Abstract

This qualitative research aims to describe the form and implementation of PAI in kindergarten schools and identify the impact of Islamic education on the social and emotional intelligence of early childhood. The research locations are PAUD/TK Al-Amin in Jember Regency, both of which are Islamic-based schools and favorite schools in Jember. The data collection methods used were interviews, observations, literature studies, and documentation studies with PAUD teacher representatives as informants. Meanwhile, data analysis followed the interactive model of qualitative data analysis, namely through the processes of Data Reduction, Data Displays, Conclusion Drawing/ Verification. The findings of this research indicate that the role of Islamic education is very important in efforts to develop children's social and emotional intelligence because it includes moral education and shapes children's moral character for the better, considering that children of this age are in their golden age. Islamic education must be instilled as early as possible in early childhood because it is very good for the growth and development of their personalities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to improve the assertiveness skills of early childhood children through the application of role-playing methods in the Al-Hidayah Playgroup (KB). Through role-playing activities designed with themes close to the children's experiences, it is hoped that children can be more confident in communicating and demonstrating assertive behavior appropriate to their developmental stages. The research method used in this study is Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was conducted in two cycles, where each cycle consists of four stages, namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Based on the results of the research in the two learning cycles, there was a significant increase in the development of children's assertiveness skills in KB Al-Hidayah. In the first cycle, although the role-playing activity with the theme "My Choice Today" had been implemented with careful planning, most children still had difficulty in expressing their opinions, feelings, and desires openly and politely. Only 26.67% of children were in the Developing According to Expectations (BSH) category, while the majority were still in the Starting to Develop and Not Yet Developing categories. In the second cycle, children demonstrated better assertiveness development through an improved approach using the theme "I Like, I Don't Like" which places more emphasis on expressing personal feelings. Observations showed that 93.3% of children had reached the minimum BSH category, and 40% of them were in the Very Well Developed (BSB) category. Thus, learning using the role-playing method has proven effective in improving assertiveness skills in early childhood at KB Al-Hidayah, and indicators of learning success have been achieved in the second cycle.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine whether flashcard games influence the reading skills of young children. The problem of low reading skills in early childhood remains a serious challenge in Indonesia. Various studies and national data show that most children aged 5–6 years have not yet mastered early reading skills appropriate to their developmental stage. This condition is exacerbated by the lack of engaging learning media and the lack of innovative approaches in reading instruction. The use of conventional methods tends to make children bored and unmotivated to learn to read. Therefore, interactive, fun solutions are needed that are appropriate to the characteristics of early childhood. One potential solution is the use of game-based learning media such as flashcards. Flashcards are visual media that can increase children's interest in letters and words while also fostering the association process between images and written symbols. The use of flashcards can improve visual memory, accelerate letter recognition, and create a fun learning atmosphere. Several studies have shown that this method is effective in improving early childhood reading skills, particularly in aspects of letter recognition and early reading as a whole. This study aimed to determine the effect of flashcard games on early childhood reading skills. The method used was an experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Subjects were given a pretest, then given treatment using flashcards, and then a posttest. Data collection was conducted through observation using indicators of language and reading development. Data analysis used a paired sample t-test to determine the significance of changes before and after treatment.

Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) profiles of 26 pre-service early childhood teachers regarding the teaching of number sense. The research is motivated by the urgency of mastering early mathematical literacy as a child's cognitive foundation, which is often hindered by teachers' limited pedagogical competence in transforming abstract content into concrete learning. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through Content Representation (CoRe) instruments, Pedagogical and Professional-experience Repertoires (PaP-eRs), analysis of Daily Lesson Plans (RPPH), and microteaching observations. The analysis assessed the mastery of Subject Matter Knowledge (SMK), covering Gelman and Gallistel’s counting principles (one-to-one correspondence, stable order, cardinality, abstraction, and order irrelevance), as well as PCK components including Knowledge of Content and Students (KCS) and Knowledge of Content and Teaching (KCT). The results revealed significant PCK profiles: 38.5% at the Pre-PCK level, 50% at the Growing PCK level, and only 11.5% reaching Maturing PCK. Key findings indicate that although the pre-service teachers possess adequate procedural knowledge regarding number sequences, there is a profound conceptual deficit in cardinality and one-to-one correspondence. Consequently, they tend to design drill-oriented, worksheet-based learning activities. Furthermore, the KCS ability to anticipate children's misconceptions was identified as the weakest aspect, as the prospective teachers often failed to detect subtle counting errors in children.

Abstract

This quantitative study investigates the effectiveness of an artificial intelligence (AI)-based instructional design training program in strengthening the digital competence of elementary school teachers in Indonesia’s frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions. Education quality and access in 3T regions remain constrained by geographical isolation, limited infrastructure, and uneven professional development opportunities for teachers. Building on the European Digital Competence Framework for Educators (DigCompEdu) and its six areas of educator digital competence, the study designed a structured training program that introduced teachers to generative AI tools for lesson planning, resource development, and assessment. A one-group pretest–posttest design was implemented with 120 elementary school teachers from several 3T districts. Data were collected using a Likert-scale digital competence questionnaire adapted from DigCompEdu and analyzed with descriptive statistics and paired-sample t-tests. Findings show statistically significant improvements in teachers’ overall digital competence scores across all six DigCompEdu areas, with the largest gains in “Teaching and learning” and “Facilitating learners’ digital competence.” The results indicate that contextually grounded AI-based instructional design training can be an effective strategy to narrow digital competence gaps between teachers in peripheral and non-peripheral regions. Implications for policy, teacher professional development, and further research on AI-supported pedagogy in disadvantaged contexts are discussed.
