Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of English textbooks for economics in aligning with the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, which integrates technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge to enhance language learning. Descriptive qualitative was applied in this study. The analysis focused on four English textbooks: Career Path: Banking, Career Path: Business English, General English Material for Economic Students, and English for Islamic Banking. The evaluation revealed several limitations in these textbooks, such as inadequate alignment with economic content, lack of clear target audience and instructional objectives, insufficient technology integration, and minimal opportunities for interactive and dynamic learning experiences. These deficiencies were found to delay the development of essential language skills, including grammar, pronunciation, and communication, which are crucial for academic and professional success in the field of economics and banking. Furthermore, the analysis highlighted the absence of diverse activities that connect language skills with real-world applications, limiting the students' ability to effectively apply their knowledge in relevant scenarios. The textbooks also lacked comprehensive instructional support for listening and writing skills, critical thinking, and digital literacy, which are vital components of a modern, technology-enhanced learning environment. The study suggests that a more tailored approach, incorporating the TPACK framework, is necessary to address these gaps. By fostering interactive and immersive learning experiences, future textbooks can better meet the specific needs of economics students, promote active participation, and enhance both linguistic competence and digital literacy skills in preparation for global economic challenges.

Abstract

Current Learning systems have enabled students to construct their knowledge by themselves. However, using various LMS will cause different learning situations and experiences for students in learning. This study investigates the effectiveness of Moodle-based learning activities in fostering self-regulated learning (SRL) among undergraduate students. The research was conducted over 8 weeks with 100 participants, employing a mixed-methods approach that included pre-and post-surveys, learning analytics, and qualitative data from focus groups and interviews. The findings reveal significant improvements in key SRL components: goal setting, self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and time management. Quantitative data from the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) showed statistically significant gains across all SRL dimensions (p < 0.01). Learning analytics indicated that student engagement increased, reflected in doubled login frequency, a 33.3% rise in task completion rates, and a 66.7% increase in time spent on learning tasks. Qualitative data supported these results, highlighting the positive impact of Moodle’s tools on students' autonomy, motivation, and reflective learning practices. The study concludes that Moodle-based activities can effectively promote SRL by providing structured, interactive, and reflective learning experiences. Recommendations are made for educators to integrate diverse Moodle activities that target different SRL components and for institutions to provide continuous support and infrastructure improvements.

Abstract

Merdeka Belajar curriculum is the brand-new curriculum implemented in Indonesia in response to the low reading literacy of students. Many discussed the features and the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum and claim that implementing the current curriculum is effective in improving students' reading literacy due to its features, such as simpler yet in-depth materials and flexible time for learning outcome accomplishment; however, there is not yet any empirical evidence provided to prove the claim. This descriptive research was undertaken to provide empirical evidence of that claim as the curriculum has just been implemented. Twelve teachers across senior high schools in West Sumatera were willingly involved in this study. The data were collected through a written interview, in which the teachers answered ten relevant questions. Their responses about the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum were analyzed qualitatively. The findings established new facts that answered the research question from the teachers' point of view. First, compared to the 2013 curriculum implementation, they did not only see the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum as advantageous but also disadvantageous. Even few of them found it run-of-the-mill. Second, when implementing the current curriculum, the teacher developed strategies to increase students' reading literacy and interest. They began by supplying multiple materials, designing fun but exhaustive learning instructional activities, varying the assessments, and building reading corners with captivating books to read. Third, after a year of implementation, the students' reading literacy tended to stay the same, even though it did improve a little for some students. These were because the teachers still experienced problems regarding curriculum, school, and time. In summary, implementing the Merdeka Belajar curriculum cannot improve students' reading literacy.

Abstract

Studies on English language learning practices in Sport have received considerable interest from scholars in recent years due to the significance of English skills for graduates in the job market and professional settings. However, there is limited research that has focused on investigating the needs of Sport students in learning English through effective pedagogical approaches that integrate Project-based Learning (PjBL) with 4C skills: Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity. This study aims to 1) investigate the specific English learning needs of Sport students in higher education, and 2) examine preferred learning approaches that integrate PjBL with 4C skills. This exploratory sequential mixed-methods design combined quantitative data from structured questionnaires with qualitative insights from interviews, involving 52 sport students (30 males and 22 females) at a higher education institution in Sungai Penuh, Jambi, Indonesia. The findings reveal that sports students require proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar, with a particular emphasis on sports-specific terminology and contexts. Furthermore, the qualitative results indicate that students strongly favor learning approaches that are collaborative, authentic, and project-based. They perceive Project-Based Learning (PBL) as highly effective, particularly when it promotes 4C skills. Students expressed those tasks such as video creation, podcast production, simulations, and team discussions enhance their engagement, confidence, and practical language use. These findings suggest that integrating PjBL with 4C skills into English instruction is essential for meeting the specific language needs of sports students and enhancing their readiness for global professional environments.

Abstract

This study investigates the attitudes and motivations of third-semester students in the English Education Study Program at FKIP Universitas Islam Riau (UIR) towards the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in speaking classes. As PBL becomes an increasingly popular pedagogical method, understanding students' responses is crucial for optimizing its application. A descriptive research design was employed, using questionnaires and interviews to collect data. The study focused on three dimensions of attitude—cognitive, affective, and behavioral—and examined both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors. The findings reveal that students generally hold positive attitudes toward PBL. Cognitive attitude received the highest average score (78.77%), followed by affective (77.87%) and behavioral components (75.03%). Motivation levels were also high, with extrinsic motivation (79.40%) slightly exceeding intrinsic motivation (75.97%). These results indicate that PBL fosters both student engagement and motivation in speaking classes. The positive reception suggests that PBL effectively promotes self-regulated learning, collaboration, and practical language use. However, the study also identified challenges, particularly in time management and the need for continuous instructor support. Project-Based Learning is well-received among UIR English Education students and contributes positively to speaking skill development. Future research should include other institutions to enhance the generalizability of findings.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Project-Based Concern (PBC) to develop an English for Maritime coursebook (EMC) model for maritime aligned with Seafarers STSDD certification requirements. Following Gall et al (2007)s model design, the research aims to create an interactive teaching material model suitable for a foundational English course tailored for seafarers. Twenty-five Seafarers and two experts were identified through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, revealing ten thematic areas structured with twenty-seven subtopics. These thematic areas encompassed essential topics such as maritime communication, safety procedures, navigation, marine engineering, cargo operations, environmental awareness, cultural competence, legal aspects, health, and emergencies. Topics within these areas include theoretical knowledge, in-class exercises, and practical field assignments designed to enhance both individual and group learning experiences. These components were meticulously aligned with standards designed to enhance English language skills for maritime purposes among seafarers preparing for STSDD certification. The result of the EMC model, through PBC, tailored the guidelines to the unique contexts of maritime training. Effectiveness was assessed using the N-Gain Score, yielding a score of 0.86 (86.36%), indicating a significant improvement in language skills. The findings suggest that this PBC not only improves seafarers English for maritime language skills but also holds practical implications for onboard application. By incorporating PBC and specific materials, educators can optimize training programs to better equip seafarers for the linguistic demands of their roles and the requirements of STSDD certification exams.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Baitul Maal wat Tamwil (BMT) in empowering the community's economy, especially in areas with low levels of economic welfare. BMT as a sharia-based microfinance institution has two main functions: a social fund management institution (Baitul Maal) and a commercial financial institution (Baitul Tamwil). This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method on several BMTs in the research area. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The study results indicate that BMT has contributed to improving the community's standard of living through micro-business financing, entrepreneurship training, and management of social funds in the form of zakat, infaq, and sedekah. In addition, BMT also plays a role in strengthening the community's social capital by encouraging active participation in community-based economic activities. The obstacles BMT faces in economic empowerment include limited capital, lack of financial literacy in the community, and challenges in maintaining sharia principles amidst competition from conventional financial institutions.
