Abstract

This article is about English pronunciation based on the phonetics transcription Application (Study of tophonetics app). The aim of the article is focused to know English pronunciation based on the phonetics transcription by using tophonetics Application. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method. The samples of this research are ten students, to look for the phonetics transcription by using tophonetics tools and to read the text of phonetics transcription. The writer used the interview as an instrument on this research was to collect the data. The result of this research that the pronunciation of phonetics transcription in English used tophonetics.app the students could be doing easy and understanding to use the app and could improve pronouncing the words better.Keywords: transcription, tophonetics, pronunciation, application, understanding ABSTRAK Penelitian ini untuk mengetahui bagaimana pelafalan bahasa Inggris berdasarkan transkripsi fonetik dengan menggunakan Aplikasi tophonetics. Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sampel penelitian ini adalah sepuluh siswa, untuk mencari transkripsi fonetik dengan menggunakan alat tophonetics dan membaca teks transkripsi fonetik. Penulis menggunakan wawancara sebagai instrumen dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk mengumpulkan data. Temuan dari penelitian ini adalah para mahasiswa mencari transkripsi fonetik dengan menggunakan aplikasi tophonetics ini. Hasil penelitian ini bahwa pelafalan transkripsi fonetik dalam bahasa Inggris menggunakan tophonetics. App, para mahasiswa yang membuatnya lebih mudah daripada membuka kamus, mereka dapat melakukan dengan mudah dan memahami untuk menggunakan aplikasi dan dapat meningkatkan pengucapan kata-kata yang lebih baik. Kata kunci: transkripsi, tophonetics, pengucapan, aplikasi, pemahaman

Abstract

The important of this paper is live streaming using gadget as a learning English speaking in Covid-19 era relying on the internet and utilizing the social media platform facebook. This research is a descriptive qualitative study, used on 40 students. The result identified seven steps to create a Facebook group and learning tool to produce lecture units, student activity sheets, and student worksheets. The analysis of this study discussed the seven steps of English learning design of English learning devices based on live streaming Facebook; 1) starting from creating an online Facebook group, 2) entering the design phase or design begins with entering or clicking on the facebook application, and then create a class facebook group, 3) write the name of the group of courses taught in class, 4) click type closed groups, 5) click to find the link, 6) click "Share" to see the class group link, 7) click copy to the clipboard. Student responses to learning are good, thus this learning design can be applied in the classroom. so the result of this design steps, They can practice learning English, especially speaking in live streaming video, which is a new activity for students on social media, namely Facebook.

Abstract

Feminism is a movement of struggle to fight against all forms of objectification of women. The main character in the Cigarette Girl novel is a very independent woman. It was analyzed through feminism approach if the literary work is related to a woman as one of the characters in the story. The objective of this research is to describe the resistances of woman’s struggle in Cigarette Girl Novel by Ratih Kumala. This reseacrh is analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method and used feminism approach to Beauvoir theory. The findings of this research are women can work, women can become intellectuals, and to transcend its boundaries. The result of this research that the women have same capability to survive in their lives as the men do therefore all the things that is point to them such as second sex, retarded, limited and weak go vague and even disappear because of the story which is told by the writer of the novel.

Abstract

This article is about overview of language learning in sense relation. The aim of this article is to know sameness and oppositeness in sense relation of language learning. The method was based on library research. Study about language, so study about the meaning of that language because language is a tool of communication to each other. Semantic is study about the meaning, the meaning of a language could be seen from its relationship between words. The sense of one word is related to another sense. In this case, the result of this research is there are two main groups of sense relations. The first group is the sense relations with regard to the similarity or sameness (synonymy, hyponymy, entailment, paraphrase, metonymy, anaphora, presupposition). The second one is the sense relations of oppositeness (antonymy, anomaly, ambiguity, polysemy, homonymy, contradiction). Those are explained in this article.

Abstract

Translation as applied linguistics is one of the important aspects that should be owned by every student. The aims of this article are to identify the literal translation method used in the product of translation of the novel “The Rise of the underground”. Furthermore, technique of analysis data of this research is descriptive qualitative method. The researchers found that level shift is commonly used by translator to translate the novel it can be proved with literal translation method. the researchers concluded that the Literal translation by using Newmark theory is the source language grammatical forms that are converted to their nearest target language equivalent. In addition, the tactic compromises on an appropriate meaning. So, that no assonance, or repetition jars in the translation. Translation shift helps the researchers to get easier to describe how the process of translation can be occurred in both of source and target language. The implication of this research is that students or researchers can know well about literals translation when used in novels, and can also be applied when the communication process needs to be translated. Abstract

This study is to determine the various forms of conversational implicature and their function on the talk show Oprah Winfrey Network's SuperSoul Sunday Program. The data were evaluated descriptively qualitatively. The results show that three types of data classified as generalized conversational implicature and eleven types of data classified as particularized conversational implicature, depending on the utterance. Each host has a unique personality and circumstance, which contributes to defiance of the dictum. By floating the maxim, the speaker inferred meaning through his or her justifications, which either too brief or too detailed. As a result, the speaker delivered an irrelevant and ambiguous speech in response to the interlocutor. In conclusion, this implicature discovered the representational, directive, expressive, and declarative functions of utterances.Keywords: Implicature, Conversational Implicature, Talkshow, Floating The Maxim

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research investigates the learning strategies used by English as a foreign language (EFL) students and gender differences in the strategy inventory for language learning (SILL) in Indonesia. To gather the data, this study employed quantitative descriptive methods with a Google form-based questionnaire involving 110 college students, and the data were analysed using SPSS 25. The fifty items of the questionnaire were divided into six strategies: memory strategy, cognitive strategy, metacognitive strategy, compensation strategy, emotion strategy, and social strategy. Findings of the study indicate that the students use all the strategies in learning English, and all these strategies are in a high level of use except for memory strategy which is in a moderate level. Gender differences data show that most male students preferred the social strategy (36%), whereas most female students preferred metacognitive strategy (56.47%) suggesting that male and female students have different learning styles. The results of this research shed light on the importance of raising teachers’ awareness of their students’ diversity in learning strategies. Thus, teachers should improve their repertoire of teaching techniques and strategies to meet students’ different learning styles in the classroom. ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menyelidiki strategi pembelajaran yang digunakan oleh siswa bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing (EFL) dan perbedaan gender dalam inventarisasi strategi untuk pembelajaran bahasa (SILL) di Indonesia. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan kuesioner berbasis Google form yang melibatkan 110 mahasiswa, dan data dianalisis menggunakan SPSS 25. Lima puluh item kuesioner dibagi menjadi enam strategi: strategi memori, strategi kognitif, strategi metakognitif. strategi, strategi kompensasi, strategi emosi, dan strategi sosial. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa menggunakan semua strategi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, dan semua jenis strategi berada di tingkat tinggi kecuali strategi memori yang berada di tingkat sedang. Data perbedaan gender menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar siswa laki-laki lebih menyukai strategi sosial (36%), sedangkan sebagian besar siswa perempuan lebih menyukai strategi metakognitif (56,47%) menunjukkan bahwa siswa laki-laki dan perempuan memiliki gaya belajar yang berbeda secara signifikan. Hasil penelitian ini menyoroti pentingnya meningkatkan kesadaran guru tentang keragaman siswa mereka dalam strategi pembelajaran. Dengan demikian, guru harus meningkatkan repertoar teknik dan strategi pengajaran mereka untuk memenuhi gaya belajar siswa yang berbeda di kelas.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to know how the central frames of color-blind racism are experienced by minorities in Nic Stone’s novel Dear Martin. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the object by using the theory of color-blind racism by Bonilla Silva. The results of the research are in the form of several findings about racist acts in ideology of color-blind racism by the majority (white people) against the minority (black people) especially the teenager of African-American. There are four central frames of color-blind racism as the problem of this research, namely; Abstract Liberalism, Naturalization Racism, Cultural Racism, and Minimization Racism. The researcher found that racist acts still occur in African-American life based on the four central frames color-blind racism system applied to racial equality in the novel.

Abstract

The policy of many universities regarding to the mandatory of TOEFL test for students has become a new discourse in academic circles, especially from the student's perspective. Although the standards set by each university are different, there are some similar conditions faced by students in meeting these standards such as, TOEFL becoming a burden for students, particularly those with limited English skills, moreover, it is increasing the cost of study by requiring students to pay for the test execution cost. Therefore, in line with this policy, the campus must provide support so that each student can meet the expected qualifications. This study aims to describe how the TOEFL Practicum Class is organized by the English language and literature department to help students meet the TOEFL standard set by the campus, which is 500. The experimental method in this research uses a type of research design with a pretest-posttest control design method, and the total sample used was 64 students from the fifth semester of English and literature department.  this study consists of 3 stages, namely preparation stage, implementation stage and final or evaluation. stages. Based on the findings regarding to the effectiveness of the TOEFL Practicum Class implementation, it can be seen from the results of the pre-test and post-test means score, which seems to have increased toward the score of the students.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat tentang pelatihan sitasi untuk karya tulis ilmiah mahasiswa menggunakan mendeley reference. Penyusunan daftar pustaka mahasiswa belum rapih dan belum mengetahui menggunakan aplikasi mendeley reference. Mendeley merupakan perangkat lunak manajemen referensi yang dapat membantu siswa mengatur dan mengutip sumber penelitian mereka. Pada kegiatan ini, peserta hadir sebanyak seratus orang, dari berbagai angkatan semester berjalan maupun semester akhir. Pelaksanaan ini di selenggarkan di aula Fakultas Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Negeri Makassar. Penyampaian materi dan latihan menggunakan mendeley reference. Hasilnya, peserta mengikuti dengan baik kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat tentang pelihan sitasi menggunakan mendeley. Peserta merespond dengan komentar positif tentang pelatihan mendeley reference ini, karena dapat memudahkan dalam menyusun daftar pustaka baik itu tugas-tugas maupun laporan akhirnya nanti dalam bentuk skripsi. ini bisa digunakan untuk mengimpor dan mengorganisasi referensi dari basis data, PDF, dan sumber lainnya, selanjutnya menghasilkan kutipan teks dan daftar pustaka dalam berbagai gaya kutipan (misalnya APA, MLA, Chicago). kemudian, berkolaborasi dengan teman sekelas dan pembimbing dalam proyek riset, akhirnya menemukan dan terus-menerus up-to-date dengan penelitian terbaru di bidang yang di tekuni. Untuk menggunakan Mendeley, mahasiswa perlu membuat akun gratis di situs website Mendeley. selanjutnya dapat mengimpor referensi, menambahkan catatan, dan membuat kutipan dan daftar pustaka. oleh karena itu, mendeley juga menawarkan plugin untuk Microsoft Word dan LibreOffice, membuatnya mudah untuk memasukkan kutipan dan daftar pustaka langsung ke dalam makalah riset.
