This research is to find out how the use of cohesion and coherence in the story of "Layangan Putus", which was viral some time ago. Because cohesion and coherence are important criteria and principles in a text. This research is expected to contribute to the development of the quality of story writing. So the story can be understood and useful for the readers. Thus, the purpose of writing stories can inspire readers. The method used to analyze cohesion and coherence was a descriptive analysis seen in each paragraph. The cohesion aspects analyzed were lexical and grammatical cohesion aspects. The results of this study indicated that the story of "Layangan Putus" had aspects of lexical cohesion, grammatical cohesion, and coherence. Aspects of cohesion and constructive coherence in which discourse can convey a message to readers. In this way, the contents of the story can make the reader into feeling what the writer feel.

Establishing autonomous language learning is believed to be critical because it contributes to learners’ capabilities in independently mastering a target language. One of many strategies employed to develop learner autonomy is to incorporate modern technology, such as smartphones, into language learning activities (Steel, 2012). However, the implementation of modern technology in the learning process seems quite ineffective in creating situations in which the learner’s autonomy is achieved (Na, 2018). Henceforth, the present study is projected to seek the beneficial impacts of the Edmodo, Duolingo, Memrise, Socrative and Quizlet applications. The qualitative method and the substitution-augmentation-modification-redefinition model are adopted to examine and discuss the findings. Employing mobile applications facilitates learners to not only learn the language but also to acquire the target language to develop their language competence. Additionally, incorporating mobile applications can assist learners in fostering self-instructed, self-directed, self-accessed learning, and the individualised instruction of language learners.

his article discusses the van dijk’s analysis on daring news lobster seed export corruption cases. The aim of this study is to analyze, and describe how the text structures, social cognition and social context as the elements of van Dijk’s analysis in analyzing daring news. This study using a qualitative descriptive research method, the type of research is library research. Then this study is a qualitative approach and critical discourse analysis approach is Teun A. van Dijk model. The subjects of this study were daring news namely Tempo.co, Tirto.id and BBC News, which were published November 26 to 30-2020 according to the incident. The results showed that from the three news reports meet the level of discourse analysis using van Dijk model, namely text structure (macro structure, superstructure, and micro structure), after that the element of social cognition and social context of the corruption case became one of the bed social phenomena, because it does not reflect a good personal example.

This paper studies President Joko Widodo self-image through his International speech. In order to do so, the researcher use critical linguistics approach proposed by Fowler (1979) that focuses on Halliday’s Systemic Functional namely textual and ideational function. The data source are in the form of the text speech that performed by Joko Widodo in the International Speech at the World Economic ASEAN 2018. The researcher downloaded the data from YouTube in the form of video then transcribed it into the written form. The researcher chooses the data, formulate and take a note based on the aim of the study. The researcher uses Norman Fairclough theory to analyze the data. Based on Halliday’s metafunction, the writer only analyzes based on textual and social practice analyze. The results can be emphasizing that using grammar; it can reveal speaker’s purpose and help in describing argumentative phases in the speech text. On this way, Joko Widodo can build self-image by deliver his industrial program and opinion through appropriate word choice by delivering his industrial program and opinion through appropriate word choice.

As an effort to give contribution to the existing knowledge, it is expected for the undergraduate students to compose an engaging research article in order to convince the readers about the importance of the research article. However, there is only a little attention given to the articles written by the undergraduate students although it is considered very critical to examine whether the exposure of English academic writing has significantly enhances the writing competence of the students. Furthermore, as it is also very crucial to build a meaningful semantic meaning among the sentences in order to disclose the worthiness of the research article, it is essential to analyze the cohesion of the research article written by the undergraduate students. Henceforth, the present research is projected to investigate the cohesion of the research articles written by the undergraduate students of English Language Teaching. As the introduction section of research article is likely to be an area to portray the logical explanation of the research, the present research solely focuses on examining the cohesion of the introduction section of research article. By adopting a qualitative design and involving several steps to analyze the introduction section, it is revealed that the grammatical cohesion is considered to be the most utilized type of cohesion in writing the introduction section. Still, the lexical cohesion is also necessary to build an eloquent semantic meaning about the topic as well the importance of the research article.

Abstract: The Phenomenon of Hijrah in Indonesia: Persuasive Content of Instagram. This article purpose’s is to describe how the hijrah account declare the hijrah persuasive invitation. The Datas are lingual unit that from Instagram account and have hijrah invitation meaning, there are @berani hijrah, @pemudahijrah, anda #hijrah. The discourse analysis content use van Dijk Methode as the way with marking reading technique. Lingual units that are suspected of data are analyzed based on the semantic meaning of word selection and their social context through the agihmethode. The results of this study are (1) direct rethoric, (2) indirect rethoric, (3) use Hadis, prayer and hope, (4) use story, (5) expression, (6) majas and (7) repetition.

The use of satire language style by a film creator aims to convey meaning to the public. This study aims at analyzing the use of satire language styles used by Bu Tejo in a short film entitled "Tilik." This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The object of this research is satire utterances spoken by Bu Tejo in the film "Tilik." The data collection techniques in this study used observation, listening, and note-taking techniques. The results demonstrate three types of satire languages used by Bu Tejo in the film “Tilik": cynicism, irony, and sarcasm. It is also found that cynicism is the most spoken language than sarcasm. The study highlights that the use of satire language uttered by Bu Tejo aims to convey ideas and perspectives related to problems occurring in society and express dissatisfaction.

Racism is not only an internal issue of a country while discussing pluralistic society. The racism in the US must attain multitudes international attentions due to diversity of the people, including Asians with diverse races. The purposes of this study are to investigate how the ideology of racism is constructed through language and why the racism is occurred in pluralistic society of the US. The data for this study is two bilingual talks of Oliver Prass in KOMPAS TV. The CDA is adopted as tool to explore and discover racism ideology though language representation. The result on textual dimension with transitivity process depicts that racism ideology occurs in different forms to show effect of personal feeling and psychological effect from racist people toward the victims. In discursive dimension, to emphasize a hidden agenda of a discourse requires the speaker status and position during producing the language; for instance, as social activist, victims, and Indonesian. Then in social practices implies the reason why racism is existing; those are as a defense mechanism, economic anxiety, personality profile and power as well as authority abuse by the government that may lead to racism treatment on minorities by discrimination and negative prejudice.

Ketersampaian pesan dan referensi makna pada karya sastra menjadi permasalahan yang serius ketika berhubungan dengan teks terjemahan. Keaslian nilai dan ideologi dari teks bahasa sumber sering mengalami distorsi ketika mengalami proses penerjemahan. Terlebih lagi jika sebuah karya sastra memiliki nilai filosofis yang kuat terutama karya sastra bertemakan lingkungan (ekologi). Penelitian ini berisi penjelasan secara kualitatif terkait penilaian kualtas penerjemahan pada diskursus ekologi novela The Old Man and the Sea dan terjemahannya Lelaki Tua dan Laut. Perbandingan meliputi dua fitur, yaitu fitur leksikal dan fitur semantik. Dalam hal fitur leksikal, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa istilah-istilah ekologi dalam bahasa sumber menunjukkan transparansi yang rendah bagi mereka yang tidak memahami konteks geografi istilah-istilah tersebut. Pada teks terjemahannya, istilah ekologi memiliki transparansi yang lebih tinggi karena penerjemah menggunakan bahasa yang lebih komunikatif. Untuk fitur semantik, istilah ekologi pada teks bahasa sumber memiliki rujukan makna teknis yang kuat, sedangkan pada teks terjemahannya, istilah ekologi merepresentasikan rujukan makna yang lebih deskriptif.Kata kunci: istilah ekologi, novela, Penilaian Kualitas Penerjemahan

FEMINIST DISCOURSE ANALYSIS ON KOMPAS.COM NEWS: ATLET SENAM SEA GAMES DIPULANGKAN KARENA TAK PERAWAN Dian Lestari; Sulis Triyono

This study aims to describe the representation in the case of a woman in the discourse of SEA GAMES gymnastics athlete who was sent back home because of a virginity issue that was published by Kompas.com on the 29th of November, 2019. The discourse is a hot topic because it raises the pros and cons. Besides social context, this study also describes the structure of the text consisting of macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure. The research approach uses critical discourse analysis by Van Dijk. The results of this study indicate that the news text has a main topic, namely the violation againts feminist values. The superstructure of the news text consists of an introduction, main text, and concluding part. Kompas.com through the micro structure chooses to use various diction in delivering news. In addition to diverse diction, the text is also built with cohesion and coherence to unify the meaning of discourse. The social context built by Kompas.com in this discourse, especially in representing womanis the persecution of women (gender bias) and professional violations of a person.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memaparkan representasi perempuan dalam wacana atlet senam SEA GAMES dipulangkan karena tidak perawan yangdiberitakan pada Kompas.com pada 29 November 2019. Wacana tersebut merupakan wacana yang sedang hangat diperbincangkan karena menimbulkan pro dan kontra di kalangan masyarakat. Selain konteks sosial, penelitian ini juga mendeskripsikan struktur teks berita yang terdiri atas struktur makro, superstruktur, dan struktur mikro. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan analisis wacana kritis model Van Dijk. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa teks berita mempunyai topik utama, yakni pelanggaran nilai-nilai feminisme. Selanjutnya, superstruktur teks berita terdiri atas pendahuluan, inti teks, dan penutupan berita. Kompas.com melalui struktur mikro memilih untuk menggunakan berbagai macam diksi dalam menyampaikan berita. Selain diksi yang beragam, teks dibangun dengan piranti kohesi dan koherensi untuk menyatukan makna wacana. Konteks sosial yang dibangun Kompas.comterutama dalam merepresentasikan perempuan pada wacana tersebut adalah adanya penindasan terhadap perempuan (bias gender) serta pelanggaran profesionalitas suatu oknum.
