Abstract

Peripheral neuropathy is a peripheral nerve disorders involving sensory, motor, or mixed nerves. First-line therapies for peripheral neuropathy, such as analgesics and SSRIs, often yield suboptimal therapeutic responses, have side effects, and provide inadequate disease control. Therefore, there is a need for adjuvant therapy utilizing bioactive compounds from natural sources, one of which is marine algae. Marine algae contain various compounds that have the potential to serve as safe and effective alternative adjuvant therapies for peripheral neuropathy. The literature used was collected from the PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases with restrictions: publication years from 2015 to 2025 and in either Indonesian or English. The review indicated that several compounds found in marine algae, such as florotanins, terpenoids, polysaccharides, peptide proteins, essential amino acids, and omega-3 fatty acids, exhibited biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. These compounds showed potential as alternative adjuvant therapies for peripheral neuropathy. In conclusion, the compounds in marine algae demonstrated various biological activities, suggesting their potential for development as alternative adjuvant therapies for peripheral neuropathy. Further research is needed to test their safety and effectiveness before being applied in clinical practice.

Abstract

Cancer is currently a disease that is experiencing significant growth. This has resulted in the number of chemotherapy administrations reaching 9.8 million to 15 million people and increasing by 53%. One of the side effects that can be caused is peripheral nerve disorders called Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN). In connection with the increasing number of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and the severe impact on peripheral nerves due to chemotherapy, early detection is very important to prevent severe complications. This training aims to improve the knowledge and skills of medical personnel in the early detection of chemotherapy-induced neuropathy in order to improve the quality of life of patients and reduce complications and disabilities due to neuropathy. This training was carried out in collaboration with the West Nusa Tenggara Province General Hospital and was attended by 62 nurses. The series of training activities included delivering materials and direct practice to patients. Evaluation of participant knowledge was through a pre-test using the Kahoot application and a post-test using the Plataran Sehat application with a pre-test completion time of 5 minutes. The average pre-test score was 59.35, while the average post-test score was 79.35. The simulation sessions are conducted directly with patients using a neuropathy screening questionnaire, accompanied by a physician. The presentation of the material and the simulation sessions are highly beneficial in neuropathy screening, allowing early detection of neuropathy symptoms and prompt treatment.

Abstract

Acute ischemic stroke is an acute episode of neurological dysfunction caused by focal infarction or damage that persists for ≥24 hours in the brain, spine, and retinal. Stroke is the second highest cause of death worldwide. The total prevalence of stroke continues to increase in the world and in Indonesia. However, stroke treatment is still less effective, so adjuvant therapy needs to be developed; one of them is MLC901. However, this therapy still needs to be studied further regarding its effect on acute ischemic stroke and the biomarkers used as the prognostic factors, such as red cell distribution width (RDW). This paper aims to determine the effect of MLC901 therapy on RDW values in acute ischemic stroke by analyzing various previous studies from different databases as a reference. Increased RDW values are associated with poor outcomes of acute ischemic stroke. MLC901 was shown to have neuroprotective and neurorestorative abilities in neurons that are under stress due to ischemia. MLC901 also can reduce inflammatory responses, reduce oxidative stress, and increase erythropoietin (EPO) production. So, administration of adjuvant MLC901 therapy can reduce RDW values and improve neurological outcomes in acute ischemic stroke.

Abstract

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) is an autoimmune disease. The European Academy of Neurology recommends treatment using corticosteroids, immunoglobulin, plasma exchange, & other treatments as treatment options for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy. However, several studies in recent years have shown that there is potential in the treatment of chronic inflammatory demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy. The aim of this literature review is to provide the latest therapy for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy based on guidelines as well as other information therapy alternatives. The method used in this literature review uses searches in several databases. The results of several studies show the development of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy therapy both pharmacologically & non-pharmacologically. The development of therapy for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, namely hematopoietic stem cells & spinal cord stimulation, shows potential as a therapeutic option for patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy.

Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of disability and death, particularly among children and young adults, and can result in serious complications such as post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE). PTE develops after TBI and is characterized by recurrent seizures without external triggers, with the risk influenced by the location and severity of the injury. Therefore, the authors raise this topic to help improve diagnostic acuity and highlight the importance of laboratory modalities in diagnosing PTE. The literature search was conducted using Google Scholar with the keywords "Post-Traumatic Epilepsy, Biomarkers, Management, Diagnosis." Based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 17 publications were identified as suitable for our literature review. Diagnostic tools such as CT scans, MRIs, and EEGs are essential for assessing risk. Although antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) can reduce early seizures, they are not effective for the long-term prevention of PTE. Long-term approaches, including lamotrigine, carbamazepine, and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), may be beneficial, but further research is needed to optimize treatment.

Abstract

Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country in the world, with extensive coastal and oceanic areas and a high diversity of marine biodiversity. The coastal regions of Indonesia serve as habitats for various types of marine animals that possess both beauty and potential dangers, particularly from marine animal stings. In addition to marine animal stings, decompression sickness also poses a serious emergency in the maritime context. The purpose of this article is to provide new insights into the importance of understanding and recognizing decompression syndrome, as well as the bites and stings caused by marine animals, as early indicators of emergencies in the maritime field. This understanding can enhance early detection, appropriate treatment, and awareness of complications arising from maritime emergencies. The article will focus on marine animals such as the blue-ringed octopus, sea urchins, pufferfish, lionfish, jellyfish, stingrays, and stonefish, which are associated with emergencies in the maritime field. Data sources were gathered through electronic searches on library databases including Google Scholar, ProQuest, MDPI, and PubMed to find articles discussing "emergencies in the maritime field.".
