Abstract

In the 21st century, understanding variability and developing statistical investigation skills are crucial for enhancing students' data literacy. However, these essential skills are often overlooked, limiting students' growth in numeracy whereby statistical problems are frequently disconnected from real-world or cultural contexts, reducing student engagement. To address this issue, this study integrates the culturally relevant context of Lemang Batok, which enhances students' ability to understand, apply, and analyze data through appropriate statistical concepts. The research uses an ethno-flipped classroom model that promotes flexible, collaborative learning, aiming to design a learning trajectory for teaching descriptive statistics in this context to improve numeracy skills. Utilizing design research methodology, specifically a validation study, the research followed three phases: preliminary design, experimental design, and retrospective analysis. The subjects were junior high school students from Medan and Binjai Cities, North Sumatera-Indonesia. The results indicated that the learning trajectory developed through tiered discussions significantly improved students' numeracy skills in descriptive statistics, as evidenced by increased critical thinking and enhanced abilities to analyze variability.

Abstract

Indonesia, particularly the Java region, is home to a wealth of folklore rich in moral teachings. Among these, the story of Rama and Sinta is one of the most prominent, and upon initial investigation, it reveals an underlying presence of mathematical concepts, particularly relations and functions. Despite this potential, there is a lack of research on integrating such cultural elements into the teaching of mathematics. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the use of the Rama and Sinta narrative as a contextual tool for teaching relations and functions. Following the design research method within the Ethno-Realistic Mathematics Education (Ethno-RME) framework, we developed instructional materials for seventh-grade students at a public school in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. These materials, consisting of both student and teacher books, were designed to contextualize the mathematical concepts of relations and functions within the cultural narrative. The resulting learning trajectory, consisting of five interconnected activities, not only deepened students' understanding of the mathematical concepts but also reinforced the moral lessons embedded in the folklore. This paper details the development process, implementation, and outcomes of this culturally responsive approach, contributing valuable insights into the integration of local cultural narratives with core mathematical concepts to enhance the learning experience.

Abstract

Schwannoma is a benign soft tissue tumor of the nerve sheath, composed of neoplastic cells with Schwann cell differentiation. It predominantly arises from peripheral nerves in the head, neck, and extremities, with a peak incidence in the fourth to sixth decades. Schwannoma is typically a solitary and sporadic lesion, affecting individuals of all ages, with an incidence rate of 4.4-5.23 cases per 100,000 people. The prevalence is around 7% of all primary nervous system tumors, often occurring in the head and neck (20-50%) and affecting cranial nerves such as N. Vagus and N. Sympathetic. This case report involves a 50-year-old female patient presenting with a right neck lump that had been present for 23 years, initially small but growing rapidly in the last 10 years with occasional pain. Initial imaging suggested a thyroid complex cyst, but further investigation, including a CT scan and intraoperative frozen section examination, raised suspicion for a malignant thyroid tumor. However, histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of Schwannoma, distinguishing it from other potential malignant lesions, such as Anaplastic Thyroid Carcinoma (ATC). This case highlights the importance of intraoperative cytology and frozen section techniques for diagnosing Schwannoma. Although Schwannomas share morphological similarities with other tumors, particularly in the thyroid region, a multidisciplinary approach combining clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings is essential for an accurate diagnosis. This case also underscores the need for careful differential diagnosis in nerve sheath tumors located in the neck.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the increase of students' creative thinking, which taught using problem-based learning with local culture (PBL-Local Culture). In this study also saw the interaction between students' gender and students' prior mathematics ability. This type of research is quasi-experiment research, using pre-test post-test control group design. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25 through Two-Way ANOVA. The result shows that increasing the creative thinking abilities of students taught using problem-based learning with local culture is significantly higher than the creative thinking abilities of students taught using classical learning. Based on the result, we found that the use of problem-based learning local culture (PBL-Local Culture) offered the opportunity to give student new experience to solving real problems in their daily life, primarily related in their local culture. Students can describe how to solve the daily life problem with mathematically modelling. This learning model has given the facility to students at the end to improve their creative thinking ability. Students make the new model of problem-solving and finally they can solve that problem with their model. This study also found that the factor of students' gender and students' prior mathematics ability has not given the effect of students' creative thinking ability. It means that there is no gap in gender and the contribution of students' prior mathematics ability in students' academic skills. Based on this study, we recommendation of this model to using in other subjects in the learning class and to improving other learning ability, not limited in creative thinking ability.
