language learning, particularly in developing vocabulary and encouraging speaking practice. Additionally, it explores how enjoyment facilitates deeper engagement—behavioral, emotional, and cognitive—ultimately contributing to improved speaking proficiency.

Abstract

This study explores the perception and practices of English teachers in implementing technology-mediated task-based language teaching. The study adopted a sequential explanatory mix-research design. The data were collected through questionnaires, classroom observation, and interviews. This data was analyzed to identify the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application. the findings reveal that teacher possess a strong understanding of TMTBLT principles and recognize its benefits. However, practical implementation is constrained by external challenges, such as limited access to technology and large class sizes. The teachers frequently utilize tools like PowerPoint and YouTube. Managing collaborative tasks in large classes is often faced with unequal participation. It highlights the difficulty in applying the student-centered method effectively. This found that the successful implementation of TMTBLT requires systemic improvement in infrastructure and targeted professional development. By addressing this limitation, the teacher can align their positive perception with effective classroom practice. The study emphasizes the importance of supporting teachers to fully realize the potential of TMTBLT in creating engaging, collaborative, and meaningful learning experiences for students.

The goals of this study is to find out the translanguaging types, functions, and language use by the lecturer. The translanguaging practiced by the lecturer were observed through 11 meetings. Observations were conducted to find out how the lecturer practiced translanguaging in the class. With the use of field notes and observation sheets, the data were collected and then presented in the form of table and diagram. The observations were focused on discovering translanguaging frequency, types, functions and languages use. A deductive thematic analysis was employed to analyze the research objectives. This research shows that translanguaging was practiced frequently by the lecturer in terms of pre-activity, main activity, and post-activity. There are 8 (eight) types of translanguaging found along the study that specifically used for specific teaching functions. Moreover, this finding also covers that the lecturer used 3 (three) languages in translanguaging, including English, Indonesian, and Balinese. Abstract

QuillBot is a tool that influences the writing quality among higher students. This tool offers beneficial features that assist the development of academic writing ability among students. Therefore, this study aims to explore the assistance of QuillBot in academic writing among higher students. The researcher adopted the SLR (Systematic Literature Review) methodology proposed by Lame and Guillaume (2019). This method employs eight steps, from developing research questions to resulting interpretations. Those steps are conducted to determine whether the previous articles are appropriate and eligible. Ten articles were found that required the inclusion of the criteria. The articles were found in reputable resources such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, and Taylor & Francis. The findings revealed that QuillBot assists the students in creating minimum errors in writing by discovering grammatical errors, paraphrasing sentences for writing evaluation, avoiding plagiarism, and encouraging students’ motivation. Overall, the tool facilitates the students’ development of their academic writing ability. Additionally, the students’ positive perceptions of writing development support it. They showed language improvement, such as vocabulary development and grammatical ability. Therefore, QuillBot assists the students in powering their writing ability and minimizing their anxiety toward academic writing.

Abstract

Higher education institutions continue to face considerable challenges in accommodating students’ linguistic diversity and delivering complex learning materials in foreign languages. Limited foreign language proficiency often hinders students’ comprehension, while lecturers face difficulties in effectively explaining technical concepts in multilingual contexts. Rigid, single-language teaching approaches may further reduce the effectiveness of teaching and learning. This study aims to explore the types and functions of translanguaging practices implemented in a Technology for Teaching and Learning course. A qualitative research design was employed, with classroom observations conducted over ten sessions involving one lecturer and 23 students. Data were analyzed thematically using an established translanguaging categorization framework. The findings revealed seven out of eight identified types of translanguaging: Making Comparisons, Asking and Answering Questions, Explaining Concepts, Giving Directions, Making Observations, Agreeing, and Exclaiming, with affirming absent. Explaining Concepts emerged as the most dominant type, highlighting the role of translanguaging in clarifying technical terms and facilitating understanding of complex concepts. These practices served interpretive, managerial, and interactive functions and involved three languages: Indonesian, English, and Balinese. The study concludes that translanguaging holds strong potential as an inclusive and contextual pedagogical strategy, with implications for developing flexible multilingual learning models in higher education.

Abstract

While literacy serves as the foundation of language proficiency and a key predictor of academic success, its development depends on teacher and student readiness, parent involvement, and effective use of media such as stories. Previous studies show that story-based learning enhances comprehension and supports early reading, especially when sustained collaboration between teachers and parents is present. Due to the growing emphasis on early literacy and the integration of stories in language education, this study investigates the underexplored factors of teacher readiness, student readiness, and parent involvement in ensuring effective literacy development for young learners. The researchers employed a descriptive-quantitative research design using a survey. This study involved seven teachers, 202 students, and 124 parents as participants. Three questionnaires were used as the primary instruments to collect data. The data were analyzed descriptively using statistical descriptive analysis. The findings revealed that teacher readiness was very high, whereas students’ readiness and parents’ involvement were high for enhancing learner’s literacy development through story-based learning. Thus, it is concluded that the teachers have satisfying readiness, while the learners and parents hold high readiness and involvement that support literacy success. These results imply that all parties should work collaboratively to build young learners’ literacy skills, which are vital for academic accomplishment.
