Abstract

Smartphones have become an essential part of students’ lives, influencing their learning interest. This study examines the relationship between smartphone usage intensity and primary school students' learning interest using a quantitative survey approach. A total of 64 students from SDN Bandar Lor 1 Kota Kediri participated, with data analyzed using the Chi-Square test (χ² = 218.439, df = 30, p < 0.05). Findings show that higher smartphone usage is significantly linked to increased learning interest. 80% of students use smartphones for study-related searches, 75% for learning apps, and 70% for completing homework efficiently. Additionally, over 70% reported enhanced learning motivation. However, 77% also spend excessive time on smartphones, mainly for entertainment, leading to potential distractions and dependency. These results highlight that smartphones can be effective learning tools when used appropriately, but unregulated use may negatively impact focus. Guidance from parents and teachers is crucial to maximizing educational benefits while minimizing risks. This study is limited to a single school; future research should expand the sample size and explore long-term effects of smartphone use on cognitive and emotional development.

Abstract

Dental caries remains a significant health problem among young children, especially in kindergarten.Data indicate a high prevalence of caries among children aged 4-6 years in Indonesia, which is attributed to a lack of knowledge about dental hygiene, improper toothbrushing techniques, and a habit of consuming sugary foods. This community service activity was conducted as an effort to detect and prevent dental issues early on, as childhood is a critical period for establishing healthy lifestyle habits. The objectives of this activity are: (1) To conduct early detection of dental caries; (2) To enhance children's and teachers' knowledge about oral health, and (3) To train proper brushing techniques through interactive educational approaches. The community service was conducted at Dharma Wanita Kindergarten, Kediri, involving 40 children aged 4–6 years. The methods used included: (1) Dental examinations, (2) Interactive education through lectures, demonstrations of toothbrushing using audio- visual media such as videos on proper toothbrushing techniques, jaw models (phantoms), and educational games, and (3) Knowledge assessment through pretest-posttest questionnaires. Data were analysed using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that 72% of students had dental caries. Following the education, there was an improvement in students' understanding of how to maintain dental and oral health, as well as how to brush their teeth properly. The toothbrushing demonstration successfully improved the children's skills, with 95% able to practise the correct technique. Teachers responded positively to the programme. This activity was effective in increasing awareness and promoting dental health practices among preschool children. Collaboration between health workers and schools is essential for the sustainability of the programme. Recommendations: (1) Regular monitoring by the community health centre, (2) Integration of dental health materials into the early childhood education curriculum, and (3) Development of school dental health cadres.

Abstract

Introduction. Indonesia's geographical area appears to be separated into two regions: highlands and lowlands. Highlands impact hemoglobin levels. Because of the decreased partial pressure of oxygen and the body's acclimatization response, being at a high altitude results in hypoxia. In order to adjust to low oxygen levels, hemoglobin levels rise. This study aimed to compare hemoglobin levels using the hemoglobin POCT test among teenagers residing in the lowlands of Blitar Regency, East Java. Methods. Purposive sampling is used in the research method, which employs a cross-sectional approach. The sample is chosen using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results. With an average hemoglobin level of 14.6833 g/dl, teenagers in the Highlands had normal hemoglobin levels for up to five of them (42%), and abnormal hemoglobin levels for seven of them (58%). The average hemoglobin level among teens in the lowlands was 12.2333 g/dl, with three (25%) and nine (75%) having normal levels. Using the Independent T-Test, the data analysis revealed a significant value of 0.038 <0.05. Conclusion. Hemoglobin levels of adolescents who live in the highlands of Semen Village RT. 03 RW. 04 had an average hemoglobin level of 14.6833 g/dl, and hemoglobin levels in adolescents who lived in the lowlands of Sutojayan Village, RT. 01 PC. 04 with an average hemoglobin level of 12.23 g/dL and a significance value of 0.038.

Abstract

Learning concentration is a critical factor in students' academic success. However, many students struggle to maintain focus during the learning process. This study examined the effect of Brain Gym on concentration among third-grade students at SDN Bandar Lor 1, Kediri City. Using a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design, 26 students were equally divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group practiced Brain Gym® for ten minutes before lessons over four weeks, while the control group followed regular classroom routines. Concentration was measured through paper-based tests, observations, and questionnaires, including the Image Difference Test, Number Concentration Test, Word Arrangement Test, and Visual Memory Test. The results revealed that both groups were comparable at pretest (M = 28.62 control; M = 29.92 experimental). At posttest, the control group showed a small, non-significant increase (M = 32.08, p = 0.072), while the experimental group demonstrated a highly significant improvement (M = 53.38, p < 0.001) with a large gain score of 23.46 and effect size d = 3.12. These findings indicate that Brain Gym is an effective, low-cost, and practical classroom intervention that enhances concentration and supports learning readiness.
