Abstract

Medicinal plants containing polyphenols (flavonoid dan tannin),  quercetin and capsaicin have strong antioxidant properties. These compounds can help inhibit oxidative stress that plays a role in various diseases, including diabetes mellitus. Capsicum annuum L is rich in phytochemicals and active compounds such as flavonoids (Quercetin, Luteolin, Kaempferol), tannins, saponins, terpenoids, carotenoids, and vitamin C. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of red curly chili (Capsicum annuum L.) ethanol extract as an antioxidant and antidiabetic agent in mice. The mice will be randomly divided into the following groups (6 mice per group): Diabetic control group (induced diabetes with streptozotocin, no treatment), and Capsicum annuum L group (Diabetic group treated with Capsicum annuum L ethanol extract at dose 100 mg/kg BW, 200 mg/kg BW, 400 mg/kg BW for 21 days). On the 21st day, the mice were anesthetized, and blood samples were collected via intracardiac puncture for the analysis of blood glucose and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. Oral administration of Capsicum annuum L. At 400 mg/kg resulted in a significant reduction in blood glucose and MDA levels (p<0.05) compared to the diabetic group. The results approached those of the normal group, although the difference was not statistically significant. The study confirmed that Capsicum annuum L. extract effectively alleviates oxidative stress associated with type II diabetes in STZ-induced mice, as evidenced by its ability to lower blood glucose levels and reduce MDA levels.

Abstract

This research investigated the capability of the kuit lime peel ethanol extract as a repellent against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. This study used the post test only control group design approach and the experimental method recommended by the World Health Organization Pesticides Evaluation Scheme (WHOPES) with modification. This study used seven different experiment groups consisting of a negative control group using a mixture of Tween 20 and aquadest, a positive control group using commercial mosquito repellent (Autan®), and concentration groups using 5%, 15%, 30%, 45%, and 60% (m/v) of the kuit lime peel ethanol extract. Each experiment groups were applied on a volunteer’s arms that are then inserted in a testing cage containing 25 female adult Ae. aegypti mosquitoes. Every mosquito that landed on the arm testing area will be calculated during the examination time (every 2 min for 30 min) to determine the repellent protection power percentage. Based on the result of the study using Two-Way Analysis of Variance and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test, the kuit lime peel ethanol extract is confirmed to be the most effective as a repellent against Ae. aegypti mosquitoes at the 30% concentration and until the 29th minute post-application with a 100% protection power.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of red dragon (Hylocereus polyrhizus) fruit peel extract (RDFPE) on the parameters of Leydig cells number, seminiferous tubules diameter, and testicular weight of mice (Mus musculus) exposed to heat (40°C). Twenty adult male mice were divided randomly into five groups. The control group (C) mice only received a placebo. Meanwhile, the treatment groups mice were exposed to heat for 45 minutes daily for 36 days and oral administration of placebo, RDFPE of 250, 500, and 1000mg/kg BW for T0, T1, T2, and T3, respectively. The result showed that heat exposure on mice (T0 group) caused a lower of all of the parameters (p <0.05) than normal mice (control group, C). RDFPE administration at a dose of 250 mg/kg BW (T1 group) and 500 mg/kg BW (T2 group) resulted in a higher value of those parameters (p <0.05) compared to the T0 group. All those parameters of the T2 group (dose of 500 mg/kg BW) were not significantly different (p >0.05) than the control group (normal mice). However, the higher dose of RDFPE (1000 mg/kg BW, T3 group) resulted in the lower values of those parameters (p <0.05) than those of the T2 group. It could be concluded that 500mg/kg BW dose of RDFPE could return Leydig cells number, seminiferous tubules diameter, and testicular weight of mice (Mus musculus) exposed to heat.

Abstract

Cigarette smoke chemicals caused oxidative stress by increasing Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). ROS exposure could be neutralized by antioxidants, such as green tea (Camellia sinensis) leaf extract. This study aimed to determine the effect of green tea extract (GTE) on spermatozoa plasma membrane integrity, spermatozoa viability, and spermatozoa motility of mice (Mus musculus) exposed to cigarette smoke. Twenty-five mice were randomly divided into five groups. Group C- mice were given a placebo (1% Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, Na-CMC). Group C+, T1, T2, and T3 mice were exposed to cigarette smoke and given 0, 20, 40, and 60 mg/kg BW GTE respectively. Cigarette smoke exposure used a clove cigarette per day. GTE in 1% Na-CMC solution was administered at 0.5 mL orally using a gastric probe. The treatment was conducted daily for 36 days, and on day 37, all mice were euthanized for spermatozoa evaluation. The results showed that all parameters evaluated in the C+ group were lower (p <0.05) than in C- group. Administration of GTE in the T2 group increased (p <0.05) all parameters compared to mice in the C+ group. However, administration of GTE to mice in the T3 group caused a decrease (p <0.05) in all parameters than those of the T2 group and was not significantly different (p >0.05) compared to those of the C+ group. It could be concluded that the administration of GTE at 40 mg/kg BW has maintained the spermatozoa plasma membrane integrity, spermatozoa viability, and spermatozoa motility of mice exposed to cigarette smoke.
