Abstract

Science process skills (SPS) are an important aspect of learning science. SPS help students to develop creativity in learning. Process skills such as observing, formulating questions, interpreting, experimenting, hypothesizing, applying concepts, and communicating. This study aims to analyze the need for development resources needs of science filled with science process skills. Requirement analysis of the development of teaching materials with the skill of the process of science needs to be done because the textbook is the reference a teacher in the class. The subjects matter of chemistry the study was three senior high schools in Sambas, West Borneo. Needs analysis conducted using a qualitative approach, in terms of needs in classroom learning and content of process skills on teaching materials. Data were collected by interviews and questionnaires were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that as many as 27 percents of students perceive the book used in learning has not yet trained the science process skills. As many as 73 percents of students perceive that they need instructional materials in the form of inquiry-based chemistry modules to improve science process skills. Modules are developed based guided inquiry for having guided inquiry learning stages that can practice students' science process skills.

Abstract

The 21st-century learning paradigm is characterized by integrating technology into learning facilitating flexible and accessible learning experiences. One such model is hybrid learning, enabling education to transcend time and place with technological aid. Amidst this backdrop, it is crucial that hybrid learning provides education and fosters essential skills of the 21st century, including critical thinking and creativity. This research endeavors to establish a connection between the learning media employed in hybrid learning and the enhancement of critical thinking and creativity skills within the Science and STEM education context. The study also investigates the utilization of laboratory-based applications in chemistry instruction. Employing a meta-analysis approach with descriptive analysis methods, the researchers scrutinized 50 articles cataloged in Scopus, focusing on publications from the past decade. The meta-analysis findings unveil a significant effect size of 0.87, indicating a substantial correlation between the use of learning media and the cultivation of critical thinking skills. Moreover, the association between hybrid learning's learning media and creativity skills is evidenced by an effect size of 0.94. Consequently, it can be inferred that a substantial correlation exists between learning media in hybrid learning and the development of creativity and critical thinking abilities. The impact of laboratory-based applications and software in science education, particularly chemistry, is greatly influenced by pedagogical aspects and instructional strategies.

Abstract

Chemical literacy has a role in helping students understand local and global issues such as the energy crisis, environment, and health. Teachers need an adequate understanding of chemical literacy to plan appropriate learning and design adequate assessment instruments. This study aims to analyze the description of chemical literacy skills in chemistry teachers at Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic Senior High School). This research is a quantitative descriptive method that describes the understanding of chemical literacy. A total of 85 teachers from 12 Madrasah Aliyah in Central Java, Indonesia were respondents. The research data were obtained by questionnaire with a total of 24 statements about the components of chemical literacy. Questionnaire analysis carried out to see the relationship between teacher understanding in assessing chemical literacy, obtained by using RASCH analysis. The results showed that the reliability of the questionnaire was 0.98. Cronbach's Alpha (α) which measures the interaction between respondents and items has a value of 0.96. This value indicates the instrument used is in perfect condition and effective with a high level of reliability so that it can use in actual research. The results showed that the teachers had not fully understood the domains and aspects of chemical literacy skills. The Wright map shows only 30% of respondents (teachers) understand the aspects of chemical literacy and apply them in chemistry learning. The results of this study suggest that policymakers such as the government and educational institutions, hold more in-house training and workshops on chemical literacy for teachers.

Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of a MOOC-based Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in enhancing chemical literacy across three dimensions—content, procedural, and epistemic knowledge—among grade 10 high school students. Employing an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, the research gathered data through chemical literacy tests, interviews, and observations. The participants comprised 80 students from three districts in Central Java, Indonesia. Quantitative analysis using Rasch modeling revealed a significant improvement in scores, with an average pretest score of 44.82, increasing to 66.50 post-intervention. The effect size of 1.1819 was categorized as "good," indicating the model's potential for fostering learning. However, the average post-test score remained below the minimum completion criterion of75.80. Qualitative findings highlighted weaknesses in the problem orientation stage of the PBL model, particularly in connecting students’ prior knowledge to new learning objectives. This stage is critical for setting the foundation for subsequent PBL phases, suggesting that insufficient scaffolding may have hindered optimal learning outcomes. To enhance the effectiveness of MOOC-based PBL, the study recommends restructuring the problem orientation stage to align better with students' initial knowledge levels. These findings underscore the promise of integrating MOOC-based PBL in chemistry education while emphasizing the need for refinements to address identified challenges. By bridging gaps in problem orientation and fostering deeper connections between prior and new knowledge, this approach could more effectively support the development of chemical literacy, providing valuable insights for educators and policymakers.

Abstract

This research aims to conduct a feasibility analysis of a chemistry podcast, referred to here as “PodChem,” and to examine the impact of PodChem on learning hydrocarbons and petroleum. This study employs a pre-experimental method. The podcast media were developed using Anchor software and evaluated through a survey using a podcast media assessment questionnaire. The evaluation was carried out by lecturers as validators and students as podcast users. The assessed aspects include content, functionality, and appearance as complementary media in learning hydrocarbons and petroleum. The results indicate that the chemistry podcast PodChem was successfully produced using Anchor software. The findings suggest that PodChem is valid and suitable for educational use. The audio quality produced using Anchor is clear, and its accessibility is broad. Additionally, students reported that the content is relevant and enhances their understanding of the subject matter. Most students also found the podcast to be easily accessible and effective in conveying the concept. In terms of appearance, students agreed that the podcast title is engaging, the delivery is captivating, and the duration is appropriate. The implementation of PodChem in chemistry learning received positive feedback from students, with the majority accepting the use of podcast media in the classroom. Furthermore, 88.9% of respondents expressed a desire for podcasts to be used as complementary media in future learning, as they found podcasts to be more interesting, insightful, and easy to understand. These conclusions are supported by the results of student questionnaires and the assessment of assignments conducted by teachers in class.

Abstract

This study developed nanofibers derived from sugar palm fiber waste, incorporating citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) modifications to adsorb crystal violet (CV) dye. The synthesis process involved alkalization-acid hydrolysis and bleaching techniques. Subsequent analyses of nanofiber characteristics were conducted using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX). The efficacy of these modified nanofibers in adsorbing CV was quantitatively measured using an Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. The study successfully synthesized nanofibers from sugar palm fiber waste with modifications: PEG-modified nanofibers (NP 2 and NP 24) and citric acid-modified nanofibers (NS 2 and NS 24). These modifications resulted in nanofibers with a smooth, white texture. FTIR analysis of the samples (N, NP 2, NP 24, NS 2, and NS 24) revealed the presence of functional groups essential for cellulose, specifically -OH, C-H, and C-O groups. The addition of citric acid introduced a new group, C=O, albeit with very weak intensity. PEG modifications were evident from the stretching observed in the -OH groups. SEM analysis confirmed the presence of a layer on the nanofibers, attributed to citric acid (NS 2 and NS 24) and PEG (NP 2 and NP 24). XRD results indicated that the pre-and post-modification nanofibers exhibited a semi-crystalline phase. The adsorption mechanism was predominantly guided by Van der Waals electrostatic interactions between the absorbent material and the adsorbate. Intriguingly, the citric acid and PEG modifications did not significantly alter the adsorption outcomes. The adsorption capacity remained stable over time, as evidenced by measurements of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 minutes.

Abstract

The development of the 21st century has resulted in technology continuing to develop which has given rise to global interactions and connections. To overcome the loss of national culture, critical thinking ability and understanding of global diversity need to be implemented in schools. This can be done through introducing the culture around students. However, in reality, until now learning and assessment have not focused enough on critical thinking skills and global diversity because they focus more on content mastery and most teachers emphasize material mastery when conducting assessments. Therefore, to prove this problem, a needs analysis is needed. The method used in this research is through a qualitative descriptive method with documentation, literature study, and interviews with five science teachers in several junior high schools in the city of Surakarta. While quantitative through a questionnaire filled in by 42 students. The result of this needs analysis is that the development of assessment instruments used to measure critical thinking ability and culture-based global diversity at the junior high school level is very necessary, especially in science learning. It is hoped that the implications of the results of this research will be future research development regarding culture-based assessment instruments to measure critical thinking skills and global diversity at the junior high school level.
