Abstract

Obesity in women of childbearing age is a growing health problem, not only due to dietary patterns and lack of physical activity, but also due to the influence of social and cultural factors. This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences, perspectives, and habits of women of reproductive age who are obese within the context of local social and cultural norms. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data was collected through in-depth interviews with five primary informants who are obese, as well as triangulation informants from community health workers and healthcare professionals. The results of the study indicate that perceptions of obesity are still predominantly viewed from the perspective of physical appearance rather than health. Social factors such as family eating patterns, snacking habits, comments from others, and lack of physical activity are triggers for obesity. Meanwhile, local culture has a varied influence—some communities are beginning to adopt slim body ideals, while others remain neutral. Obesity also impacts self-confidence, social stigma, and limitations in daily activities. However, most informants expressed hope for a healthier life. This study recommends interventions that consider local cultural values and involve family and community support in obesity prevention effort.

Abstract

Typhoid fever remains a significant public health burden in developing countries, including Indonesia, where poor hygiene and sanitation contribute to its endemicity. This study aimed to identify behavioral risk factors associated with typhoid fever in the working area of UPT Puskesmas Balongpanggang, Gresik Regency. A quantitative, analytic case control study was conducted involving 74 respondents, equally divided between the case group (patients diagnosed with typhoid fever) and the control group (individuals without the disease). Purposive sampling was applied to select participants, and data collection was carried out through structured interviews using a validated questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using chi square tests to evaluate associations between specific behaviors and disease occurrence. The study identified six significant behavioral risk factors: eating outside the home (OR = 5.022; 95% CI: 1.465–17.217), consuming raw food (OR = 15.231; 95% CI: 1.850–125.420), drinking untreated water (OR = 10.828; 95% CI: 3.182–36.848), poor knowledge about typhoid (OR = 90.417; 95% CI: 16.991–481.135), family history of typhoid (OR = 4.758; 95% CI: 1.720–13.164), and not washing hands after defecation (OR = 36.458; 95% CI: 7.491–177.444). These results emphasize the role of individual hygiene practices and household behaviors in typhoid transmission. In conclusion, this study provides strong evidence for prioritizing behavior focused public health interventions and educational programs as key strategies for typhoid fever prevention in endemic communities.

Abstract

Several studies conducted on tuberculosis (TB) management have largely focused on patient-centered interventions, with limited qualitative exploration of family perceptions and caregiving roles, particularly in rural Indonesian contexts. This study addresses that gap by examining how families perceive and engage in the care of pulmonary TB patients in the service area of UPTD Puskesmas Mowewe, East Kolaka Regency, in 2024. Employing a qualitative descriptive design with a phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document reviews involving six informants, including family members of TB patients. The study reveals a spectrum of family perceptions, from comprehensive understanding to persistent stigma and misconceptions about TB transmission and treatment. These perceptions significantly influence caregiving behaviors, with some families offering strong emotional and logistical support, while others demonstrate limited involvement due to lack of knowledge and access to health information. Findings highlight that the family's role is central in supporting treatment adherence, facilitating access to healthcare, and promoting healthy practices within the household. The study underscores the need for structured education and empowerment programs tailored to families, especially in rural settings. These efforts are critical for enhancing family participation in TB care and achieving better public health outcomes. Recommendations include integrating family-based strategies into TB control programs and strengthening collaboration between healthcare providers and families.

Abstract

The implementation of the Enhanced Recovery After Cesarean Surgery (ERACS) method as an innovation in the Sectio Cesarea (SC) surgical procedure aims to accelerate recovery, minimize pain, and improve patient comfort. Although it has been clinically proven, there is still limited research exploring patients' subjective experiences with this method, particularly in eastern Indonesia. This study aims to explore in depth the physical, emotional, psychological experiences, as well as perceptions of service and patient expectations after undergoing SC with the ERACS method at Banggai Laut General Hospital. The study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants and analyzed using Braun & Clarke's thematic analysis technique. The results showed that patients experienced rapid physical recovery, minimal pain, and were able to mobilize early. Emotionally, patients felt calm and stable, supported by good communication with medical staff and family support. However, information about the ERACS procedure before surgery was still perceived as lacking detail. Patients also hope that this method continues to be implemented with improvements in educational aspects and financial support from BPJS. Patients' experiences with the ERACS method are generally very positive and reflect the success of this approach not only clinically but also in creating a more comfortable, efficient, and humane childbirth experience. This study recommends enhancing preoperative education, postoperative monitoring, and more inclusive financial support systems.

Abstract

Instrumen pengumpulan data berupa kuesioner tertutup disusun berdasarkan empat konstruk utama dalam model Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT): performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, dan facilitating conditions. Seluruh populasi sebanyak 23 tenaga kesehatan dijadikan sampel melalui teknik total sampling.

Abstract

Abstract

Digital transformation in health services faces significant challenges, particularly the gap between rapid technological advancements and the readiness of institutional work culture. This study investigates the cultural lag experienced during the implementation of digital systems at the East Nunukan Health Center. Using an observational qualitative approach, it examines health workers' responses to digital applications such as e-Puskesmas and various Health Information Systems. The findings reveal substantial resistance to change, attributed to factors like limited digital literacy, inadequate infrastructure, and the persistence of traditional work patterns. Despite the introduction of digital systems, healthcare practices remain largely dependent on manual methods, highlighting the disconnect between technological progress and the socio-cultural preparedness of healthcare organizations. The study concludes that this cultural lag within healthcare institutions can significantly impede the effectiveness of digital transformation efforts. To address these issues, the research advocates for ongoing training, improvement of supporting facilities, and the adoption of strategies that align with local work culture. This research provides valuable insights into the socio-cultural dynamics affecting the digitization of public services, especially in border regions with limited technological access.

Abstract

Adolescence is a critical phase in individual development, especially for adolescent girls who begin to experience menstruation as a sign of reproductive maturity. However, not all adolescents experience menstruation normally; some experience disorders such as menstrual pain, irregular cycles, and prolonged bleeding. This study aims to explore in depth the subjective experiences of adolescent girls with menstrual disorders at SMP Negeri 2 Bunta, Banggai Regency, focusing on the nature of the disorders experienced, their interpretation of these experiences, coping strategies, and the social support received. This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The primary informants were female adolescents in grades VII–IX who had experienced menstrual disorders in the past six months, selected purposively until data saturation was achieved. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that menstrual disorders are viewed as normal by most informants, despite causing physical discomfort and psychological anxiety. Adolescents' responses to these disorders vary, ranging from the use of warm compresses and medication to no intervention at all. The primary sources of information are mothers and social media, while the roles of teachers and schools remain limited. Social support is most commonly provided by family, although some adolescents also feel supported by peers and teachers. This study emphasizes the importance of systematic reproductive health education, school involvement in supporting adolescents, and the creation of safe and stigma-free discussion spaces regarding menstruation-related issues.

Abstract

This article investigates the process of acculturation between Islam and local cultures in the Indonesian archipelago (Nusantara) from the 13th to the 17th century. Employing historical and cultural approaches, the study is grounded in the theories of cultural acculturation, diffusion, Islamic indigenization, and symbolic interactionism. The objective is to demonstrate that Islam did not arrive as a hegemonic or coercive force, but rather integrated harmoniously with existing cultural traditions. By examining the roles of trade, art, governance, and religious rituals, the article highlights how Islam engaged in constructive and adaptive dialogue with indigenous practices. The findings suggest that the emergence of Islam in Indonesia was marked by a creative and dynamic process of cultural negotiation, ultimately contributing to the development of a moderate and tolerant Islamic identity.
