Abstract

This research was conducted from January to March 2015 by taking samples of seawater and sediment from the west coast of Karimun Besar Island of Riau Islands Province and analyzed their heavy metals concentrations. Analysis of samples was carried out in Marine Chemistry Laboratory, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, University of Riau by using Atomic Absortion Spectrophotometer. The results showed that the highest concentrations of Cd (0.109 mg/L) and Zn (0.227 mg/L) in seawater were found in the area of the boat and harbour activities, whilst the highest concentration in the sediment samples were found for Cd in Pelawan Coast (3.664 μg/g) and Zn (6.552 μg/g) in the ferry port area. The highest organic matter in the sediment was found in the ferry port (3.82%) and the lowest was in the Pelawan Coast (0.65%). Zn concentrations in sediment were still below the range of the ERL but Cd concentration has already exeeded the ERL but still below the ERM value. Based on Potential Ecological Risk Index, Cd may cause possible negative impact on the aquatic ecology of the West Coast of Karimun Besar Island.Key Words: Heavy Metals, Water, Sediment, Karimun

Abstract

The current marine environment has begun to be polluted and will directly affect the biota around it. The study of health conditions and spatial variations in the characteristics of the population of Rhizophora apiculata was carried out in the mangrove ecosystem around the oil and non-industrial areas of Riau Province. This study aims at a baseline for evaluating mangrove management in Riau Province. Sampling is carried out using line transects drawn from the reference point (outermost mangrove stands) in a direction perpendicular to the coastline to the mainland and sample plots made with a size of 10 X 10 m2. Samples of leaves, fruits, and flowers are taken randomly based on the sample plots made. Then preserved with 70% alcohol and labeled. The preserved samples were taken to the laboratory to measure morphometrics and calculate the number of stomats. The results showed that the population of R. apiculata at all stations was in an unhealthy condition. In addition, individual competition and adaptability possessed by the population of R. apiculata are very low, ranging from 09.53 - 17.27% and illustrating more group growth and very high competition among individuals. Furthermore, the discriminant analysis shows that the morphometric variables that most characterize the population of R. apiculata in the oil industry with non-industrial areas are the length of the stem. Based on the results of PCA analysis, the variables that most determine the poor health of the population of R. apiculata are the parameters of Pb heavy metals, pH, temperature and DO waters.

Abstract

Abstract

The devotion to the community of Pulau Cawan in Indragiri Hilir Regency carried out in the form of counseling and training which generally aimed at making the community, (especially the cadres of Family Welfare Empowerment or PKK), acquire skills in processing fishbased food and creating new independent businesses. The use and development of Pulau Cawan as an ecotourism area needs to be followed by activities that can improve the welfare of the surrounding community. With the opening of new jobs, it is ultimately expected to improve family welfare. Through this extension and training activities, it is hoped that when fish catch and production abundant or fish prices are falling, it can be saved by processing them into various processed products made from fish, especially snacks and cookies which are of high economic value and nutritious. The results of the activities received good reception and appreciation from the local community, the PKK cadres and Pulau Cawan Headmaster. All the participants confidently will empower their groups to create and start to open businesses in making these fish-based food products. The Head of Department of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries even promised to provide wider assistance for the development of the product, including its marketing.
