Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of oral administration of white guava fruit juice (Psidium guajava L.) on the spermatogenic cells of rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed orally to lead acetate. Twenty-five male rats (Rattus norvegicus) of the Wistar strain were randomly divided into five groups. Placebo group rats (P0) were given 0.5 mL distilled water twice every day orally at four-hour intervals. Groups T0, T1, T2, and T3 were given lead acetate 50 mg/kg bw orally, then respectively given distilled water, 100, 50 and 25% (v/v) white guava (Psidium guajava L.) fruit juice orally four hours later for 14 days. On day-15, the rats were sacrificed and their testicles were taken for histological preparations. Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the number of spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids cells of rats in T0 group was lower (p <0.05) than in P0 group. Higher spermatogonia, spermatocytes and spermatids cells (p <0.05) were found in the T1 group compared to the T0 group. However, the number of spermatogonia and spermatocytes in the T1 group was still lower than in the P0 group. The number of spermatids in the T3 group was almost the same (p >0.05) as in the P0 group. This study found that white guava pure juice without dilution was the best for maintaining the number of spermatids, but was unable to restore the number of spermatogonia and spermatocyte cells in rats exposed to lead acetate.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the spermatozoa motility and viability of turkey semen extended with egg yolk nanoparticles-PBS extender at various concentrations, stored at 3-5°C. Semen was collected from two turkeys and divided into four treatment groups. Group T0 consisted of fresh turkey semen extended with 20% (v/v) fresh egg yolk in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). Groups T1, T2, and T3 consisted of fresh turkey semen extended with 5, 10, and 20% (v/v) egg yolk nanoparticles in PBS, respectively. Extended semen was stored in a refrigerator (3-5°C), and progressive spermatozoa motility and viability were evaluated every two hours until spermatozoa motility decreased to 40%. The results showed that turkey semen in T3 extender containing 20% ​​egg yolk nanoparticles in PBS was able to maintain spermatozoa motility for up to eight hours, better than T0 and T2 extenders which supported spermatozoa motility for six hours. In contrast, T1 extenders only support spermatozoa motility for four hours. T3 extenders were also able to maintain spermatozoa viability for up to eight hours, while T0, T1 and T2 extenders could only support viability for 6 hours. The extender with 20% egg yolk nanoparticles in PBS was significantly better (p <0.05) in maintaining spermatozoa quality compared to those with 5 and 10% egg yolk nanoparticles, as well as the extender with 20% fresh egg yolk. In conclusion, 20% egg yolk nanoparticles in PBS semen extender was effective in maintaining the motility and viability of turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) spermatozoa stored at 3-5°C for up to eight hours.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the factors related to uterine prolapse in beef cow in the Besuki Animal Health Center working area in Situbondo regency. The sample consisted of 100 cows that calved in 2020-2022, whose data was obtained from the Department of Animal Husbandry of Situbondo regency, East Java, Indonesia. Determination of the months of the rainy and dry season was obtained from the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency, Juanda Class I Meteorological Station. Other data regarding breed, age, parity of cow and dystocia incidence in cow was obtained by conducting interviews with farmers followed by confirmation with inseminator records, and direct observation of the housing system. The collected data were cross-tabulated and analyzed using Chi-square analysis to determine possible factors causing uterine prolapse. The results showed that the incidence of uterine prolapse in beef cow in the working area was 35% (35/100). The factors of housing, age, parity, and incidence of dystocia were significantly related (p <0.05) to the incidence of uterine prolapse, while breed and season did not have a significant influence (p > 0.05). It could be concluded that the age and parity of the cow at the time of calving, the practice of housing cow, and the incidence of dystocia were related to the incidence of uterine prolapse in cows in the Besuki Animal Health Center operational area.

Abstract

This study was conducted at Setia Kawan dairy cattle farming cooperative in Nongkojajar, Pasuruan, East Java to evaluate the effects of different antibiotic treatments on pregnancy sustainability in Holstein Friesian (HF) dairy cows infected with foot and mouth disease (FMD). The objective was to identify which antibiotics have minimal impact on pregnancy outcomes in FMD infected cows. A total of 106 pregnant HF cows infected with FMD were included in this study. Samples were selected using a purposive sampling method with inclusion criteria of pregnant HF dairy cows that tested positive for FMD. Four types of antibiotics were assessed, including enrofloxacin, oxytetracycline, amoxicillin, and penicillin-streptomycin. The results showed that among cows treated with enrofloxacin, 88.46% maintained pregnancy while 11.54% experienced abortion. For oxytetracycline, 73.08% of cows did not abort, whereas 26.92% did. In the amoxicillin group, 61.54% maintained pregnancy and 38.46% aborted. For penicillin-streptomycin, only limited data were available, with 23.07% maintaining pregnancy and no recorded cases of abortion. In conclusion, while variations were observed among different antibiotic treatments, statistical analysis indicated no significant association between antibiotic type and abortion rate in HF cows infected with FMD. Further studies with larger sample sizes are recommended to confirm these findings.

Abstract

Reproduction is one of essential factor directly affecting profitability in a dairy production system. Some of the reproductive factors that influenced to the developing of dairy cattle of small holder's farmer are Conception Rate (CR) Service per Conception (S/C). The study was conducted to know the CR and S/C of Friesian Holstein in KUD Argopuro, Probolinggo. The data is taken primary and secondary data. Primary data retrieval is done by direct observation, which includes several variables, where the variables include : the identity of the breeder, cages, and feeding and drinking. As for the secondary data obtained by recording the card Artificial Insemination (AI) owned by Inseminator in KUD Argopuro. The data which by collected from this sample are CR and S/C. This research was a case study. The materials used cattle as the acceptors were 10% from 728 lactation cattle. Data from the results of this research on CR (30%) and S/C (2,49). The conclusion of this research for CR the result were lower than normal and S/C the result were higher than normal.

Abstract

Dystocia defined as difficulty of birth. Catlle that experienced dystocia characterized by extended processing time of birth, difficult, and impossible to do without help of human stem. This study aimed to determine the number of and causative factor of dystocia in beef cattle in Kecamatan Kunir Kabupaten Lumajang. Data acquisition used primary data and secondary data. Primary data was obtained from direct observations about management of maintenance, then interviewed the farmers in Kecamatan Kunir. Secondary data was data obtained from the recording belongs to animal health technical officer. The results showed that the prevalence of dystocia in Kecamatan Kunir Kabupaten Lumajang as many as 63 cases or 11,6 % of 543 birth. The result of the research is analyzed using chi square (χ2) method on SPSS 20.0 program and risk factors that increase the incident of dystocia were IB semen which greater than the catlle site, the position of the foetus and inertis uteri can resulting in weakness of the catlle at the age of older and more likely to give birth.

Abstract

The study was conducted to know Conception Rate and Service per Conception of  Bali cattle acceptors in west Sumbaw district. Data were collected fot the periode of January to September 2017 from inseminator in west Sumbawa district. The data were taken by primary and secondary data. Primary data retrieval is done by direct observation, which includes several variables, where the variable include the identitiy of the breeder, the cages, feeding, drinking and knowladge of breeders. The secondary data were obtained by recording of the officer insemination. All data was analyzed to find a percentage of Conception Rate and find number of Service per Conception (S/C) by analyzed descriptive of SPSS. Risults of this research showed that Conception Rate and Service per Conception's average of Bali Cattle is 60 % and 1,7. The conculusion of this research showed that Conception Rate is lower than normal value and Service per Conception of Bali cattle in West Sumbawa district is better. This research was expected to be a reference for the next artificial insemination programmed by the government.

Abstract

Etawa crossbred goat is one species of goat that is raised for milk production. One of the diseases that often occur in dairy livestock is mastitis, in which there is inflammation of the mammary gland. It is common in goat, that mastitis does not show clinical symptoms (subclinical). This research aims to determine the incidence of subclinical mastitis in Etawa crossbred goats in Bangelan village Wonosari district Malang regency. This research involved 25 respondent farms, which are Etawa crossbred dairy goat farms. In this research, subclinical mastitis cases were directly detected using California Mastitis Test (CMT). The results showed that out of 70 samples collected, 41 (58.6%) samples were positive. These CMT positive goats were from 88% of the respondent farms.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementing mineral mix and concentrate booster on the fertility of cows recovering from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). Eighteen post-FMD cows were assigned to three treatment groups. Cows in the T0 group received a standard feed consisting of elephant grass and a local concentrate. In the T1 group, cows were provided the standard feed supplemented with 40 g/day of mineral mix, while cows in the T2 group received the standard feed supplemented with 600 g/day of concentrate booster. The feeding treatments were applied for 42 days, and fresh drinking water was provided ad libitum. The results showed that the onset of estrus occurred significantly earlier (p <0.05) compared to the anestrus period experienced during FMD infection. Both supplemented groups exhibited higher (p <0.05) estrus rates, pregnancy rates, and calving rates than the T0 group. The interval between the last estrus and the initiation of additional feeding was considerably longer than the onset of estrus observed after treatment. The pH and ferning scores of cervical mucus in cows from the T0 group were lower than those in the T1 and T2 groups. However, no significant differences (p >0.05) were found in cervical mucus pH or ferning scores between the T1 and T2 groups, between pregnant and non-pregnant cows, or between offspring sex categories. In conclusion, supplementation with either a mineral mix or a concentrate booster improved fertility parameter, including estrus rate, pregnancy rate, and calving rate, in cows recovering from FMD.
