Abstract

Science process skills are skills that students must have in learning Physics because students are required to be able to apply scientific methods and knowledge and develop the knowledge skills they already have, so that science process skills are needed by students to face the real world which is dominated by technology and science. The purpose of this study is to ascertain how students' science process abilities in studying physics are affected by a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) project-based learning approach. The study's sample was selected through the use of purposeful sampling. The sample consisted of thirty-four X grade students from a public high school in Bandung City. Formative pretest-posttest testing was used in this study as part of a quantitative pre-experiment methodology. Twelve multiple-choice questions were utilized in a formative evaluation of the abilities of the science process to collect research data. The results revealed that the moderate group had an N-Gain score of 0.61. A high category for observing and classifying indicators and a medium category for forecasting, measuring, drawing conclusions, and presenting indicators are used to categorize the improvement in science process skills indicators. Thus, the STEM-based learning model can improve students' science process skills.

Abstract

Critical thinking is a vital intellectual skill that enables informed judgments through the analysis of information. Its development in educational settings is essential, particularly in science learning, where analytical reasoning and problem-solving are fundamental. This study aims to analyze Scopus-indexed journal articles (Q1–Q4) that investigate critical thinking in science education. A systematic literature review process was employed to examine 57 empirical papers, encompassing three primary stages: planning, conducting, and reporting. The analysis examined research areas, subject fields, participants, data collection tools, and research methods. The results indicated that most studies employed a quantitative approach, with high school students from medium-sized schools as the primary participants. Essay tests were the most commonly used instruments for measuring critical thinking. The primary research emphasis was on creating and assessing instructional materials, particularly within the realm of physics education. These findings reveal current trends and research gaps, particularly in underexplored topics such as cross-disciplinary integration and assessment strategies. This study contributes to science education by mapping the current research landscape of critical thinking and providing insights that inform future investigations, curriculum design, and instructional innovation.

Abstract

Ethnophysics is an innovation in physics learning that connects local culture, traditions, and community practices into learning by analyzing physics concepts that occur. One form of application is through the traditional game Gatrik, which contains the principles of motion, especially parabolic motion. This study aims to design and implement an ethnophysics-integrated physics learning design on parabolic motion material through the Gatrik game. This research uses qualitative method with participatory action research design on the implemented learning process. This research focuses on observing learning with a lesson study approach, which consists of three stages namely plan, do, and see which focus on strengthening and assisting high school physics teachers in developing ethnophysics-based teaching tools. At the plan stage, learning tools were prepared in the form of lesson plans and LKPD; at the do and see stages, open lessons were conducted to observe the implementation of learning. The data in this study were collected using a learning observation sheet, especially at the see stage of a series of lesson study activities. The results of the plan stage are in the form of lesson plans and LKPD that have been adapted to ethnophysics integrated physics learning. Furthermore, the results of observations at the do and see stages show that physics learning that integrates Gatrik games as a representation of ethnophysics can increase student learning activities. Learning combined with traditional games can significantly increase students' enthusiasm for physics material. In general, the integration of ethnophysics in learning can contribute to the preservation of local wisdom and increase students' interest and motivation to learn in Physics.

Abstract

The importance of science literacy skills prompted this study to analyze the profile of science literacy competence of junior high school students in biodiversity in Indonesia. OECD defines science literacy as the ability to identify questions, acquire new knowledge, explain scientific phenomena, and draw conclusions based on facts. This research uses a quantitative approach involving 200 students from SMP Negeri 1 Pagaden Subang and SMPN 2 Pagaden Subang. The E-Test consisted of 25 questions distributed via WhatsApp Group by natural science subject teachers. Data were processed using Microsoft Excel and grouped based on the difficulty level of the questions (low, medium, high). The results show that junior high school students' science literacy skills are still in the low category. In explaining scientific phenomena competence, the percentage of correct answers for low and medium difficulty questions reached 66% and 67%, respectively, while for high difficulty questions it was only 55%. In evaluating and designing scientific investigations competence, questions with low difficulty levels had the highest percentage of correct answers (68%), followed by medium (56%) and high difficulty levels (43%). In interpreting scientific data and evidence competence, questions with low difficulty levels reached 78%, medium 69%, and high 58%. These findings are consistent with previous studies showing the low science literacy of students in various regions of Indonesia. Therefore, more intensive and sustainable efforts are needed to improve students' science literacy through more effective and interactive learning methods and teacher training. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for policymakers in formulating more appropriate education strategies to improve students' science literacy competence in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study maps changes in misconceptions about stellar evolution by emphasising three student-level categories: positive, stable, and negative change. Misconceptions in astronomy often persist in definitional concepts and causal relations. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with experimental and control classes was employed. Data were collected using a fifteen-item, four-tier diagnostic; an item was considered understood when both the answer and the written reason were correct. We analysed each student’s total understanding score to classify individual change and then computed class-level proportions. Results show the experimental class was dominated by positive change 62.9%, followed by stable 25.7% and negative 11.4%; the control class showed positive 48.6%, stable 24.3%, and negative 27.0%. These findings indicate that differentiated instruction is more effective in reducing misconceptions at the individual level.
