Abstract

Abstract

Faltacaria moluccana at its early plantation, is devastated by heat and water stress due to current global climate change. Production forests in Indonesia suggested to use biochar to enhance the durability of early growth F. moluccana in the field. Empty fruit bunches (EFB), a gigantic abundant waste material in Indonesia, pose its potential as biochar feedstock. This study aims to evaluate the effects of EFB biochar on the growth of F. moluccana for one year in a field setting. The experiment used two biochar application rates (25 and 50 tons/ha) and biochar produced at two pyrolysis temperatures (400°C and 600°C). Climatic factors (rainfall and average temperature) were monitored to assess how biochar interacted with field conditions to influence the growth of F. moluccana. EFB biochar increased height and diameter increment by up to 25% and 42%, respectively, compared to control after one year. While pyrolysis temperatures show no impact on growth, biochar application rates of 25 and 50 tons/ha significantly boost diameter increments by 36% and 42%, respectively, compared to controls, without affecting height. Biochar also improves monthly growth increments under water and heat stress. EFB biochar optimizes growth under current climate conditions in Indonesia and mitigates the negative effects of extreme temperature fluctuations. Abstract

Penentuan plot menggunakan intensitas sampling (IS) 0,1%, sehingga jumlah plot pengamatan sebanyak 64 plot.

Abstract

The world is experiencing a food crisis due to climate change, and mangroves as a blue ecosystem have a significant potential to mitigate this crisis. This research seeks to record the ethnobotanical practices of utilising mangroves, as a food source in East Lampung. We employed the snowball sampling method in Margasari village, Purwerejo village, and Karya Makmur village. In addition, we gathered data on mangrove species, parts of used, processing methods, products, and their properties, through interviews and observations. Also, we analysed the data using descriptive analysis to provide a comprehensive overview of the varieties of mangroves, their processing, and the resulting products. This research revealed that the communities employs five distinct varieties of mangroves as sustenance sources. Mangroves produce various food products from their four components: fruit, juvenile leaves, old leaves, and propagules. Notably, processed products, including pidada fruit (Sonneratia caseolaris), are anti-hypertensive, canker sores, and heartburn treatments. Jeruju leaves (Acanthus ilicifolius) are known to improve stamina, and seeds without the root of Rhizophora mucronata propagules act as anti-gastritis agents, improve blood circulation, and prevent anaemia. Although there are ten processed mangrove products, they are still considered traditional and are not as popular among the newer generation.

Abstract

AbstractAgarwood (Aquilaria malaccensis) is one of the non-timber forest products that has high economic value. However, this plant grows very slowly.  Therefore, seed technology input is needed, such as addition of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The objectives of this research were to study the effect of AMF inoculum i.e. Glomus sp., Gigaspora margarita and mixture of both species on agarwood growth and to determine the best AMF type for agarwood seedlings growth. The experimental research design used was a completely randomized design with three treatments, namely Glomus sp. (G), G. margarita (Gi) and a mixture of Glomus sp. and G. margarita (GGi) and without AMF inoculation (K) with each treatment repeated 8 times. The number of AMF spores used was ± 300 spores/seedling, and applied at the time of transplanting from germination tray to the polybag. Data were processed using analysis of variance and least significant difference test (LSD). The results showed there was AMF colonization in agarwood roots after 12 weeks of inoculation with the highest percentage at 20.50% on G. margarita treatment. Overall, AMF improved the growth of agarwood seedlings. The best seedlings growth was in the treatment of mixed AMF (GGi). Increased growth was found in plant height (14.68 cm), seedling diameter (2.16 mm), leaf area (119.30 cm2), root volume (1.15 mL), total dry weight (0.83 g), and shoot root ratio (4.99).[Keywords: agarwood, A. malaccensis,AMF, G. margarita,Glomussp.]AbstrakGaharu (Aquilariamalaccensis) adalah salah satu hasil hutan bukan kayu yang memiliki nilai ekonomis tinggi.

Abstract

Rehabilitation of post-mining limestone soils is often a challenge due to a lack of nutrients and poor soil humus. The research aims to study the effect of various ameliorants on soil chemical properties, growth, and P uptake of gaharu plant (Aquilaria malaccensis) in post-mining limestone soil for revegetation of critical land. The research was conducted in a Completely Randomized Design with three replications. The treatments were P0 (Control, without ameliorant); P1 (Humic Acid, HA, 4 kg ha-1 ); P2 (Phosphate Rocks, PR, 350 kg ha-1 ); P3 (Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi, AMF, 500 spores plant-1 ); P4 (HA+AMF); P5 (PR+AMF); and P6 (HA+PR+AMF). Data were analyzed using ANOVA at 95% confidence level and continued with the LSD test. The use of various types of ameliorants (HA, RP, and AMF) significantly increased root length, root volume, wet and dry weight of roots, shoot wet and dry weight, and P uptake of gaharu tree. The best ameliorant in increasing gaharu tree growth was AMF (P3) treatment, and AMF combined with HA (P4) treatment. Thus, for revegetation of critical land, especially post-mining limestone land, using gaharu tree requires HA and AMF inoculation.

Abstract

This study explores the effects of pyrolysis temperature of shorea wood biochar and its doses on the soil properties and biomass of Falcataria moluccana seedlings. The focus is optimizing pyrolysis temperatures (400°C and 600°C) and biochar doses (0%, 25%, and 50%) to enhance soil fertility and seedling biomass. Both pyrolysis temperature and biochar dose are critical factors that influence the soil properties, directly affecting its effectiveness as a soil amendment. The research was conducted as a controlled greenhouse experiment over 120 days; each treatment was replicated 15 times. We observed several soil chemical properties, including pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), organic carbon (C-organic), total nitrogen (N-total), and total phosphorus (P-total). The growth parameters assessed included above ground biomass (AGB), below ground biomass (BGB), total biomass (TB), and root to shoot ratio (R:S). Data analysis involved one-way and two-way ANOVA. Results indicated that soil properties, particularly cation exchange capacity (CEC) and organic carbon content, were improved, thereby enhancing soil fertility. However, ANOVA indicated no statistically significant differences across treatments. Biochar significantly enhanced above-ground and below-ground biomass (AGB and BGB). Nevertheless, both pyrolysis temperature and biochar dose independently influenced biomass accumulation in F. moluccana seedlings. The highest increases were observed in the treatment with the highest pyrolysis temperature (600ᵒC) and the highest dose (50%), which led to an 85% increase in AGB and a 60% increase in BGB compared to the control. Based on the study, Shorea wood biochar, particularly when used at 600°C and 50% dose, significantly improves soil fertility and seedling growth, providing a promising approach for developing F. moluccana plantations.
