Abstract

The most consumed and cultivated coffee in Indonesia is robusta and arabica coffee. Robusta and arabica coffee have different characteristics such as morphology, contents, and taste. Coffee consumption could cause alteration in taste sensitivity, especially sweet taste. Those could affect daily sugar consumption. The present study aimed to determine the differences of short-term consumption of semendo robusta and arabica coffee towards sweet taste sensitivity. This study used experimental study with a cross-over design approach that involved 21 students from the Faculty of Medicine Sriwijaya University. Semendo robusta and arabica coffee are used in this study. Sweet taste sensitivity was tested using the whole mouth test method by rinsed with sucrose solution at a concentration of 0,16, 0,32, 0,64, and 1,28 mol/l, which was given from the lowest concentration. Sweet taste sensitivity scores were rated at baseline and after the consumption of semendo robusta and arabica coffee which took place on different days. The lowest sucrose concentration that was correctly interpreted by the subject was noted as a taste sensitivity score. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The chi-square test showed that the decrease in sweet taste sensitivity was more frequently happening after semendo arabica coffee consumption than semendo robusta coffee consumption (p<0,05). Short-term consumption of semendo arabica coffee has significantly increased the risk of sweet taste sensitivity reduction 4 times greater than semendo robusta coffee. There were differences in sweet taste sensitivity between short-term consumption of semendo robusta and arabica coffee.

Abstract

Background: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a chronic occlusive arterial disease of the extremities caused by atherosclerosis.1 It is estimated that 20-30% of the population worldwide suffered PAD.2 PAD is associated with a 1-year mortality and limb loss rate of 20%.7 Critical limb ischemia (CLI) is a late stage clinical presentation of PAD. Imaging of the entire artery is possible using CT angiography. However, CT angiography has its drawbacks because the contrast used can be nephrotoxic, the risk of allergies, expensive, and not all health services have it. Ultrasonographic’s (USG) sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were 96.55%, 61.53%, and 78.84% for detecting lower limb distal artery lesions.11 Ultrasonographic does not require the use of contrast, radiation, low cost and almost all health services have them.12 However, the Ultrasonographic examination has its limitations depending on the operator's capabilities. It is therefore necessary to conduct research that have never been previously studied in South Sumatra. Methods: This study is a diagnostic test study that examines the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound in detecting LEAD artery lesions. The samples were 29 patients. Results: At the femoropopliteal level, the results obtained were 91% sensitivity and 86% specificity. At the infrapopliteal level, the results obtained were 95% sensitivity and 87% specificity. Conclusion: Ultrasonographic has high sensitivity and specificity in detecting LEAD’s lesions

Abstract

Hemostasis is an emergency medical treatment to reduce pain and patient mortality, therefore research is being developed to find effective hemostasis. The utilization of natural materials for hemostasis and wound healing is rapidly expanding, including chitosan found in shell extracts. Chitosan is obtained from chitin found in the soft shells of marine animals such as squid, shrimp, and crabs, or from hard shells such as clams, crabs, and lobsters. Chitosan offers advantages such as good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, and has been widely used in biomedical, chemical, food, and cosmetic industries. This literature review aims to investigate the potential of shell extracts, particularly the characteristics of chitosan, in wound healing across hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling stages. The study results indicate that extracts from shells containing chitosan exhibit varying characteristics in terms of molecular weight and degree of deacetylation. Chitosan with higher molecular weight and degree of deacetylation tends to yield better outcomes in hemostasis and wound healing. The material is effective in reducing antithrombin, enhancing blood clotting processes, and aiding clot formation. Increased molecular weight contributes to stimulating various cytokines, such as TNF-α, TGF-ß1, and FGF2, which play a key role in the wound healing process. Additionally, higher degree of deacetylation chitosan is effective in stimulating fibroblast proliferation. Chitosan also influences VEGF in inducing angiogenesis and enhancing neovascularization in bone healing. Chitosan from shell extracts with certain molecular weight characteristics and degree of deacetylation has the potential to be the material of choice for accelerating hemostasis and wound healing.

Abstract

The present study focuses on the assessment of Hg distribution in both soil and water samples from the small-scale gold mining region of Karang Jaya Sub-district, Musi Rawas Utara Regency, South Sumatra Province. For over 30 years, this region has witnessed persistent utilization of mercury as an amalgam for gold extraction. The investigation encompasses an analysis of total mercury levels in soil samples obtained from Sukamenang, Muara Batang Empu, and Terusan Villages. As a comparative reference point devoid of gold mining activities, the neighboring Muara Lakitan Village was selected. The obtained results indicate a moderate to strong contamination level across the 30 sampled locations based on the Geoaccumulation Index (Igeo), with an average Igeo value of 2.6. Furthermore, Pollution Load Index (PLI) and Contamination Factor (CF) values demonstrate high contamination. Conversely, analysis of river water samples from 30 stations along the Rupit River reveals that most of the samples comply with quality standards (<0.0005 mg/L), with an average value at 0.000322 mg/L; only four stations exhibit total Hg concentrations surpassing regulatory thresholds. All soil and river water samples from the control area (10 stations) exhibited no signs of pollution. Appropriate investments in technology, finance, and technical skills are needed to reduce mercury pollution due to small-scale gold mining activities.

Abstract

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic heavy metal with the potential to contaminate the environment, particularly in landfill sites using open dumping systems, such as the Sukawinatan Landfill in Palembang. This study aims to measure Cd levels in scavengers’ hair as an indicator of heavy metal exposure. A cross-sectional study design was conducted in January 2024, with hair samples collected from five respondents using purposive sampling techniques. Cd levels were measured using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method. The results showed that Cd levels in the scavengers' hair ranged from 0.31 to 0.99 ppm, exceeding the normal limit set which is <0.10 ppm. The duration of work as a scavenger was identified as the dominant factor influencing Cd levels, although anomalies were observed in younger scavengers with high exposure intensity. These findings suggest that the working environment at the landfill significantly contributes to the accumulation of Cd in the body. This study provides preliminary insights into the health risks faced by scavengers at the Sukawinatan Landfill, which can serve as a basis for developing policies and mitigation measures to improve scavengers' occupational health and safety.

Abstract

Background: Coronary slow flow phenomenon (CSFP) is characterized by delayed distal coronary vessel opacification without significant epicardial coronary stenosis. The underlying mechanisms of CSFP remain unclear, but subclinical atherosclerosis is a likely contributor. This study investigated the relationship between the Triglycerides-Glucose Index (TyG), Electrocardiogram Risk Score (ERS), and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in CSFP patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 31 patients diagnosed with CSFP at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital Palembang. CSFP was determined based on coronary blood flow slowdown on angiography. Data collection included anamnesis, physical examination, laboratory tests, echocardiography, and CIMT measurement. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 27. Results: The majority of CSFP patients were male (51.6%) with a mean age of 50.87 ± 13.94 years. Dyslipidemia was the most prevalent risk factor (77.4%), followed by hypertension (35.5%), smoking (22.6%), and diabetes mellitus (6.5%). Statistical analysis revealed significant positive correlations between TyG index and CIMT (r = 0.445, p = 0.012), and between ERS and CIMT (r = 0.476, p = 0.007). Conclusion: TyG and ERS indices are positively correlated with CIMT in CSFP patients. These indices may be useful tools for cardiovascular risk evaluation and early identification of high-risk patients for subclinical atherosclerosis and potential CSFP.
