Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the motivation of eighth-grade students at SMP Cita Buana Jakarta in writing poetry using a psycholinguistic approach. A case study method was employed, with data collection techniques including semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. The findings reveal that while most students enjoy the process of writing poetry, their motivation is predominantly driven by external factors, such as teacher assignments. The main challenges faced include generating ideas and selecting appropriate words. The school environment, teachers' roles, and peer appreciation significantly impact students' motivation. The study recommends integrating creative approaches such as exploring local themes, diction games, and poetry competitions to enhance students' intrinsic motivation. Thus, poetry writing can become a more enjoyable, meaningful, and relevant activity for students.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of information technology has significantly transformed educational practices, particularly in the shift from conventional to digital learning models. In response to this transformation and the implementation of online learning policies by the Ministry of Education and Culture, this study aims to develop electronic teaching materials using a scientific approach for Indonesian language instruction in Class XI of vocational high schools. This research employed a development research design using the 4D model by Thiagarajan, which includes the stages of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. However, the study focused solely on the first three stages due to time and resource constraints. The teaching materials were developed in the form of flipbook-based electronic modules and subjected to expert validation. Three domains were assessed: content (by material experts), language (by linguists), and visual design (by graphic experts). The validation results showed that the electronic flipbook teaching materials achieved an average feasibility score of 83.32%, which falls into the "Very Appropriate" category. Feedback from experts indicated strong alignment with curriculum standards, appropriate language usage for the target audience, and effective visual presentation. In conclusion, the developed flipbook-based electronic teaching materials are highly suitable for use in Class XI Indonesian language instruction, particularly in online learning contexts. Future research should focus on the dissemination stage and include empirical testing of learning outcomes with students to determine effectiveness in real classroom settings.

Abstract

Many gays in Indonesia dare to admit and open themselves that they are gay. Gay who has come out (coming out) usually realizes that he likes the same sex or often called SSA (Same Sex Attraction). The term coming out refers to how a gay person opens himself up to his sexual orientation. Gay openness about his sexual orientation (coming out) to the family, community, and community is preceded by the process of coming in, namely the process of self-acceptance that he has a sexual orientation that likes same-sex. or community only. If he fails to come in, then he will become an SSA (Same Sex Attraction) but tries to suppress his behavior so he does not become gay. The purpose of this study is to determine the motivations that cause gays to become gay coming out as self-identity in Indonesia. The research method uses a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, observation, FGD, and literature study. Data analysis uses the Miles & Huberman Interactive Model. The results showed that there are 15 reasons for a person to become gay in 3 (three) contexts of the formation of gay self-identity in this study, namely family, psychological trauma, and social environment.

Abstract

Abstract

The ability to write inspirational stories constitutes an essential aspect of the pedagogical competence of prospective Indonesian language teachers. However, empirical evidence indicates that this type of narrative writing has not received sufficient attention within teacher education curricula, resulting in various internal and external challenges. This study aims to provide an in-depth needs analysis by examining the barriers, opportunities, challenges, and instructional model development encountered by prospective Indonesian language teachers in writing inspirational stories. Employing a qualitative descriptive-narrative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving students of an Indonesian Language Education program at a public university in Indonesia. The findings reveal that the primary barriers stem from low self-efficacy, limited philosophical understanding of the concept of “inspirational,” and insufficient engagement in reflective writing practices during their academic training. Meanwhile, opportunities emerge through experience-based training, creative mentoring, and the implementation of storytelling practices in authentic contexts. The major challenge lies in the misalignment between professional practice demands and curriculum design, which tends to prioritize academic aspects over practical competencies. Therefore, the development of an instructional model for teaching writing is necessary to produce high-quality and meaningful texts. The study concludes that the most significant challenge is not merely technical, but rather rooted in prospective teachers’ limited conceptual understanding of the educational function of narratives. This study contributes theoretically to the development of a narrative framework in teacher education and offers practical implications through the integration of storytelling into the curriculum and training programs for prospective Indonesian language teachers.

Abstract

Teacher well-being is an essential foundation for effective language education, yet little is known about how experienced Indonesian EFL teachers understand and sustain their emotional and professional balance. This study addresses the question of how Indonesian EFL teachers conceptualize and maintain their well-being in relation to their classroom roles and daily practices. The research was conducted in senior high schools across seven urban areas in Indonesia, with 17 teachers aged 27 to 47. Data were collected through in-depth semi-structured interviews and reflective journals, and were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns across participants’ accounts. The findings showed that teachers viewed well-being as grounded in meaningful teaching, positive relationships with students and colleagues, intentional classroom strategies that supported enjoyment and emotional steadiness, and cultural and spiritual values that strengthened their sense of purpose. Teachers also described institutional demands and administrative workload as threats to well-being, which they managed through boundary setting, selective task focus, and personal coping routines. The study concludes that teacher well-being emerges from the interplay of emotional fulfillment, social connection, pedagogical agency, and value-based reflection. The implications suggest that leaders and policymakers should prioritize supportive school cultures, reasonable workloads, and professional development that strengthens emotional awareness and reflective practice.

Abstract

Critical thinking is widely recognized as a key objective in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing instruction. However, few studies have explored how it is demonstrated in specific academic genres. This study examined how EFL university students expressed critical thinking through the writing of comparison-contrast essays. Guided by Paul and Elder’s (2020) critical thinking framework, the study addressed the question: How do EFL students demonstrate critical thinking in the process of composing comparison-contrast essays? The research took place in an essay writing course at a university in Jakarta, Indonesia, involving 20 fifth-semester English education majors aged 21–23. Data included students’ essays and their written reflections on the writing process. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis, applying the elements and intellectual standards of critical thinking to identify patterns of reasoning. The findings showed that students demonstrated critical thinking through analytical categorization, evaluative judgments, integration of perspectives, and logical organization. Reflections revealed deliberate thinking strategies that supported the writing process. The study concludes that comparison-contrast writing, when paired with structured instruction and reflective practice, provides a productive platform for developing critical thinking. These insights contribute to genre-based writing pedagogy and support the integration of critical thinking as a central goal in EFL education
