Abstract

Scientific competence is an essential ability required of students to understand scientific phenomena, interpret science-based information, and apply it in decision-making in everyday life, particularly in the context of global issues such as climate change. However, various international studies, including the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), indicate that the level of scientific competence among Indonesian students remains relatively low. One contributing factor to this condition is the limited availability of contextual learning materials that are not yet integrated with sustainability issues. This study aims to develop a physics e-book based on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), designed to support the enhancement of scientific competence on the topic of global warming. The study employs a Research and Development (R&D) method, which includes stages of needs analysis, product design, development, and limited trials. The feasibility of the e-book was evaluated through validation by subject-matter experts, media experts, and educational practitioners, while students’ responses were collected using questionnaires. The improvement in scientific competence was analyzed by comparing pretest and posttest results using N-gain calculations. The results indicate that the developed e-book meets feasibility criteria and receives positive responses from students. The e-book presents global warming material in a more systematic, contextual, and real world relevant manner. Therefore, the ESD-based physics e-book has the potential to be used as an alternative learning resource to support the development of students’ scientific competence.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the Microteaching course program in the Physics Education Study Program using the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model and to analyze the role of digital technology in enhancing prospective teachers’ teaching readiness. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, analysis of the course syllabus (RPS), and video documentation of Microteaching practices. Participants consisted of 19 seventh-semester students, one course instructor, and the Head of the Study Program. The Context evaluation showed that all components of the course syllabus were available and that there was a 100% alignment among Program Learning Outcomes (CPL), Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK), and course content. Regarding Input, students demonstrated good academic prerequisites, as indicated by 90% of them obtaining an A in the Physics Lesson Planning course; however, only 21.1% owned relevant textbooks, and facilities such as a dedicated Microteaching room and documentation equipment still require improvement. The Process evaluation revealed that 100% of students used technology in their Microteaching practices, particularly through presentation media, virtual simulations, and instructional videos, and some of them utilized artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support lesson planning. The Product evaluation indicated that most students achieved high final grades in the Microteaching course and reported positive perceptions of its contribution to their teaching readiness. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening students’ digital literacy, providing adequate facilities specifically designed for Microteaching, and systematically training teaching skills that integrate digital technology in order to further optimize the quality of the Microteaching course.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the profile of students' creative thinking skills in Physics and analyze their perceptions of Physics learning. The method used is descriptive quantitative involving 59 high school students selected through random sampling techniques. The instruments used include creative thinking skills tests and student response questionnaires that are analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of the study indicate that in general students' creative thinking skills are in the moderate category with an analysis per aspect, where "originality" obtained the highest percentage, while "flexibility" showed the lowest value. There was no significant difference between the creative thinking skills of male and female students. From the results of the questionnaire, some students stated that Physics lessons were still considered difficult and the learning was less innovative. Although most students have experience in working on projects, the implementation of mini projects is still considered necessary to optimize the development of creative thinking skills. These findings can be the basis for further research in developing project-based learning models to improve students' creative thinking skills in Physics learning in high school

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) model with group role division in improving students' conceptual understanding. The research problem focuses on CPS learning that previously did not apply role division, resulting in uneven group activities. This study uses a mixed method with an embedded experimental design, where quantitative data is the main focus through concept comprehension tests, while qualitative data in the form of observations of student activities is used to reinforce the analysis results. Quantitative data analysis was performed using statistical techniques, both descriptive and inferential, to see trends, differences, or relationships between variables, while qualitative data was analyzed through reduction, categorization, and interpretation processes. The results showed that the experimental group experienced a higher increase in cognitive ability compared to the control group. The effect size value of 0.7 indicates that the effect of CPS based on group role division is moderate. Furthermore, observations show that the group roles in the experimental class were more active and responsible than those in the control group. These findings confirm that integrating CPS with effective group role sharing improves student learning outcomes and cognitive abilities, particularly in understanding complex physics topics.

Abstract

Critical thinking is a fundamental competency emphasized within the Merdeka Curriculum, vital for enabling students to analyze scientific phenomena and construct reasoned explanations. This study aimed to diagnose the critical thinking skills of seventh-grade junior high school students regarding temperature and heat material using a two-tier diagnostic test. Employing a descriptive survey method, the research involved 88 students from a public junior high school in Cianjur. An instrument comprising 18 two-tier test items was developed based on Facione’s critical thinking indicators: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. The results indicated varied competency levels across the indicators. Students demonstrated moderate performance in interpretation (53.0), analysis (51.5), and evaluation (54.5). In contrast, considerably lower scores were observed in inference (41.3), explanation (38.6), and particularly self-regulation (26.5), revealing significant challenges in drawing logical conclusions, providing coherent scientific justifications, and monitoring their own reasoning processes. These findings align with existing literature indicating that higher-order thinking skills develop gradually and require explicit instructional support. The study confirms the effectiveness of the two-tier test as a diagnostic tool for uncovering both conceptual understanding and cognitive reasoning patterns, providing an empirical profile to guide the design of differentiated, inquiry-based learning strategies in line with the formative assessment goals of the Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

Understanding learning theories is essential for prospective teachers, yet students often experience difficulties identifying theoretical perspectives within authentic instructional situations. This study aims to examine students’ ability to identify cognitive learning theories through a case-based game activity involving rotating case analysis. The study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants were sixteen undergraduate students in a physics education program who worked collaboratively in four groups. Students analysed four instructional cases representing different cognitive learning theories and provided written explanations for their answers. The results show that all groups correctly identified the theory represented in the misconception case. Most groups also successfully recognized the discovery learning situation. However, only half of the groups correctly identified the theories related to instructional organization and problem solving. These findings suggest that students are more familiar with learning situations involving conceptual conflict and discovery learning than with those related to instructional structure and hierarchical learning processes. The activity provided opportunities for students to interpret teaching situations and connect theoretical concepts with classroom practices.
