Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the mathematical problem-solving ability and characters of students who were taught using problem-based learning and ordinary learning based on Islamic perspectives. The instrument used in this study was a test of problem-solving ability and a students’ character questionnaire. This research was a quasi-experimental research with pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample of this research was 84 students from Private Islamic School in Medan, North Sumatera, by using a purposive sampling technique. The data in this research was declared homogenous and normal after being tested using the Levene’s Test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test. The hypothesis analyzes used was the Two Way-ANOVA test assisted by SPSS 25. The result showed that there was an improvement in mathematical problem-solving ability and students' characters through problem-based learning based on Islamic perspectives. However, there was no interaction between students' gender and problem-solving ability and character improvement based on Islamic perspectives. The gender factor in problem-based learning was not related to students’ cognitive and affective aspects. Each student with any gender had difference characters, especially related to Islamic perspectives. This research-proven that problem-based learning model had an important role in teaching and learning, and it can be used to improve students' mathematical and character problem-solving ability.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the increase of students' creative thinking, which taught using problem-based learning with local culture (PBL-Local Culture). In this study also saw the interaction between students' gender and students' prior mathematics ability. This type of research is quasi-experiment research, using pre-test post-test control group design. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25 through Two-Way ANOVA. The result shows that increasing the creative thinking abilities of students taught using problem-based learning with local culture is significantly higher than the creative thinking abilities of students taught using classical learning. Based on the result, we found that the use of problem-based learning local culture (PBL-Local Culture) offered the opportunity to give student new experience to solving real problems in their daily life, primarily related in their local culture. Students can describe how to solve the daily life problem with mathematically modelling. This learning model has given the facility to students at the end to improve their creative thinking ability. Students make the new model of problem-solving and finally they can solve that problem with their model. This study also found that the factor of students' gender and students' prior mathematics ability has not given the effect of students' creative thinking ability. It means that there is no gap in gender and the contribution of students' prior mathematics ability in students' academic skills. Based on this study, we recommendation of this model to using in other subjects in the learning class and to improving other learning ability, not limited in creative thinking ability.

Abstract

Background: A rare genetic disorder characterized by the development of multiple benign bone tumors called osteochondromas. This condition is primarily hereditary and follows an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance, with mutations in the EXT1 and EXT2 genes being the most common genetic. Case report: This case report describes an 12-year-old boy with lumps in all four extremities accompanied by intermittent pain. Femur x-rays concluded MHE of the femur, tibia, and bilateral fibula. Histopathological examination shows that the cartilage tissue contains chondrocyte cells that form the cartilage cap. There is a transition of cartilage to bone trabeculae through endochondral ossification and bone marrow between the bone trabeculae. Discussion and Conclusion: MHE is a rare condition, with an incidence of approximately 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 live births. MHE is closely related to genetic mutations that occur in the EXT1, EXT2, and EXT3 genes. These genes code for enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of heparan sulfate, which is necessary for normal bone growth. Mutations in any of these genes disrupt the regulation of bone growth and lead to osteochondroma formation. Symptoms of MHE can range from mild to severe, and they tend to appear in childhood or adolescence. The main clinical manifestations include the formation of a hard lump on the bone, which can cause deformity, pain, and limitation of movement. Osteochondroma can also compress nerves or blood vessels, causing complications such as circulatory disorders or paralysis. We report a rare case emphasizing the typical morphology of multiple hereditary exostosis of the long bones to establish the final diagnosis without immunohistochemistry and molecular examination. In low-resource settings where molecular analysis is not available, histopathological examination are key tools to establish a correct diagnosis.
