Abstract

This study investigates Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī's sufi philosophy of illumination and explores its potential contribution to contemporary environmental consciousness. The increasingly urgent global ecological crisis has sparked interdisciplinary debate about root causes and comprehensive solutions. Several contemporary thinkers argue that the ecological crisis is a manifestation of a more fundamental ontological crisis, namely the loss of humans' harmonious relationship with nature. In this context, Islamic philosophy, especially the school of illumination (ishrāq) developed by Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī, offers a unique perspective that can enrich environmental discourse. The research aims to integrate Suhrawardī’s ontological and epistemological concepts with contemporary ecological principles to offer a novel perspective on human-nature relationships. A descriptive-analytical approach is employed to analyze Suhrawardī’s philosophical texts and correlate them with modern ecological theories. The study reveals that Suhrawardī’s concept of asala al-mahiya (essential reality) and his illuminationist epistemology, which views all beings as emanations of divine light, challenge the anthropocentric worldview. This perspective promotes two fundamental ecological principles: biospherical illuminative egalitarianism and illuminative equilibrium. These principles emphasize social justice and environmental balance, recognizing humans as integral parts of nature with responsibility for its preservation. By shifting the human-nature relationship from a subject-object dichotomy to an inter-subject interaction, Suhrawardī’s philosophy can enhance awareness of environmental issues and inspire more sustainable practices. Integrating spiritual wisdom and ecological consciousness offers a holistic approach to addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

Abstract

Community service activities through ribbon embroidery art training aim to increase creativity and soft skills, especially among members of the Indonesian Student Association (PPI) in Sakarya, Turkey. This training was carried out as part of the Real Work Lecture (KKN) program at Darussalam Gontor University to empower the community through developing practical skills. The art of ribbon embroidery, which has been known since the 17th century, was chosen as training material because of its creative and applicable nature. The training method involves lectures for basic introduction and hands-on practice to support participants' technical skills. This activity focuses on making simple motifs that are applied to media such as headscarves, thereby providing direct and relevant benefits for participants. The results of the activity showed that ribbon embroidery training was able to increase participants' understanding and skills in the field of handicraft arts. Apart from that, this training also motivates participants to continue to develop their creativity and skills in supporting PPI's women's activities. Thus, this program has a positive impact on community empowerment and strengthening soft skills, while preserving traditional arts that have high cultural value.

Abstract

This research seeks to explore the relationship between Sufism and Fiqh from the perspective of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani and its relevance to dealing with various problems and challenges modern human life faces. The problem of spiritual and social crises facing modern humans today arises due to the development of science and technology in the era of globalization, which affects all of their patterns of thinking, acting, and decision-making. This study is qualitative library research. The primary data refers to the work of Shaikh Nawawi al-Bantani, which directly discusses the issues in this work, namely the book Maraqi al-'Ubudiyah and Salalim al-Fudlala'. At the same time, secondary data were taken from various other works of his or the work of other writers and intellectuals. Data was collected using documentary techniques, and the data collected were analyzed utilizing descriptive analysis methods. This study found that Islam consists of three central doctrines: Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. These three doctrines are closely related to the relationship between Sufism and Fiqh, the core of Islamic teachings. If properly understood and realized, the relationship between these two disciplines can play an essential role in helping modern humans overcome the various problems and challenges they face in the spiritual and social crises they experience.

Abstract

Secularism assumes that scientific progress can only be built by separating it from religion, because the basis of truth for the two is different. The truth of religion is spiritual-transcendental, while the truth of science is rational-empirical. The impact of the development of science based on secularism will be the focus of the study in this paper. This research is a literature review with a qualitative approach. The data were obtained using documentary techniques and the collected data were analyzed by descriptive-critical-analytical methods. This study concludes that secularization is a natural emptying of religious values and teachings. The worst impact of this ideology is that the development of science in the future will only occur and is limited in the empirical dimension. This research proves that in reality, science is beyond the realm of pure empirical and experimental. Existence has unobservable and non-empirical elements that are real and true. This perspective will increase the significance of scientific discoveries that are not limited to the empirical world alone and at the same time make scientific research will have a more meaningful impact on human life as a whole.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of ‘aqidah education in Nisa’iyah subjects for cultivating akhlaq karimah (noble character) at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor Putri Campus 1. Employing a qualitative case study approach, it investigates how ‘aqidah values are integrated into Nisa’iyah subjects, which include women's fiqh, women's psychology, women's health, and women's skills. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that this integrative approach significantly contributes to shaping akhlaq karimah among female students, aligning with Pondok's educational objectives and contemporary societal needs. Key factors influencing this process include student motivation, socio-cultural background, and the Pondok's educational environment. The integration of ‘aqidah education is carried out through cognitive understanding, affective appreciation, and psychomotor practice, fostering a holistic development of students' character. The study underscores the pivotal role of Islamic education in nurturing Muslim women with noble character, preparing them to face modern challenges. Additionally, it highlights the necessity of continuous curriculum evaluation in response to evolving social and technological contexts. This research contributes to the discourse on Islamic education by offering a model for integrating ‘aqidah and akhlaq in a comprehensive manner. It emphasizes the importance of a balanced educational approach that addresses intellectual, emotional, and practical dimensions, ensuring that students develop into individuals with strong moral character, social responsibility, and adaptive skills required to navigate contemporary societal shifts.

Abstract

Western epistemology encounters significant challenges due to its secular and materialistic orientation, which restricts the sources of knowledge to sensory perception and empirical experimentation. This study analyzes Muhammad Arsyad al-Banjari’s concept of ma‘rifah as an epistemological alternative to these dilemmas. Adopting a qualitative, library-based method, the research applies Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s analytical model, framed within an integration of Islamic epistemological principles and comparative philosophical analysis. The primary source is Kanz al-Ma‘rifah by al-Banjari, supported by cross-referenced verification. The findings indicate that, according to al-Banjari, ma‘rifah is attainable through three key paths: Nūr Muhammad, mutu qabla an tamūtu, and fanā’. This concept provides an epistemological paradigm that integrates physical and metaphysical dimensions of knowledge, reconciles rational and intuitive methodologies, and transcends the subject-object dichotomy through spiritual experience. Through the ‘irfānī method focusing on purification of the heart and spiritual discipline, ma‘rifah offers a comprehensive epistemology that refines rational and sensory faculties, thereby presenting a critical alternative to the empiricism that dominates Western epistemology.

Abstract

This article explores the concept of authority and its relationship with religion, addressing various aspects and theories related to both. This concept is significant as it touches on essential elements of society. In faciliting the research process, the researcher employs a descriptive and analytical method with a philosophical basis. As a result, the study finds a connection between authority in al-Ghazali's view and other concepts, such as justice, which ultimately leads to happiness. Authority is necessary in social life as a means to achieve happiness for both individuals and society. This reflects what can be described as the ideal society concept in al-Ghazali's perspective. Al-Ghazālī proposes that an ideal society is a blend of worldly reality and spirituality, where power must be exercised according to religious teachings by leaders who embody magnanimity, in order to achieve happiness and justice within the community.

Abstract

Abstract

Amid the pressure-filled flow of modernity, Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani's concept of zuhd offers a new perspective on achieving psychological well-being. This study explores the intersection between the teachings of Zuhd al-Bantani and the six dimensions of psychological well-being developed by Ryff. Through qualitative analysis based on the literature study, a positive correlation was found between the concept of zuhd a l-Bantani and increased psychological well-being. The three main components of zuhd - perception of divine support, orientation to the afterlife, and total acceptance of life experiences - play a significant role in building self-acceptance, environmental mastery, and personal growth. Zuhd also encourages forming positive relationships with others and provides a clear purpose in life. This study suggests that the implementation of zuhd can be an effective strategy in dealing with contemporary psychological challenges, offering a balance between spirituality and mental health. These findings pave the way for further integration between classical Sufism teachings and modern psychological approaches, providing a holistic alternative to improve quality of life amidst the complexities of the contemporary world. This study's implications could revolutionise the approach to psychological well-being by integrating classical spiritual wisdom into contemporary mental health practices.
