Abstract

This study investigates the impact of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approaches on enhancing critical thinking, creativity, and student engagement in science education among elementary school students in Palembang, Indonesia. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group was employed, involving 120 fifth-grade students from two public elementary schools. The experimental group participated in a 6-week STEM-based science learning program, which included hands-on activities, project-based learning, and collaborative problem-solving tasks, while the control group followed the conventional science curriculum. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, creativity assessments using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT), observation sheets, and student project evaluations. The results revealed significant improvements in critical thinking (M=85.6, SD=4.2) and creativity (M=82.4, SD=3.8) among students in the experimental group compared to the control group (critical thinking: M=72.3, SD=5.1; creativity: M=68.7, SD=4.5), with p-values of 0.001 and 0.002, respectively. Additionally, observational data indicated higher levels of student engagement, collaboration, and enthusiasm in the experimental group. These findings underscore the effectiveness of STEM-based learning in fostering higher-order thinking skills and innovation, while also highlighting the importance of contextualizing STEM education to local environments. However, challenges such as limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and rigid curricula were identified as barriers to implementation. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers and educators to invest in STEM infrastructure, provide professional development for teachers, and reform curricula to support the integration of STEM approaches in Indonesian elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a Canva-based educational game entitled “How Breathing Helps Me in Daily Activities” as an innovative learning medium for Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial (IPAS) in elementary schools. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach consisting of four stages: analysis, design, development, and limited trials. The product was developed using the Canva platform and incorporates interactive game elements to support students’ engagement with the topic of the human respiratory system. Validation was conducted by material, media, and language experts, while practicality was examined through individual and small-group trials involving students. Learning improvement was analyzed using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The validation results indicated that the developed educational game achieved a very valid category in terms of content accuracy, media design, and language clarity. Practicality testing yielded a score above 90%, indicating that the media is easy to use, engaging, and appropriate for the cognitive characteristics of elementary school students. The analysis of learning outcomes showed an increase in students’ average scores from 50,40 in the pretest to 87,13 in the posttest, with an N-gain value of 0.74 categorized as high. These findings suggest that the developed game supports students’ understanding of the human respiratory system and its relationship to daily activities. Overall, this study contributes empirical evidence that a Canva-based educational game on the theme “How Breathing Helps Me in Daily Activities” is valid, practical, and demonstrates promising learning outcomes for IPAS instruction at the elementary level. Further studies using experimental designs with control groups are recommended to strengthen evidence of its effectiveness and generalizability.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini dilaksanakan untuk memperkuat literasi sekaligus menanamkan nilai karakter anti-bullying pada anak usia sekolah di Kecamatan Sematang Borang, Kota Palembang. Kegiatan ini didorong oleh tingginya kasus pelanggaran hak anak dan fenomena bullying di lingkungan pendidikan serta minimnya sarana edukatif dan pembiasaan nilai karakter di TBM Karya Mulya. Program bertujuan menciptakan ruang literasi yang aman, inklusif, dan mendukung pembentukan karakter positif melalui penguatan kapasitas relawan, penyediaan media edukasi, serta pelaksanaan literasi tematik. Kegiatan dilakukan secara luring yang diikuti oleh 40 peserta, terdiri dari 30 anak dan 10 relawan TBM, menggunakan metode sosialisasi, pelatihan relawan, pelaksanaan literasi tematik, pendampingan, serta evaluasi melalui pretest dan posttest. Produk utama berupa buku cerita dan video edukasi anti-bullying sebagai media pembelajaran berkelanjutan. Berdasarkan hasil pretest dan posttest, terjadi peningkatan pengetahuan yang sangat signifikan baik pada anak maupun relawan, ditunjukkan oleh nilai N-gain yang berada pada kategori sangat tinggi yaitu rata-rata skor pretest relawan adalah 56,9 dan meningkat menjadi 98 pada posttest sehingga menghasilkan N-gain sebesar 0,9527. Program ini berkontribusi signifikan terhadap revitalisasi TBM sebagai ruang edukatif dan pusat pencegahan bullying, serta memastikan keberlanjutan kegiatan melalui rencana tindak lanjut yang dapat dilaksanakan secara mandiri.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the problem of low learning outcomes of fifth grade students of SD Negeri 112 Palembang in science learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the improvement in student learning outcomes by implementing the Problem Based Learning model based on TPACK. This research was conducted in semester 1 of the 2024/2025 academic year with 25 fifth grade students as research subjects. The research was conducted in 2 cycles, with 4 meetings using qualitative and quantitative descriptive analysis in its data analysis. Observation, documentation and tests are the techniques used in collecting research data. The success criteria set for learning outcomes refer to the Minimum Completeness Criteria, which is 70. The pre-cycle obtained a percentage of learning outcome completion of only 24%. The 1st meeting in cycle I increased to 52% and increased at the 2nd meeting of cycle I to 72%. The 1st meeting of cycle II increased again with the percentage of completion reaching 84% then at the 2nd meeting of cycle II the completion became 100%. The results are in the form of conclusions that show that the TPACK-based PBL model can improve student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Literasi digital tidak hanya tentang kemampuan teknis, tetapi juga tentang bagaimana memanfaatkan teknologi untuk menciptakan pengalaman belajar yang inovatif dan menarik. Mengingat tantangan umum yang dihadapi guru sekolah dasar di Indonesia, khususnya di daerah pedesaan, program pengabdian masyarakat yang menargetkan guru-guru di Desa Sakatiga sangat relevan dan mendesak. Hal ini dapat disimpulkan dari informasi yang didapat dari pengawas sekolah untuk daerah Desa Sakatiga, dalam hal literasi digital, literasi numerasi atau pembelajaran berbasis teknologi di sekolah dasar masih sangat minim dan perlu perhatian khusus. Metode: Pengabdian Masyarakat ini dilaksanakan dalam bentuk penguatan dan pendampingan keilmuan menuju SDM Unggul bagi guru-guru SD Desa Sakatiga. Hasil: Penguatan dan pendampingan pengembangan pembelajaran berbasis literasi digital menuju SDM Unggul 2045 bagi guru Sekolah Dasar di Desa Sakatiga telah memberikan peningkatan pemahaman kepada peserta pelatihan atau guru, hal tersebut ditujukkan dengan terjadinya peningkatan skor dari hasil dari tes saat pretest dan post-test yang telah diberikan. Kesimpulan: Sosialisasi melalui forum resmi tatap muka yang melibatkan kepala dinas atau kepala sekolah atau perwakilan guru SD. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah pelatihan dan pendampingan dilakukan dengan dengan teknik: ceramah, diskusi dan tanya jawab, penugasan, dan simulasi. Guru didampingi saat mulai menyusun pembelajaran berbasis literasi digitaldan praktik langsung dengan bimbingan dari narasumber atau fasilitator. Penguatan dan pendampingan telah memberikan peningkatan pemahaman kepada peserta pelatihan atau guru.
