Abstract

Arabic language learning in Indonesia continues to face challenges, particularly in developing students’ Maharah Istima’ (listening skills), which are often hindered by limited vocabulary, rapid speech input, and the dominance of passive instructional approaches. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of integrating Roleplay and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) in improving students’ listening ability within a classroom context. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group. The participants consisted of 20 fifth-grade students at Al-Irhaam Global Islamic School Bandung, divided into an experimental group receiving Roleplay and FGD-based instruction and a control group receiving conventional audio-based instruction. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test and analyzed using Shapiro-Wilk normality test, homogeneity test, paired sample t-test, and N-Gain analysis. The findings indicate a statistically significant improvement in the experimental group (p < 0.05), with mean scores increasing from 72.0 to 88.0 and an N-Gain value of 0.63 (moderate category). Compared to the control group, the results suggest that interactive and collaborative learning activities contribute more effectively to the development of listening skills. These findings highlight the pedagogical potential of integrating Roleplay and FGD in promoting active engagement and deeper processing of language input. While this study is limited to a small-scale classroom context, it offers practical implications for designing interactive listening instruction and suggests opportunities for future integration with AI-supported language learning tools.

Abstract

Arabic literary criticism is a vital component of the Arab intellectual tradition, evolving alongside the development of Arabic literature across various historical periods. This article aims to compare the characteristics and approaches of classical and modern Arabic literary criticism by examining their respective features, methods, and underlying principles. This research employs a qualitative method with a comparative study approach, analyzing relevant literature including books, journals, and scholarly articles. The data is processed through narrative and descriptive analysis involving data reduction, presentation, and verification. The findings indicate that classical Arabic criticism tends to be intuitive and normative, focusing on linguistic accuracy, poetic structure, and aesthetic appreciation, rooted in oral tradition and Arabic rhetoric. In contrast, modern Arabic criticism has grown into a more scientific and interdisciplinary practice, influenced by Western theories such as structuralism, psychoanalysis, and postcolonialism, with a contextual emphasis on meaning and ideology within literary texts. This study shows that the difference in critical paradigms reflects not only a shift in time periods but also broader cultural and intellectual transformations, making Arabic literary criticism a dynamic and ever-evolving field

Abstract

Arabic language learning often faces major challenges in maharah kitabah (writing skills), which is considered one of the most complex language skills because it requires the integration of linguistic, cognitive, and affective dimensions. Writing is not merely a productive language activity but also a reflection of learners’ language proficiency, as it involves the ability to organize ideas, apply linguistic knowledge, and communicate meaning effectively. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the concept of maharah kitabah development and formulate an integrative and comprehensive framework for Arabic writing instruction. To achieve this objective, the study employs a descriptive qualitative method using a library research approach. Data were collected through a critical review of relevant academic sources, including textbooks, national and international journal articles, and previous studies related to Arabic writing instruction. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis to identify major themes, instructional strategies, and conceptual patterns in the development of maharah kitabah. The findings reveal that the development of writing skills requires systematic, adaptive, and sustainable learning strategies. These strategies include gradual writing practice, contextual learning approaches, the integration of digital technology, the insya’iyah method, and multicultural-based instruction. Furthermore, the study proposes an integrative conceptual model consisting of three stages: introduction, development, and production. The model is designed to facilitate the progressive development of learners’ writing abilities by addressing linguistic, cognitive, and affective needs at each stage. Theoretically, this study contributes an alternative framework for creating more holistic, meaningful, and adaptive Arabic language learning in response to contemporary educational challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perspectives of sociologists and hadith scholars on the practice of interfaith marriage in Indonesia, as well as to evaluate the social and religious impacts of the interaction between these two perspectives within the context of a Muslim society that is plural yet tends to be legally conservative in religious matters. This research is significant because interfaith marriage frequently generates dissonance between the constitutional rights of citizens and shar‘i norms, while also serving as a site of value negotiation amid the increasing intensity of interreligious interactions. The method employed is descriptive qualitative research using a sociology of hadith approach, combining an analysis of both classical and contemporary hadith literature with theories of the sociology of religion. Data were collected through a literature review encompassing hadith collections, exegetical and jurisprudential works of scholars, academic publications, as well as legal and policy reports. Data analysis was conducted using thematic content analysis, hermeneutics, and comparative analysis in order to identify points of convergence and divergence between sociological and normative-hadith perspectives. The findings reveal that the sociological perspective positions interfaith marriage as a complex social phenomenon—closely related to social integration, identity negotiation, and value conflicts—whereas the hadith perspective emphasizes the preservation of faith, household stability, and protection of lineage, with only limited and conditional space for permissibility. The interaction between these perspectives produces multidimensional effects, ranging from social resistance and the marginalization of couples to the creation of interfaith dialogue spaces within inclusive urban communities. The implications of this research lie in the need for policies that bridge religious norms and positive law, including through interfaith dialogue, public education, and pastoral guidance for interfaith families. The originality of this study lies in its integration of sociological analysis with hadith studies to contextualize the issue of interfaith marriage, offering an analytical framework that connects religious texts with socio-historical dynamics, and providing practical contributions for policy development in plural societies.
