Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Local chicken production has significant economic potential; however, its development is constrained by low productivity and inadequate feed quality. Native chicken farming plays an important role in supporting the livelihoods of small-scale farmers, yet productivity remains limited due to dependence on conventional feed ingredients such as rice bran, whose availability and quality are often inconsistent. The utilization of agricultural by-products as alternative feed ingredients represents an innovative approach to improving efficiency and sustainability in native chicken production systems. Corncob is an abundant agricultural residue, but its utilization is limited by high crude fiber content and low nutrient digestibility. Fermentation using Effective Microorganisms (EM4) has the potential to enhance the nutritional quality of corncobs, making them more suitable for use as a feed ingredient. This study aimed to evaluate the use of EM4-fermented corncob meal as a substitute for rice bran in native chicken diets and to assess its effects on feed intake, slaughter weight, carcass weight, and carcass percentage. The findings of this study are expected to contribute scientific insights into the development of sustainable, agricultural waste-based alternative feeds that are practical and applicable for small-scale native chicken farming systems. METHODS The study was conducted at the Livestock Production and Forage Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Science, University of Jambi, for a period of eight weeks using 200 day-old native chickens. The experiment employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five dietary treatments and four replications. The treatments consisted of different inclusion levels of fermented corncob meal (FCM) in the diet, namely P0 = 0%, P1 = 4%, P2 = 8%, P3 = 12%, and P4 = 16%. The observed parameters included feed intake, slaughter weight, absolute carcass weight, and relative carcass weight. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and when a significant effect was detected (P < 0.05), Duncan’s Multiple Range Test was applied for mean comparison. FINDINGS The results of this study indicate that corncob meal fermented using EM4 can be utilized as a substitute for rice bran in native chicken diets. The inclusion of this feed ingredient allows normal feed intake to be maintained and is able to sustain slaughter weight and carcass weight of native chickens. CONCLUSION It can be concluded that fermented corncob meal can be included at levels up to 16% in native chicken diets without adversely affecting production performance.

Abstract

Nelayan di Desa Kampung Laut, Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Timur, Provinsi Jambi menghadapi masalah pendapatan yang tidak stabil akibat melimpahnya hasil tangkapan sampingan (bycatch) yang bernilai jual rendah. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan nilai ekonomi bycatch, memberikan keterampilan pengolahan kepada masyarakat pesisir, dan memperkuat ketahanan pangan lokal melalui inovasi produk. Metode yang digunakan adalah Program Kemitraan Masyarakat (PKM) dengan sasaran kelompok istri nelayan. Pelaksanaan kegiatan meliputi sosialisasi mengenai potensi bycatch, pelatihan, dan demonstrasi langsung pembuatan mie ikan. Efektivitas program diukur menggunakan pre-test dan post-test untuk menilai peningkatan pengetahuan peserta. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan antusiasme yang sangat tinggi, dengan tingkat kehadiran peserta 100% (23 orang). Terjadi peningkatan pemahaman yang signifikan, ditandai dengan naiknya nilai rata-rata dari 5.0 pada pre-test menjadi 8.0 pada post-test. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini berhasil membuktikan bahwa pelatihan pengolahan bycatch menjadi mie ikan merupakan solusi yang efektif dan aplikatif untuk meningkatkan nilai tambah sumber daya perikanan yang sebelumnya terabaikan, melemberdayakan perempuan, meningkatkan kesejahteraan nelayan, dan mendukung kemandirian pangan di wilayah pesisir.

Abstract

Feed is the largest component of operational costs in cultivation activities, reaching 60-70% of total production costs. However, the current price of feed is still very high due to feed raw materials still being imported. Therefore, efforts are needed to reduce import values by substituting soybean meal with other alternative raw materials. Alternative raw materials can be obtained, one of which is from the utilization of agricultural and plantation waste. This study aims to identify and analyze the nutritional content of agricultural and plantation waste in Jambi Province as a source of alternative fish feed raw materials. This study will be conducted over 6 months in several locations that produce agricultural and plantation waste in Jambi Province. The determination of research areas is done purposively considering that the research locations are sources of agricultural and plantation waste in Jambi Province. Types of agricultural and plantation waste that will be identified covering corn, pineapple, oil palm, rubber, coconut, areca nut, and sugarcane waste. Data collected include the total production of agricultural and plantation products over the past year, estimates of waste from production, identification of potential agricultural and plantation waste based on availability, and analysis of nutrient content (proximate). The research results show the nutrient values of each agricultural and plantation waste covering (protein, fat, fiber, moisture content, ash, and dry matter). Rubber seed waste shows the highest protein and fat values, namely 28.9% and 24.13%. The highest fiber content is found in areca nut husk at 46.45%. The highest moisture and ash content are found in pineapple peel at 77.52% and 4.6%. Meanwhile, the highest dry matter value is found in oil palm at 90.5%.

Abstract

Sungai Kumpeh sebagai anak Sungai Batanghari merupakan sumber daya perikanan penting yang dimanfaatkan nelayan dengan bubu kawat karena selektif, ramah lingkungan, dan efektif di perairan rawa; penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi keanekaragaman ikan di Perairan Desa Tarikan dan dilaksanakan pada 20–24 Juli 2023 melalui survei dan observasi terhadap 50 unit bubu, dengan analisis indeks keanekaragaman, keseragaman, dominasi, serta pengukuran suhu, pH, dan kedalaman; hasil menunjukkan 11 spesies dengan 710 individu, didominasi ikan Bentulu (162 ekor) dan Tawes (113 ekor), nilai H’ 2,690 (sedang), E 1,1 (stabil), dan C 0,13659 (rendah), serta kondisi perairan optimal (29,8°C; pH 7,58; kedalaman 6 m); sehingga bubu kawat efektif menangkap beragam ikan tanpa dominasi spesies tertentu dan mendukung keberlanjutan perikanan berbasis kearifan lokal.

Abstract

Kualitas lingkungan hidup kepiting bakau (Scylla spp.) merupakan aspek penting yang perlu dikaji melalui pendekatan data parameter oseanografi guna mendukung keberlanjutan populasi dan pemanfaatannya secara lestari. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kualitas habitat kepiting bakau di Desa Sungai Sayang, Kecamatan Sadu, Kabupaten Tanjung Jabung Timur, yang dilaksanakan pada 15–30 Juli 2024. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan menggunakan metode purposive sampling dengan 3 stasiun dan 3 transek pada setiap stasiun. Penilaian kualitas habitat menggunakan pendekatan Indeks Kualitas Habitat (IKH) berbasis pembobotan dengan parameter suhu, salinitas, pH, genangan air pasang surut, jenis vegetasi, dan kerapatan vegetasi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan ekosistem mangrove di lokasi penelitian tergolong kategori baik, dengan nilai IKH 57 pada Stasiun 1 dan nilai 51 pada Stasiun 2 dan 3. Analisis korelasi antara kualitas habitat dengan lebar karapas menunjukkan korelasi positif lemah (r = 0,38), sedangkan korelasi antara kualitas habitat dengan bobot tubuh menunjukkan korelasi positif sedang (r = 0,52). Hasil penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa kondisi habitat di perairan Desa Sungai Sayang berada dalam kondisi baik dan mampu mendukung kelangsungan hidup kepiting bakau.
