Abstract

This study examines the complex interplay between formal legal structures, customary practices, and rapid urban development in shaping land ownership dynamics in Batam's old villages (kampung tua). Through a qualitative case study approach, incorporating document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and field observations, we investigate the challenges in reconciling traditional land rights with modern property laws in the context of Batam's development as a free trade zone. Our findings reveal that approximately 70% of land parcels in the studied villages lack formal titles, highlighting the prevalence of informal ownership systems. The research identifies significant legal pluralism, where national land laws, local regulations, and customary (adat) practices coexist and often conflict. Notaries emerge as key actors navigating this complex landscape, often expanding beyond their formal mandate to mediate between different systems of authority and ownership. The study underscores the limitations of current legal frameworks in addressing the unique challenges of land administration in rapidly urbanizing areas with strong customary traditions. We propose the need for more adaptive land governance approaches that can accommodate both formal and informal ownership structures, including specialized legal frameworks for recognizing customary land rights in urban contexts. This research contributes to the broader understanding of land rights issues in the face of rapid urban development and offers insights for policymakers, legal practitioners, and urban planners grappling with similar challenges in other developing regions.

Abstract

Female workers in the manufacturing sector in Batam City often face challenges in financial planning, particularly regarding pension funds. Lack of knowledge and information about the importance of pension funds, coupled with limited awareness campaigns, result in many workers not participating in pension programs. Additionally, a work culture focused on short-term targets often leads female workers in this sector to view long-term financial planning, such as retirement, as less important. This study aims to investigate and analyze the partial and simultaneous effects of framing effect, mental accounting, and financial decisions on the effectiveness of pension funds among female workers in manufacturing companies in Batam City. This study employs causal associative research, and the research method used is quantitative. The population in this study consists of all female workers in manufacturing companies in Batam City, whose exact number is unknown. Four manufacturing companies were randomly selected, and 50 respondents were selected from each company. The sampling method used non-probability sampling with purposive sampling techniques, with several criteria including women aged 40-50 years with a minimum of 1 year of work experience and companies employing more than 250 workers. The sample size for this study was 200 respondents. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. The results of the study indicate that the framing effect partially influences the effectiveness of pension funds, mental accounting partially influences the effectiveness of pension funds, financial decisions partially influence the effectiveness of pension funds, and the framing effect, mental accounting, and financial decisions simultaneously influence the effectiveness of pension funds. The adjusted R-squared value of 0.728 can be referred to as the coefficient of determination, This means that 0.741 (74.1%) of the effectiveness of pension funds can be obtained and explained by the framing effect, mental accounting, and financial decisions, while the remaining 25.3% (100% - 74.1% = 25.3%) is explained by variables outside the model that were not studied.

Abstract

This Real Work Lecture (KKN) activity was carried out in Kampung Tua Teluk Mata Ikan, Batam, with the aim of making a real contribution to the community through two main programs, namely the development of digital marketing for Ujung Beach tourist destinations and the implementation of social service activities at the Al-Kahfi Foundation. The problems faced by partners are the lack of digital promotion strategies for tourism potential and the limited support of adequate social facilities at the foundation. To overcome these problems, this service activity uses field observation methods, digital marketing training, mutual cooperation on environmental cleanliness, and socialization to the community and foundation administrators. The training includes social media content creation, digital account management, and internet-based marketing strategies to increase the attractiveness of Ujung Beach as a local tourist destination. In addition, social activities are carried out through joint community service, provision of basic needs assistance, and clean environment education. The results of the implementation of this program show an increase in public awareness of the importance of using digital technology for tourism promotion, as well as the creation of a cleaner, neater, and more comfortable social environment. The enthusiasm of the community and the foundation showed a positive response to this activity, which contributed to strengthening the socio-economic capacity of the residents. Overall, this KKN program not only provides a short-term impact in the form of improving skills and environmental cleanliness, but also encourages the sustainability of local tourism development and community empowerment. The active involvement of students in the planning and evaluation process also strengthens the spirit of collaboration and social concern which is the main basis of this service activity.

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates how Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) influences Generation Z investment behavior and emotional bias in financial decision-making processes. The research employed an interpretive phenomenological approach with in-depth semi-structured interviews conducted among Generation Z investors in Indonesia to understand the psychological mechanisms underlying FOMO-driven investment decisions. Systematic thematic analysis revealed three primary themes: FOMO as an emotional investment driver, social media influence creating information asymmetry, and financial literacy functioning as a complex moderating factor. The findings demonstrate that FOMO operates as a powerful emotional compulsion that systematically overrides rational decision-making processes, with social media exposure to peers' investment success serving as the most potent trigger for impulsive investment behavior. A significant "information paradox" emerged where participants heavily rely on low-credibility sources such as financial influencers while underutilizing high-credibility alternatives like official company reports, prioritizing accessibility over accuracy. The relationship between financial literacy and FOMO vulnerability proved non-linear, with medium literacy levels paradoxically increasing overconfidence bias while high literacy enabled sophisticated rationalization of emotional decisions. These findings contribute to behavioral finance theory by revealing how digital-social contexts amplify emotional biases beyond traditional market psychology models, suggesting that conventional financial education approaches may be insufficient for addressing emotionally-driven decision-making among digital-native generations.

Abstract

Healthcare workforce shortages in hinterland areas represent a critical global health challenge, particularly affecting remote communities that struggle to attract and retain qualified healthcare professionals. This cross-sectional study analyzed the influence of organizational support and health infrastructure on healthcare staff retention among 182 healthcare workers in hinterland communities of Riau Islands, Indonesia, using Structural Equation Modeling with Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The measurement model demonstrated excellent reliability and validity with Cronbach's Alpha values ranging from 0.924-0.947 and Average Variance Extracted above 0.5 for all constructs. Results revealed that health infrastructure had the strongest direct positive effect on staff retention, followed by organizational support, while health infrastructure also significantly influenced organizational support, creating a mediation pathway. The indirect effect analysis confirmed that organizational support partially mediates the relationship between health infrastructure and staff retention, with all hypothesized relationships being statistically significant and the model explaining substantial variance in retention outcomes. These findings suggest that healthcare organizations in hinterland areas should adopt integrated strategies that simultaneously invest in infrastructure improvements and strengthen organizational support systems to achieve optimal staff retention outcomes in challenging remote environments.
