Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to expose al-Kindi's theory of creation and his repudiation of Aristotle's equivalent theory. The theory of creation was one of the philosophical problems that originated in the Greco-Aristotle philosophy. In this tradition, "creation" refers to making or changing something from something else. In other words, this universe was created from pre-existing matters, materials, and substratum. This viewpoint ran counter to Muslim beliefs, including al-Kindi. For al-Kindi, creation entails creating something from nothing. This universe did not exist before. God's qudrah determined its existence, and His iradah created it from nothing. To defend his position, al-Kindi used both philosophical and theological arguments. Like mutakallimun, al-Kindi's theological argument is built on the Qur'anic term "kun,” while his philosophical argument is based on the argument of limitations. This study is literature-based research using a descriptive critical analytical method. The data for this study were obtained from books, articles, and other written documents. The collected data is examined utilizing the critical analytical method. This research concludes that al-Kindi explained the concept of creation quite clearly, and succeeded in making an appropriate and directed critical response to Aristotle's theory of creation. Likewise, al-Kindi's idea of creation demonstrates his close position with theologians and separates himself from the Peripatetic philosophers after him, even though al-Kindi is famous as a Muslim philosopher.

Abstract

Humans have an essential role and function as caliphs on this earth. However, the figure of the caliph as a leader has begun to decline. This is due to the lack of knowledge about a caliph’s nature and the obligations that must be carried out. This library research will explore the concept of caliphs in the plural and singular forms found in the Qur'an based on an analysis of thematic interpretation studies and its relevance as a leader in Islam. The results of this study state that the meaning of the khalifah in the Qur'an can be clarified into three, namely: the meaning of the khalifah as a general leader for all human beings, the meaning of the khalifah as a leader that is specific or addressed to a nation or generations, and the meaning of the caliph which is individual, namely to the Prophet David. In addition, this paper can also provide insight into the values or principles of the Shari'a contained in the meaning of caliph so that it can be a reference and is expected to be a motivation to produce a leader who understands the concept of khalifah and can implement his rights and obligations.

Abstract

Abstract                                             Wahdatul Wujud philosophy is said to have implications for Jabariyah understanding which resulted in the negation of the syari'at. This is because Wahdatul Wujud is understood to be the same as Pantheism. So this research aims to know the implications of Ibn 'Arabi's thought, known as Wahdatul Wujud, on Af'alul' Ibad discourse. This research is descriptive qualitative research using a literature study approach, the researcher will conduct a study of Ibn 'Arabi's works and some related literature. The conclusion of this study, when viewed from the concept of Wahdatul Wujud as believed by Ibn Arabi and his followers, shows that Ibn Arabi believes in the theory of kasb as believed by Imam Al-Ash'ari, that humans have a will to produce actions. However, the human will does not affect the actions. Because only Allah has the power to perform actions. This is consistent with the philosophy of Wahdatul Wujud, that there is no Being except Allah, meaning that there is no action in this world except the act of Allah. Human will and effort belong to man, but only Allah can make it happen. Based on this explanation, it can be concluded that Wahdatul Wujud does not affirm the Jabariyyah concept, which can result in the negation of the Shari'ah. Keywords: Ibn ‘Arabi, Wahdatul Wujud, human action, Allah knowledge.

Abstract

Kitâb al-Luma' fî al-Taṣawwuf of al-Sarrâj (d. 378H./988CE.) is the earliest work in Sufism survived and arrived at us. It did not only record the history of Sufism up to that time but also promoted and placed its position among other disciplines in the history of intellectual and spiritual traditions of Islam. With this work, al-Sarrâj formulated Sufi epistemology in its earliest development. This paper attempts to explore the Sufi epistemology of al-Sarrâj, which will cover the discussion about his classification and hierarchy of knowledge, his analysis of the position of Sufism among other knowledge, and then his elaboration of the methodology of Sufism. Before ending the discussion, the paper will read the works of Indonesian Sufis using Sufi epistemology as a perspective. This study finds that al-Sarrâj was successfully constructed Sufi epistemology in its initial emergence. He placed Sufism as a discipline of knowledge and posed it at the highest level in the structural hierarchy of knowledge. Reading the works of Indonesian Sufis from Sufi epistemology, it appears that in the early days of their birth, these works were colored by the epistemology of philosophical Sufism. It was only later that the epistemology of Sunni Sufism came into existence, and this became more evident in the following periods in the development of Sufism in this country.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the epistemological construct of Sufism according to Sa’id Nursi in the contemporary era. Sufism is seen as having deviant concepts and practices contrary to Shari’a in the modern era. Some muslim and non-muslim thinkers argue that Sufism does not originate from Islam. Therefore, there needs to be an effort to decipher this misunderstanding by exposing how Sufism's epistemology was genuinely constructed by referring to the teachings and practices of a contemporary Sufi, Sa'id Nursi. This study is qualitative library research. Data in this study, both primary and secondary, were collected using documentary techniques. The collected data were analyzed utilizing the content analysis method. This work finds that Nursi outlines four pillars of Sufism epistemology. First, true Sufism is based on the Qur'an and Sunnah, internalized and manifested through the soul and heart, as is the view of the authoritative Sufis. Second, purification of the teachings and practices of Sufism must depart from the purgation of the heart and soul. Third, social equality refers to carrying out life’s values, meaning that all are equal before Allah SWT. Fourth, consistently instill the Qur’an’s four values: tauhid (unity and oneness of God), nubuwah (prophecy), hashr (resurrection), and 'adl (justice).

Abstract

This study will analyze the use of the 'al-Isyārah' and 'al-Ibārah' diction in the perspective of Sufi expressions of Ibn Athāillah as-Sakandary, as well as analyze the influence of the language on the technical terms in the discipline of Sufism. Ulama have criticized the technical term used by Sufis in their books from other fields because Sufis use technical terms that are rarely used and seem strange. Sufis prefer a cryptic language called 'isyārah,' but in some cases, they also use an explicit language commonly called al-Ibārah.' Ibn Athāillah (d. 709 h) has an interesting description of this topic and places it proportionally. Both ‘isyārah’ and ‘ibārah’ are a form of a method for expressing intuitive knowledge about the secrets of God. ' al-Ibārah' can be used if a Sufi does have specific capabilities. Also, it can be used as a form of education for the sālik. Apart from these two things, a Sufi can express it with 'al-Isyārah' and 'rumziyyah' or choose to store it as personal knowledge. The way this disclosure impacts the technical terms used. Sufis choose metaphorical or technical expressions that differ from philosophical, kalam, or tasawuf traditions. Thus, despite using such words, their technical time does not come out of the scientific standard.
