Abstract

Although the pedagogical benefits of comics have been widely proven, attention to the operational aspects needed to support visual literacy strategies in resource-limited environments remains minimal. This study aims to analyze the gap between students' visual literacy preferences and the availability of school library resources at MI Asih Putera using the Dual Coding Theory. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, this study integrates survey data from 30 students in grades 3-5 with in-depth interviews with the principal, teachers, and librarians. Quantitative findings reveal a disconnect where, despite students' high preference for comics (73%) and interest in physical facilities reaching 93%, there is a sharp gap where 93% of students report unmet needs, particularly in library collection availability, as well as minimal interaction with librarians (13%). The qualitative phase explains that although comics successfully serve as a strategic cognitive hook, library services fail to keep pace with this need due to structural barriers, including a phased procurement budget system, irrelevant book donations, and administrative burdens stemming from manual library management. This study concludes that schools' operational capacity hampers the success of visual literacy strategies. To overcome this, the study recommends cost-effective transformations, such as adopting open-source library automation to ease administrative workload, using open-access e-comics displayed on classroom projectors to address hardware deficits, and formalizing comics into the curriculum to ensure budgetary priority.

Abstract

This research assessed the quality of library services at MI Persis 29 Bandung from the perspective of its teaching staff. Recognizing the vital role of elementary school libraries in fostering literacy and supporting the educational process, this study employed the LibQUAL+ model to understand teachers' perceptions. The methodology involved a survey administered to teachers, which gauged their minimum, desired, and perceived levels of service across three core dimensions: Affect of Service, Information Control, and Library as Place.  The investigation revealed that while the library services generally met or slightly surpassed teachers' minimum expectations in several aspects, a consistent gap existed when compared to their desired levels of service across all dimensions. Positive adequacy in areas such as basic staff friendliness and ease of locating books was noted. However, significant shortcomings were identified in achieving ideal service levels, particularly concerning the desire for more proactive and knowledgeable staff, a richer collection of diverse reading materials including up-to-date information, and a more comfortable, quiet, and inspiring library environment. Based on these findings, the study offered targeted recommendations aimed at enhancing the overall quality and responsiveness of the library services to better meet the needs of its users.

Abstract

Low initial reading skills are an indication of low student literacy. This research aims to analyze the early reading skills of Phase A students, which includes grades 1 and 2 of elementary school. The research used a descriptive qualitative method, involving 122 students from two elementary schools in Garut Regency, aged 6 to 8 years old. The instrument used in this study was the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) reading test. The results of the study showed that 68% of students in Phase A had early reading skills in the category of needing guidance. Meanwhile, 6.6% of students were in the sufficient category, and 25.4% were in the good category. Based on EGRA indicators, letter recognition ability has a percentage of 55.15%, syllable reading ability 48.76%, word reading 41.49%, listening comprehension 34.44%, fluency 31.87%, and reading comprehension 16.53%. Thru analysis of the implementation of the EGRA test, students' reading abilities can be mapped more deeply, allowing teachers to take further action appropriate to the needs of each student. This finding is expected to serve as a basis for schools to design more effective learning strategies to improve student literacy in elementary schools.

Abstract

Purpose Research: This study analyzes the collection development process at the Al Azhar 30 Islamic School Library, Bandung, using the Evans & Saponaro (2005) model. It specifically examines how Islamic values are integrated into selection criteria and how collaboration occurs between the sole librarian and teaching staff. Research Method: A qualitative single-case study was employed. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with librarian, participant observation, and documentation. Analysis Data: Data were analyzed using the interactive model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014). Results: The findings reveal that the selection process follows a systematic flow from needs analysis to evaluation. Islamic values act as a "primary filter" to exclude content containing violence, sensuality, or doctrinal deviations. However, this process relies heavily on informal collaboration and "tacit knowledge" due to the absence of a formal written collection development policy. Conclusions: It is concluded that the internalization of religious values as tacit knowledge compensates for the absence of a written policy. The study recommends formalizing selection policies and establishing specific criteria for digital collections to meet modern educational needs. Keywords: children's literature, collection development, collection selection, islamic values, school library

Abstract

Digital literacy is a crucial competency for Generation Alpha students growing up in an increasingly complex digital environment. Although elementary school students are now intensively exposed to technology from an early age, their digital literacy levels have not yet developed optimally across all dimensions, and the contextual factors that shape their profile differences, such as grade level, age, gender, and device ownership, are not yet empirically understood. This study aims to analyze the digital literacy levels of upper-grade students at a public elementary school in Cimahi City, based on the four pillars of digital literacy, and to compare their profiles across these contextual variables. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted with 150 students through purposive sampling, using a 20-item questionnaire adapted from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Development (Kemkomdigi) framework (2025). The results showed an overall achievement of 83.56% (Good category), with the highest digital security (90.59%) and the lowest digital skills (74.52%). There is a consistent upward trend across grade (79.71%–85.87%) and age (76.67%–85.17%), with minimal gender differences, and students with their own devices outperformed those using parental devices on the digital skills and safety pillar. The gap between high levels of ethical awareness and digital safety on the one hand and low levels of productive skills on the other hand indicates that technology exposure has not been optimally directed in the learning context. These findings indicate the need for targeted interventions to strengthen elementary school students' productive digital competencies.

Abstract

SINERGI UPI is a dynamic archive management system at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI). The use of SINERGI within UPI needs to be pursued for optimal management of dynamic archives. One thing that needs to be considered is the user satisfaction component to create a good impression for the academic community as SINERGI users. This research was conducted to analyze SINERGI from the aspect of user satisfaction. The research uses a quantitative approach with survey methods. The survey was conducted among study program staff within the Faculty of Educational Sciences UPI who actively use SINERGI, namely thirteen people. The data analysis technique uses Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA). The research results illustrate that all indicators fall into quadrant II: Keep up the good work. This shows that the SINERGI user satisfaction of the FIP UPI academic community is satisfied with the SINERGI facilities, and it is hoped that it will be even better in the future. However, there are hopes and suggestions for improvements for the future development of the SINERGI website, namely in the menu bar and notifications. Some staff expect an additional menu, namely notifications sent via email or WhatsApp. This is to make it easier when there is an incoming letter notification so that the staff can respond immediately. There is also another proposal in the form of a follow-up workshop related to using SINERGI at a higher level.

Abstract

The Library and Information Science Study Program of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia has a vision to become a superior and characterful study program in the library and information science field. To achieve this vision, this study program organizes the Librarian Professionalism Internship Program as one of the mandatory programs for seventh-semester students. This program aims to provide students with direct experience in understanding librarianship practices, especially in school libraries. This program directly involves students practicing in the library and gaining experience in library management. The program results are then presented in writing using a qualitative approach and case study method with a focus on the application of ICT, organizing information, and user guidance. Through this program, students can learn various aspects of the implementation of librarianship, different from institutional libraries, and develop relevant technical (hard skills) and non-technical (soft skills). The school library itself has a strategic role as a means of supporting lifelong learning by providing easier access to information to students. The study results explain that the application of ICT in the SMAN 1 Bandung Library focuses more on the automation of library collections, while providing circulation services is still done manually.   Abstrak Program Studi Perpustakaan dan Sains Informasi Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia memiliki visi untuk menjadi program studi unggul dan berkarakter di bidang perpustakaan dan sains informasi.
