Abstract

Current science learning still has limitations in discussion, information evaluation, and opportunities for in-depth practice, thus inhibiting the development of students' critical thinking skills. This study aims to explore the effect of PhET Simulation on the critical thinking skills of elementary school teacher candidates in science learning. PhET Simulation is an interactive media to support in-depth understanding and critical analysis of basic scientific concepts. This type of research is a quantitative Pre-Experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest Design approach, involving 43 elementary school teacher candidates. Data collection was carried out through a critical thinking skills test, including indicators of interpretation, analysis, evaluation, explanation, and self-regulation, which were applied before and after treatment. The statistical analysis results show a significant increase in students' critical thinking skills scores after using PhET Simulation. The paired T-Test test showed a significant difference, and the N-Gain test obtained a score of 0.3765, categorizing the increase to a moderate level, indicating that this simulation is quite effective in improving critical thinking skills. The increase in critical thinking skill scores can also be seen in the average pretest score, which is 74.09, increasing to 83.51 in the posttest score. This finding confirms that PhET Simulation can be used effectively in science learning and supports the development of students' analytical skills. Thus, it can be concluded that PhET Simulation has a positive impact on science learning and has the potential to be an important learning medium in building students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) is one of the most popular technologies used in the field of education. AR technology is widely used as a learning medium or to develop engaging, innovative textbooks for students. However, there is still much debate regarding the use of AR at various levels of education, starting from elementary school to the higher education level. This qualitative meta-analysis research explores the urgency of implementing AR technology in schools and the readiness of the main subjects of learning (teachers and students) to use AR in the classroom. The synthesis method used is the narrative review model. This synthesis model is used to analyze 100 research results in non-numeric data by identifying the research results documents found. The study results show that teachers at the elementary to high school level and lecturers at the higher education level feel that AR technology is crucial to implement in the learning process. However, from all levels, teachers' and lecturers' readiness to make AR-based learning tools still needs to be improved. In addition, another finding in this study is that the percentage of teachers in elementary school (52%) readiness to use AR technology is higher than that of lecturers in higher education (21%).

Abstract

Instilling tolerance through learning about cultural diversity remains a challenge due to its abstract nature for students, so technology-based learning media that can attract their attention and increase their engagement is needed. This study aims to develop and test the feasibility, practicality, and effectiveness of digital flipbook learning media containing cultural diversity in improving students' understanding and tolerance. This research is a research and development (R&D) study using the ADDIE model. The research subjects include 186 students and 7 fourth-grade elementary school teachers. Data were collected through interviews, observations, needs assessments, product validation, response questionnaires, comprehension tests, and tolerance character scales. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive quantitative methods and through paired sample t-tests, independent sample t-tests, and MANOVA. Validation results indicated that the media is highly suitable for use (subject matter experts = 85.2%; media experts = 95%). The media was deemed practical based on student and educator responses, with the highest score reaching the “very practical” category. Effectiveness tests showed significant differences in comprehension scores and tolerance character before and after using the digital flipbook (p < 0.005). MANOVA tests also indicated significant differences between the experimental and control groups simultaneously. Thus, the culturally-infused digital flipbook was proven effective in enhancing comprehension and fostering tolerance character, and is suitable for use as an innovative learning medium in elementary schools.

Abstract

Multicultural Indonesia has local wisdom as a marker of national identity, but rapid digitalization—accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic—has changed students' perceptions, rendering cultural values obsolete. This study describes a strategy for cultural preservation by integrating local wisdom into intra- and extracurricular activities in elementary schools. A qualitative design was implemented through observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Participants (students, teachers, and principals) were purposively selected in educational units that instill cultural values. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana interactive model (reduction, presentation, and verification) and validated through the triangulation of sources and techniques. These local wisdom-based activities foster students' cultural identity while enhancing cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. The implications of these findings include the need for ongoing policy support, targeted teacher training, and the judicious use of technology to maintain cultural content in digital classrooms. The results indicate that schools function as agents of cultural transmission, as local content is integrated into Javanese Language, Fine Arts, and Civic Education subjects. At the same time, Pencak Silat and Karawitan expand their practices into extracurricular areas. These findings underscore the importance of revitalizing local wisdom as a foundation for character education in today's globalized world.
