Abstract

This study examines different methodologies for representing an asynchronous motor at higher harmonics by utilizing its equivalent circuit. Several approaches were compared based on simulation modeling. An experimental investigation was conducted in a laboratory setting using asynchronous electric motors with power ratings of 1.5 kW and 5.5 kW. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the characteristics of impedance in the presence of high-harmonic conditions. The generation of higher harmonics was achieved through the utilization of a precisely regulated thyristor rectifier in conjunction with a thyristor power controller. The findings indicate that the load on the shaft solely impacts the resistance at the fundamental harmonic, while the resistance at higher harmonics remains unaffected by the operating mode of the asynchronous motor (AM).

Abstract

This paper proposes a novel approach to predicting child alimony under Islamic Shariah law using a hybrid fuzzy inference system, integrating Mamdani and Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy systems. Machine learning algorithms have become valuable tools for legal decision-making, but judicial process delays can lead to adverse effects. Our model aims to expedite decision-making and minimize legal fees by accurately determining the proper amount of alimony for children after divorce. We collected data from 94 alimony cases and evaluated the model’s performance using accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score metrics. The hybrid fuzzy system achieved promising results with 88% accuracy, 84% precision, 89% recall, and an 86% F1 score. Notably, the model reduced bias and standardization in decision-making, promoting fairness. However, the study suggests potential areas for improvement and emphasizes trans-parent judgment processes and coordination among judges in assessing alimony costs based on sufficiency and ma’ruf criteria. This research significantly contributes to machine learning applications in the judicial domain. It provides a valuable decision-making tool for judges and lawyers to enhance the judicial process’s efficiency and ensure children’s welfare in divorce cases under Islamic Shariah law. Further research can enhance the model’s effectiveness and reliability, opening avenues for continued exploration in this field.

Abstract

The augmented reality (AR) technology had been proliferating for years. However, the implementation of AR technology still has room to be explored, especially in the form of cultural heritage preservation. The aim of this study is to enhance AR technology in game-based cultural heritage and history preservation in Sarawak, as well as supplement the gamified experiences in learning James Brooke’s history. Three research objectives are proposed: to design an AR game prototype for the history of James Brooke; to develop an AR game prototype with a collaborative learning element; and to evaluate an AR game prototype for enhancing cultural heritage preservation. This study proposes a game-based prototype that contains AR markers to assign each with different game features. Furthermore, collaborative learning theory is enhanced through AR experiences with multiplayer support. The game-based prototype is evaluated by a group of participants through prototype measuring and testing. The participants feel mediocre about the challenge and knowledge factors of the prototype. Overall, this study highlights the enhancement of cultural heritage preservation through AR game-based experiences intensively learned from James Brooke’s history in Sarawak. These implementations have an apparent promising contribution to make in protecting the available cultural heritage in Sarawak and extensively to the country’s cultural heritage preservation.

Abstract

The increasing demand for power has caused distortions in Nigeria’s 330 kV transmission network. This is a result of the bulk of the lines being heavily loaded at the moment, which leads to voltage drops and inconsistent electrical delivery. To ensure system reliability, it is therefore crucial to make sure that the system maintains a constant state under specific conditions. This research presents the use of static synchronous compensators (STATCOM) in the Nigerian 330 kV transmission network to reduce power loss and improve the voltage profile. To solve the problem of insufficient voltage and power losses, a three-phase network is simulated using the MATLAB/Simulink software. A three-level, 48- pulse STATCOM was employed to rectify the problem after weak buses were identified through load flow analysis. A 48- pulse converter that handled the STATCOM was used to control harmonic distortions in the system. The outcomes show how crucial the reactive power control mechanism is for regulating the system’s harmonics. However, the method was able to achieve real and reactive power losses of 12.5%. The STATCOM’s 3-level 48- pulse converter also resulted in a total 4.64% reduction in total harmonic distortion (THD).

Abstract

This article presents two miniaturized antennas designed for retinal prosthesis devices, aimed at enhancing vision for blind individuals with functional optic nerves. The implantable antenna is 2.2 mm wide, 2.15 mm tall, and 0.78 mm thick. It works in the ISM bands but is small because it uses slot incorporation and high-permittivity substrates. High-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) electromagnetic simulations show great performance, with a 16.66% impedance bandwidth at 2.4 GHz and a 10.34% bandwidth at 5.8 GHz. The peak gain values are -27.76 dB at 2.4 GHz and -16.40 dB at 5.8 GHz. We have also developed an extraocular antenna for telemetry and energy transfer, with dimensions of 36×36×1.6 mm3 . Validation through CST calculation software confirms the efficacy of both antenna designs. Implantable antennas hold significant promise in biomedical antenna research, demonstrating capabilities conducive to retinal implantation and offering potential advancements in vision restoration technology.

Abstract

Inadequate sleep can cause various health problems including heart disease and obesity. In this work, a sleep monitoring system that monitors human sleep patterns is developed using the internet of things (IoT) and Raspberry Pi. The system is designed to record any detected movements and process the data using machine learning to provide valuable insight into a person’s sleep patterns including sleep duration, the time taken to fall asleep, and the frequency of waking up. This information is very useful to provide the sleep disorder diagnostics of an individual including restless leg, parasomnia and insomnia syndrome besides giving recommendations to improve their sleep quality. Also, the system allows the processed data to be stored in the cloud database which can be accessed through a mobile application or web interface. The performance of the system is evaluated in terms of its accuracy and reliability in detecting sleep order diagnostics. Based on the confusion matrix, the results show the accuracy of the system is 90.32%, 91.80%, and 91.80% in detecting the restless leg, parasomnia and insomnia syndrome, respectively. Meanwhile, the system showed high reliability in monitoring 10 participants for 8 hours and updated the recorded data and its analysis in the cloud.

Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of the dynamic performance of a three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) AC-DC converter utilizing the advanced control technique of virtual flux direct power control (VFDPC). VFDPC estimates the three-phase grid voltage and instantaneous active and reactive power components, eliminating the need for an AC input voltage sensor used in conventional direct power control (DPC). This reduction in sensors decreases system complexity and cost while mitigating high-frequency noise and interference. Integrating VFDPC into 3L NPC AC-DC converters significantly enhances overall performance, leading to more efficient and robust power conversion systems. However, a significant challenge in the three-level NPC topology is the voltage imbalance in the neutral point of the DC-link capacitor, which can cause excessive voltage stress on switching devices and degrade system performance. To address this, a novel lookup table has been developed, incorporating strategies to balance the capacitor voltage. The results of this study demonstrate that VFDPC generates nearly sinusoidal line currents with reduced current total harmonic distortion (THD). Additionally, VFDPC ensures unity, lagging, and leading power factor operation, while providing flexibility to adjust the DC-link output voltage and accommodate load variations. These capabilities highlight VFDPC effectiveness in managing power quality and system stability, even under varying load conditions.

Abstract

In recent years, long-range wide-area networks (LoRaWAN) have gained much attention as low-power wide-area networks. LoRaWAN uses ALOHA as the medium access control protocol, where the end devices transmit data randomly and retransmit it up to eight times if collisions occur. ALOHA is not energy efficient and works perfectly for a smaller network. Several techniques, including the use of synchronization and scheduling schemes, to deal with the limitations imposed by ALOHA in LoRaWAN have been reported in the literature. However, the existing synchronization and scheduling algorithms transmit synchronization messages randomly using one super frame with fixed time slots that accommodate devices using different spreading factors, which limit the LoRaWAN network's scalability. This work proposes a slotted synchronization mechanism for transmitting synchronization requests to the gateway. The performance of the slotted synchronization was evaluated through simulation using packet delivery ratio (PDR) and energy efficiency as the performance parameters. The results indicate that when the number of devices in the network increases, a time-slotted synchronization consumes less energy, on average, by about 0.2 mAh. The use of a slotted synchronization can improve the energy efficiency of the end devices as collisions are completely avoided, achieving a PDR of 100%.

Abstract

In this paper, a decision support system (DSS) is provided to assist the decision-maker in obtaining the best solution for the transportation problem under uncertainty. Fuzzy parameters of the transportation problem are presented by pentagonal fuzzy numbers. The centroid ranking function transforms these pentagonal fuzzy numbers into crisp ones. Then, a novel, improved greedy method named Dhouib-Matrix-TP1 (DM-TP1) is used in order to help the decision-maker promptly find a suitable solution. Specifically, this DSS is composed of three components: the data base component considers a pentagonal fuzzy number; the Model Base component thinks through the original heuristic DM-TP1; and the User Interface component deliberates the convivial graphical output of the generated transportation plan solution using the Python programming language. Experiments in the literature on fuzzy transportation problems show that the novel proposed heuristic, DM-TP1, is easy to understand and allows the decision-maker to handle transportation problems under pentagonal fuzzy numbers. Also, the DM-TP1 is robust and can be applied to find a feasible initial solution in less time.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal eye aspect ratio (EAR) for a prototype capable of using computer vision techniques to detect driver sleepiness based on eyelid size changes. The prototype, developed with Raspberry Pi and OpenCV, provides a real-time evaluation of the driver's level of alertness. The prototype can accurately determine the onset of sleepiness by monitoring and detecting instances of prolonged eyelid closure. Due to the fact that the eye aspect ratios of different individuals vary in size, the system's accuracy may be compromised. For the first experiment, the research focuses on determining the optimal EAR threshold of the proposed prototype using a sample of 20 participants ranging in age from 20 to 30, 31 to 40, and 41 to 50 years old. The study also examines the effects of various environmental conditions, such as dark or nighttime settings and the use of spectacle. The optimal EAR threshold value, as dedicated by the first experiment, is 0.225 after testing 20 participants with and without eyeglasses in low and bright lighting and 7 participants with a 0.225 EAR threshold in dark and bright lighting environments. The result shows 100% precision.
