Abstract

Deviant behavior among elementary school students remains a critical issue in basic education because it can disrupt the learning process and hinder character formation and children's psychosocial well-being. At this stage, students are increasingly exposed to broader environmental influences, including peers, digital media, and family dynamics, which have the potential to trigger behaviors such as dishonesty, bullying, and rule-breaking. This community service activity aims to increase students' understanding of the forms, causes, and impacts of deviant behavior, while equipping them with practical strategies to prevent and address it. Furthermore, this activity also aims to encourage students' role as agents of positive change and strengthen collaboration between students, teachers, and parents in strengthening character education. The activity was held on August 29, 2025, at Kartika Jaya Elementary School XXI-1, Manado City, using an educational-participatory approach through interactive lectures, case study-based group discussions, simulations and role-playing, and reflection sessions. Evaluation was carried out through direct observation and responsive feedback from participants. The results of the activity showed an increase in students' understanding of deviant behavior and its causal factors, as well as an increase in their ability to implement prevention strategies, such as rejecting negative influences, reporting inappropriate behavior, and building positive social interactions. Students also demonstrated a commitment to implementing positive behavior in their daily lives, supported by active participation and positive responses from both students and teachers. It was concluded that a participatory and contextual educational approach was effective in raising awareness and shaping positive attitudes in elementary school students. Therefore, ongoing mentoring, strengthening the role of parents, and integrating character education into the school curriculum are recommended to ensure the sustainability of the activity's impact.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide and represent a major challenge to public health development, including in Indonesia. The high prevalence of NCDs such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular diseases is closely associated with low levels of public awareness and unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. Therefore, promotional efforts through health education are essential strategies to enhance community knowledge and awareness regarding NCD prevention. This community service activity aims to improve public knowledge of non-communicable diseases and their prevention through health education interventions. The implementation method employed an educational approach through health counseling , accompanied by pre-test and post-test assessments to measure participants' knowledge before and after the intervention. The materials delivered included the definition of NCDs, risk factors, health impacts, and preventive measures through clean and healthy lifestyle behaviors . The educational sessions were conducted interactively using lectures, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. The results showed that prior to the intervention, the majority of participants (93.3%) already had a good level of knowledge. After the health education intervention, this increased to 100% of participants achieving a good knowledge category. Additionally, participants demonstrate high enthusiasm during the activity, as reflected in their active participation in discussions and their ability to respond to questions related to the materials presented. In conclusion, health education counseling proved to be effective in improving community knowledge regarding non-communicable diseases. This improvement in knowledge is expected to serve as a foundation for promoting sustainable healthy behavior changes. However, follow-up efforts such as continuous mentoring and evaluation are necessary to ensure the practical implementation of knowledge in daily life in order to reduce the incidence of NCDs in the community.

Abstract

Background: Sleep is a fundamental biological need and is one of the main determinants of physical health, cognitive function, and psychosocial well-being. In young adults, including students, sleep patterns often undergo changes due to academic demands, lifestyle, and environmental factors, consequently, insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality are common health problems among university students. Neurophysiological mechanisms that link sleep to learning and memory capacity have been widely explained: certain sleep phases support memory consolidation and information processing critical for short- and long-term learning. Purpose: To examine the associations of sleep duration and sleep quality with academic functioning, while assessing academic stress as a potential mediator and physical activity as a potential confounder. Method: An observational study with a cross-sectional approach was employed to evaluate the relationship between sleep duration and sleep quality with the academic function of students at a single time point, taking into account the role of academic stress and health behavior based on the Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) causal framework and reported in accordance with STROBE guidelines. Results: The relationship between sleep duration and sleep quality with academic function differs according to the type of indicator, where sleep quality is positively associated with motivation to learn (subjective indicators), but does not show significant association with GPA as an objective indicator after multivariate analysis. In addition, there was no meaningful link between sleep and academic stress, and physical activity was not proven to be the main potential confounder that explains sleep relation to objective academic achievement. Overall, sleep has a stronger association on the subjective aspects of academic experience than objective results, and academic stress does not act as a significant mediator, so relationship between sleep and academic functioning are complex and nonlinear. Conclusion: Overall, sleep duration and sleep quality have a stronger association on the subjective aspects of academic functioning such as motivation to learn than objective achievement (GPA), without a significant role of academic stress as mediator or physical activity as the main potential confounder, so that the relationship is complex and nonlinear.

Abstract

Background: Commercial areas with dense motorized vehicle activity, such as Mega Mas in Manado City, are sources of ambient air pollutant emissions, especially Nitrogen Dioxide (NO₂) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO₂). Exposure to these pollutants has the potential to cause negative impacts on public health and the environment. This study aims to analyze ambient air quality based on NO₂ and SO₂ parameters and meteorological factors (temperature, humidity, wind speed) at the exit portal of the Mega Mas Area. Research Methods: This study is observational with a cross-sectional approach. Sampling was carried out purposively at two points (Point 1 MTC and Point 2 in front of IT) in the morning and afternoon, with two replications per point. The concentrations of NO₂ and SO₂ were measured using a High Volume Air Sampler (HVAS) with the Griess-Saltzman and Pararosanilin methods, then analyzed spectrophotometrically. The data were analyzed descriptively for univariate (variable characteristics), bivariate (meteorological parameters and pollutant relationships), and spatial-temporal analysis. Research Results: The measurement results showed that NO₂ concentrations ranged from 2-22 µg/Nm³, while SO₂ between 4-14 µg/Nm³. All of these values are still far below the Threshold Limit Value (NAB) according to the Indonesian Minister of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023. The analysis showed a high variation in concentration, especially NO₂ at Point 1 in the afternoon (22 µg/Nm³). Wind speed was shown to have a significant effect on pollutant dispersion, where the highest concentration was recorded at low wind speeds (2.5-2.7 m/s). Vehicle activity patterns and microlocation conditions that inhibit dispersion are suspected to be the main causes of the observed variations. Conclusion: It was concluded that the ambient air quality at the exit portal of the Mega Mas Area based on NO₂ and SO₂ parameters still meets quality standards. However, significant fluctuations in concentrations, particularly during calm wind conditions, indicate the potential for local accumulation of pollutants. Routine monitoring and proper traffic management are required to minimize pollutant exposure, especially for workers working in the area for long periods.

Abstract

Pulmonary Tuberculosis (Pulmonary TB) remains a serious global and national health problem, with Indonesia ranking second in the global TB case burden. Bitung City is the area with the second highest cases of Pulmonary TB in North Sulawesi Province, with a prevalence rate that tends to increase. Environmental factors such as population density and the physical condition of the house are suspected to play a role in the spread of the disease. Spatial analysis is needed to understand disease distribution patterns to support effective, region-based interventions. This study aims to describe the spatial distribution of Tuberculosis disease in Bitung City based on the altitude of the place and population density. This study uses a spatial analysis approach by mapping data on area height, population density, and the average number of pulmonary TB cases per year (2020-2023 period) in each sub-district in Bitung City. The data is analyzed descriptively by grouping each variable into specific categories and visualized in the form of a thematic map. The results of the study show that all sub-districts in Bitung City are included in the lowland category (0-200 meters above sea level), so that no significant variation was found in terms of the height of the place. A total of five sub-districts have a high population density, namely Aertembaga, Girian, Madidir, Maesa, and Matuari. This sub-district with a high population density also recorded the highest number of pulmonary TB cases, with Maesa as the sub-district with the highest cases (97.5 cases per year), followed by Girian, Aertembaga, Matuari, and Madidir. It was concluded that the distribution of pulmonary TB cases in Bitung City did not show variation based on the altitude of the place, but had a correlation with population density. Districts with high population density tend to be the areas with the highest burden of Pulmonary TB cases. These findings emphasize the importance of public health interventions focused on densely populated areas to control the transmission of pulmonary TB.
