Abstract

This paper focuses on a contextual hermeneutical analysis of John 4:7–15 in relation to the theology of migration in Indonesia. Migration as a social phenomenon is a complex reality caused by various factors, such as economics, natural disasters, and developments in transportation and information technology that enable large-scale human mobility. In the Indonesian context, this phenomenon has been going on for a long time and continues to have significant social, cultural, and theological impacts. Through a contextual hermeneutical approach, this study seeks to explore the theological meaning of the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman as a model for understanding contemporary theology of migration. The text of John 4:7–15 is understood as an event that transcends social, cultural, and identity boundaries. Jesus' dialogue with the Samaritan woman demonstrates an effort to break down discriminatory barriers between different groups and affirms the universal nature of love and salvation offered by Christ. In the context of the theology of migration in Indonesia, this passage reflects the values of hospitality and inclusivity that form the basis for forming a community open to differences. Hospitality is understood not only as an attitude of welcoming the presence of strangers, but also as a reflection of God's love that erases the boundaries between "us" and "them." Meanwhile, inclusivity emphasizes the importance of social and spiritual integration that values diversity as part of unity in Christ. This study demonstrates that the church in Indonesia needs to emulate Jesus' attitude in building relationships across identities and fostering solidarity with migrants who often experience discrimination. Through contextual hermeneutics, the text of John 4:7-15 is read not only as a historical narrative but also as a theological call to present God's love amidst the realities of modern migration. This study confirms that a biblically based theology of migration can offer a new paradigm that encourages the church to become a space of hospitality and reconciliation for all people regardless of social, ethnic, or cultural background.

Abstract

This community-based outreach program was conducted to improve Grade XI students’ awareness, skills, and motivation in preparing for the TOEFL Listening section at SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar. As English language proficiency becomes an increasingly essential requirement for global education and career advancement, early exposure to international standardized tests such as TOEFL is critical. The program introduced students to the structure and function of the TOEFL, including its different types (iBT, ITP, and Prediction) and the specific challenges of the Listening section. Students were trained to use effective strategies such as focusing on the final line in dialogues, identifying synonymous phrases in questions and answers, and avoiding traps based on similar sounds. The implementation included interactive presentations, real-time simulations using Google Forms, and guided listening activities with authentic audio. Students participated actively and demonstrated improved engagement, comprehension, and test readiness. The feedback phase indicated that students gained a clearer understanding of TOEFL Listening tasks and increased confidence in approaching listening-based questions. The combination of strategy-based instruction, digital simulations, and supportive discussion helped students overcome initial anxiety and performance gaps. As a result, this outreach initiative successfully equipped students with practical listening tools, increased their motivation to practice independently, and laid the foundation for future TOEFL preparation. It is recommended that similar programs be extended to other schools to support students’ readiness for international English proficiency testing.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the Direct Instruction (DI) model as a learning method in improving students' abilities in the Choral Arrangement course in the digital era. This study aims to emphasize the importance of implementing the DI model in the context of modern learning that is rich in technology integration, especially in Semester 6 of the Music Arts Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Arts, HKBP Nommensen University, Academic Year 2024/2025. The method applied is descriptive qualitative with a case study approach. Data were obtained through observations of the learning process, interviews with students, and documentation of the results of arrangement assignments. The results of the analysis show that the DI model, with a structured and planned teaching approach, can improve students' conceptual understanding, technical skills, and creativity in creating choral arrangements. The use of digital technology such as music notation applications and online learning media also increases the effectiveness of this model. In addition, students showed a good response to the clarity of instructions, measurable learning steps, and increased motivation to learn. This study states that Direct Instruction is relevant and can be adapted to learning needs in the digital era, especially in the context of practice-based courses such as Choral Arrangement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the policies of the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP) Church regarding congregational singing practices during Sunday worship and to evaluate their implementation in order to identify an ideal model for improving the quality of congregational singing techniques. The primary issue addressed in this research is the prevalence of technical errors in congregational singing, such as inaccurate rhythm, poor intonation, unclear articulation, and uncontrolled vocal dynamics. These errors tend to occur repeatedly and systematically, which is suspected to be the result of oral tradition transmission without structured musical training. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method using a case study approach conducted in three HKBP church regions in North Sumatra: Tarutung, Pematangsiantar, and Medan. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that although the HKBP possesses a rich legacy of church music, the implementation of policies related to congregational singing training remains uneven and lacks structure. Vocal technique training has not yet become an integral part of church programs, and congregational singing ability is largely shaped by worship habits without adequate pedagogical intervention. Oral tradition plays a significant role but is not sufficiently supported by formal musical approaches. Based on these findings, this study proposes an ideal model for developing congregational singing techniques that incorporates theological, musical, and inculturative aspects—taking into account the characteristics of Batak music and Christian spiritual values. This research is expected to make a meaningful contribution to enhancing the quality of worship in the HKBP context, particularly in the area of congregational singing as an expression of faith and a vital element of liturgy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to inform SMK GKPI 1 Pematangsiantar's class XII students about the TOEFL and its advantages. This research was conducted at SMK GKPI 1 Pematangsiantar involving 35 class XII TJTL students. This socializing action took place on January 10, 2024. It was delivered via lecture and question and answer format. This is a presentation of TOEFL content and its educational advantages. Three sessions were used to implement this socialization: a pre-test questionnaire about the TOEFL test, an explanation of the socialization material about the test, and a discussion session with a post-test to gauge the students' comprehension of the material. The socialization activity's outcomes demonstrate that the students who participated in the first socialization were unaware of and unaccustomed to the TOEFL. But as they were more socialized and learned more about the TOEFL, their comprehension grew and they became quite excited. When comparing the post-test results to the pre-test, it was evident that student scores had increased significantly by up to 30%. The findings indicated that the TOEFL is still not well understood by the students at SMK GKPI 1 Pematangsiantar. Nevertheless, following the socialist's explanation of the TOEFL introduction, the implementation team administered a post-test to gauge students' comprehension. According to the computational results, the post-test average was 62.8%. This unequivocally demonstrates that their comprehension improved following exposure to the TOEFL introduction

Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the diversity of musical genres is a multidimensional phenomenon in the realm of musical arts that reflects the systematic heterogeneity of musical styles, forms, and practices that develop in various cultural, historical, and social contexts. In a theoretical-musical perspective, this diversity is reflected through the differentiation of basic elements of music: such as melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, texture, form, and dynamics that form the idiomatic characteristics of each genre. This study aims to examine the diversity of HKBP church music genres used in performing songs in Sunday services, to examine the choice of musical genres used in church services in HKBP and to examine church policies towards HKBP church music. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological approach, supported by observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The theories used include the Theory of Music Diversity, the Theory of Cultural Contact and the Theory of Music Management. The results of the study show that the diversity of musical genres has undergone significant changes in the musical structure of each HKBP church, the use of modern instruments, but still maintains traditional elements such as hymn music (organ). The new music style (genre) that was formed was the result of Cultural Contact of HKBP church musicians with the demands of the times, the tastes of musicians or congregations and contemporary performance spaces. The music policy in each HKBP church is different because the musicians in each church are not trained and practices in the field are different, the leadership of the Pastor in the church does not all understand HKBP church music. For musicians accompanying Sunday services in HKBP churches, knowing the many music genres is due to the freedom to appreciate playing music because there is no written HKBP music policy but the policy exists through Oral Tradition. This study contributes to the development of HKBP church music policies that are adaptive to cultural and generational contexts, while preserving the roots of Lutheran liturgical tradition.
