Abstract

Urbanization in nature has two meanings. Firstly, it means migrating people from rural to urban. Second, it means transforming rural area to urban area. Those meanings have two implications for the population as well. The people who migrate from rural to the urban area tend to make the change voluntarily. They want to change their life better than when they lived in rural. On the other hand, the villagers forced by the situation being too urban tend to be apathetic and they are very difficult to adapt and to change so that they are finally forced to change. This paper aims to explain how urbanization happened in Indonesia and its implication on urban poverty. This study depends on investigating literature and media review. We argue that voluntarily urbanization may lead to the new formation of the urban periphery. This will bring economic and social consequences such as land acquisition, job opportunity and urban poverty. Further, the study indicated that under voluntary urbanization, social and economic pressure were more likely to attach to the indigenous community compared to forced urbanization. The study showed that programs on poverty alleviation need to consider the nature of urbanization. Finally, this paper suggests conducting an empirical study related to urban poverty caused by two types of urbanization.

Abstract

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is a type of plastic waste commonly found in the sea especially disposable soft drink bottles. PET plastic waste can decompose into harmful microplastics if swallowed by marine life. This study aims to determine the microplastic content of PET type in seawater in the city of Padang by glycolysis method using ethylene glycol (EG) solvent with a sodium carbonate as catalyst (Na2CO3) for depolymerization of PET to be a monomer of bis (2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate) (BHET). Glycolysis is carried out for 1 hour at 1960C. In this study, the variation of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) catalyst mass used are 0.02 gram, 0.04 gram, 0.06 gram, 0.08 gram, and 0.1 gram) and variation of ratio PET bottles: ethylene glycol  (gram: mL) are 10 : 20, 10:30, 10:40 and 10:50. The result obtained is 72.22% BHET product under optimum condition with amount of EG of 30 mL and Na2CO3 catalyst mass of 0.06 grams. The BHET was identified using FTIR to confirm the OH-, C-O, and C = O groups. Seawater samples are taken from three locations namely Padang beach, Tabing beach and Gajah Padang beac. The result shows absence of PET type microplastic in these samples.

Abstract

Heavy metal is the most dangerous was for the ecosystem because is not biodegradable, toxic, and carcinogenic even in a low concentration (ppm). It usually experienced some conditions such as not dissolved, precipitated, fused, absorbed, anorganic, reducer, oxidize, and free metal. One of the heavy metals that can cause negative effects for human and other living creature is Kromium Ion. The waste of the usage of Krom can damage the environment.  Krom is a heavy metal that has dangerous affects that we have to be aware of. Krom (VI) on water was found 2 form od specieses, as an anion (Cr2O7)2- (In Acid solution) and anion (CrO4)2- (In Alkaline solution). One of the ways how to overcome Krom in a waste is by absorb it with an adsorbent, modified Silica DMA. It characterized with an electron microscope scanning, infrared spectrum, K2CrO4 adsorption from liquid solution which investigated in some pH level, contact time, K2CrO4 first concentration. The result of the experiment shows that modifying silica with DMA increases the adsorption capacity for Kromat. Langmuir Isotherm Adsorption resulting regression coefficient on Silica R2=0,8488, and for the modified Silica R2=0,9054. Kromat maximum adsorption capacity on 1,255 mg/g Silica and 2,26 mg/g modified Silica with first concentration of K2CrO4 100 mg/L can be reach on pH 2 with 90 minutes mixing process.

Abstract

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is one of the most widely used plastics, especially in packaging. The many uses of PET along with the increasing amount of PET waste that has negative impact on the environment because PET is a plastic that can only be used for one time use and cannot be decomposed naturally. Therefore, it is necessary to recycle PET by depolymerizing by glycolysis into bis (2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate) BHET. In this research, glycolysis was using EG variations of 20, 30, 40, and 50 mL and temperature variations of 166, 176, 186, and 196 oC. The results obtained 83.425% BHET yield under optimum conditions of EG as much as 30 mL and temperature of 196 oC. The results was characterized by Fourier Transform Infra Red type perkin elmer universal ATL Sampling Accessors 735 B at wave numbers 600 - 4000 cm-1 to determine the functional groups that make up the BHET.

Abstract

Abstract — Bacterial cellulose can be applied in various fields such as biomedical fields, separation membranes, artificial blood vessels, and substrates for tissue engineering cartilage. Bacterial cellulose still has low mechanical properties, so a bacterial cellulose composite with hibiscus leaf extract (KSB-EDKS) is formed to obtain new, better materials. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding starch as a crosslinker, on the mechanical, physical, and structural properties of KSB-EDKS. Bacterial cellulose is produced from a mixture of coconut water, sugar and urea. Then fermented with acetobacter xylinum for 14 days. Bacterial cellulose formed in composites with hibiscus leaves is called bacterial cellulose extract of hibiscus leaves (KSB-EDKS). KSB-EDKS will be characterized by testing tensile strength, moisture content, structural analysis using FTIR and determining the degree of crystallinity using XRD. The addition of a crosslinker can reduce the percentage of KSB-EDKS water content. The best tensile strength test results were KSB-EDKS added with 3% tapioca flour solution with a value of 38.3 MPa, the FTIR spectrum showed that the functional groups in cellulose had just shifted in the range of the same wave number values and for the degree of crystallinity the addition of starch as crosslinker can reduce the degree of crystallinity in KSB-EDKS.  Keywords — Bacterial cellulose, Composite, Crosslinker, Hibiscus leaves
