Abstract

Cassava leaf paste is an alternative substance in supporting the physiological performance of quail. Cassava leaf paste contains nutritional compositions such as water, ash, crude protein, crude fiber, fat, and carbohydrate. Cassava leaf paste has high crude protein and low crude fiber. The content of β-carotene and chlorophyll in cassava leaf paste has the ability as an antioxidant. Cassava leaf paste also contains phytochemicals such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins, sitosterol, and stigmasterol. The concentration of phytochemical has slightly higher flavonoid content, moderate tannins and saponins, and high sitosterol and stigmasterol. These phytochemicals act as antioxidants, antimicrobials, anti-inflammatory, improve the immunomodulatory system and reduce cholesterol. In addition, cassava leaf paste contains macro minerals such as P and Ca, as well as microminerals (Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn). These minerals act as an antioxidant increases nutrient absorption, enhances immune response, and take part in mineralization during eggshell formation. Cassava leaf paste also has low levels of cyanide. Based on the nutritional content, phytochemicals, macro and micro minerals, and cyanide acid, cassava leaf paste has the potential to increase the physiological performance of quail.

Abstract

The main problem in tropical poultry farming that often happens is a high mortality rate. Deaths occurrance mostly by heat stress, a condition which is caused by high temperature ( > 28 ° C). Prolonged heat stress was given to 24 quails grouped in four groups: A (39 ° C), B (41 ° C), C (43 ° C) and D (45 ° C). Provision of heat stress was done when the quails were 2 days old. Blood sampling was performed at the age of 6 weeks. Overall, there was an increase in the number of white blood cell, heterophile, eosinophil, monocyte, the ratio between heterophyll and lymphocyte and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in all treatment groups. While the number of lymphocytes decreased in all treatment groups. Basophils had a significant increase in group C, but there was a decrease in group B and D decreased from control. This indicates that maintenance above temperature > 25 ° C can cause oxidative stress due to heat stress in quail.

Abstract

Selanjutnya, tikus dilakukan anestesi dan GET diukur. Animal age and drug dose can significantly affect the performance and absorption of oral drugs. This study aimed to compare gastric emptying time (GET) and intestinal motility response in young (3-4 weeks old) and adult rats (6-8 weeks old). The study employed a factorial randomized design with 12 young and 12 adult rats, which were given 0-20 g/kg BW of orange juice as a model for acidic drugs. Afterward, the rats were anesthetized, and GET was measured. Intestinal motility was measured from the length of the Chinese ink trail in the intestine. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA (p<0.05). The results showed that GET in young rats was similar to that of adults (59.00 and 54.67 minutes). The highest dose of orange juice (20 g/kg BW) significantly prolonged GET. Rats older than three weeks showed relatively constant intestinal length. Regarding intestinal motility, both the dose of orange juice and age significantly increased the marker ratio and peristaltic speed. These findings suggest that higher doses of orange juice prolong GET and improve intestinal motility, while increasing age enhances motility without affecting GET. In conclusion, there were differences in digestive responses among rats of varying ages when exposed to acidic drugs.

Abstract

Quail is a type of poultry that is easy to raise and is the second largest egg producer after laying hens. The benefits of quail include a relatively high production cycle, minimal land requirements, and low feed consumption. Quail are more susceptible to stress compared to other poultry, particularly stress induced by elevated ambient temperatures. This stress can be overcome by administering antioxidants. Melastoma malabathricum L (commonly known as senduduk) leaf is a natural antioxidant that can alleviate stress. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of different doses of senduduk leaf powder on the physiological and performance of laying quails. This study used a Completely Randomized Design with four treatments and four replications. The doses of senduduk leaf powder administered were P0 (0%), P1 (1.5%), P2 (3%), and P3 (4.5%). A total of 160 female quails, aged 40 weeks, were maintained for four weeks. The variables observed comprised hematological values, stress indicators, and quail performance during the laying period. The study’s results on hematological values, stress indicators, and quail performance during the laying period showed an increase at a dose of 3% (P2). The optimal concentration was identified as the 3% dose of senduduk leaf powder in treatment P2.

Abstract

In various parts of the world, including Indonesia, the incidence of ischemic stroke remains high, and its impact poses a significant burden. This condition is influenced by numerous limitations in ischemic stroke therapy. Research on ischemic stroke is therefore crucial to develop, making the creation of appropriate animal models a vital necessity. One of the most commonly used methods by researchers to create animal models is the Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion (MCAO) method. However, in Indonesia, its application remains limited due to the lack of available facilities. Method modifications can be implemented to enable the development of animal models in Indonesia. This study employed modifications to the MCAO method on eight Sprague Dawley rats. The modification involved using an intravenous catheter to facilitate the insertion of the filament as an occluder in the middle cerebral artery of the rats. Based on clinical and pathological observations, it can be concluded that the modified MCAO method used in this study is suitable for creating ischemic stroke animal models. With this modification, the creation of ischemic stroke animal models can be carried out in a simpler and more cost-effective manner.

Abstract

Stroke is a neurological disorder caused by impaired blood flow to specific regions of the brain, often resulting in paralysis and functional deficits in the affected area. Among its subtypes, ischemic stroke is the most prevalent in the general population. This study aimed to establish a rat model of ischemic stroke induced by middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Eight male Sprague-Dawley rats aged 8–10 weeks were randomly assigned to two groups: control and treatment group. In the treatment group, the middle cerebral artery was occluded for 45 min. Neurological assessment using the Bederson scale revealed a neurological deficit score (NDS) of 1, characterized by contralateral flexion after left-brain injury. Hematological analysis demonstrated significantly higher white blood cell (WBC) counts (p < 0.05), whereas red blood cell (RBC) counts, hemoglobin concentration, and hematocrit values were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those in the control group. These findings indicate that the MCAO method with a 45-minute occlusion successfully induced a mild neurological deficit accompanied by distinct hematological alterations, thereby providing a reproducible animal model for ischemic stroke research.
