Abstract

Background: School libraries are often underutilised as centres of learning and literacy development, despite their great potential to support the educational process. The gap between the ideal function of libraries and the actual practice of library services in the field necessitates an evaluation that focuses on users’ real experiencesPurpose: This study aims to evaluate the role of libraries in increasing students’ interest in literacy at Labschool Elementary School UPI Bandung and to identify obstacles in the implementation of existing literacy programs. Methods: This research used field research with an evaluative approach using a goal-free evaluation model. The research subjects included 20 fourth-grade students as survey respondents and library managers as interview informants. Data collection techniques included a three-level Likert-scale survey to measure students’ literacy interest and semi-structured interviews to explore the condition of library services. Data analysis was conducted descriptively to interpret student responses and field findings. Results: The results showed that most students responded neutrally to the school-organised literacy activities. Conclusion: The literacy programs have not been fully able to foster students’ interest in reading optimally. Library services are still dominated by the function of providing Reading materials without the development of innovative and participatory literacy programs.

Abstract

Although the pedagogical benefits of comics have been widely proven, attention to the operational aspects needed to support visual literacy strategies in resource-limited environments remains minimal. This study aims to analyze the gap between students' visual literacy preferences and the availability of school library resources at MI Asih Putera using the Dual Coding Theory. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, this study integrates survey data from 30 students in grades 3-5 with in-depth interviews with the principal, teachers, and librarians. Quantitative findings reveal a disconnect where, despite students' high preference for comics (73%) and interest in physical facilities reaching 93%, there is a sharp gap where 93% of students report unmet needs, particularly in library collection availability, as well as minimal interaction with librarians (13%). The qualitative phase explains that although comics successfully serve as a strategic cognitive hook, library services fail to keep pace with this need due to structural barriers, including a phased procurement budget system, irrelevant book donations, and administrative burdens stemming from manual library management. This study concludes that schools' operational capacity hampers the success of visual literacy strategies. To overcome this, the study recommends cost-effective transformations, such as adopting open-source library automation to ease administrative workload, using open-access e-comics displayed on classroom projectors to address hardware deficits, and formalizing comics into the curriculum to ensure budgetary priority.

Abstract

This research assessed the quality of library services at MI Persis 29 Bandung from the perspective of its teaching staff. Recognizing the vital role of elementary school libraries in fostering literacy and supporting the educational process, this study employed the LibQUAL+ model to understand teachers' perceptions. The methodology involved a survey administered to teachers, which gauged their minimum, desired, and perceived levels of service across three core dimensions: Affect of Service, Information Control, and Library as Place.  The investigation revealed that while the library services generally met or slightly surpassed teachers' minimum expectations in several aspects, a consistent gap existed when compared to their desired levels of service across all dimensions. Positive adequacy in areas such as basic staff friendliness and ease of locating books was noted. However, significant shortcomings were identified in achieving ideal service levels, particularly concerning the desire for more proactive and knowledgeable staff, a richer collection of diverse reading materials including up-to-date information, and a more comfortable, quiet, and inspiring library environment. Based on these findings, the study offered targeted recommendations aimed at enhancing the overall quality and responsiveness of the library services to better meet the needs of its users.

Abstract

This research examines the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka, which is gradually being introduced across basic education units in Indonesia. This curriculum is designed to provide flexibility for learner-centered learning and adapt education to the dynamics of the times and the individual needs of students. In this context, SD Muhammadiyah 4 Bandung is one of the schools that has adopted the Kurikulum Merdeka and implemented it in the Informatics subjects. This study aims to assess the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka at SD Muhammadiyah 4 Bandung, focusing on the implementation of Informatics learning and student learning outcomes. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach, involving in-depth interviews with the principal, the vice principal for curriculum, and the Informatics teachers. The results showed that although this curriculum provides teachers with flexibility to customize learning, there are still challenges, such as teacher readiness with technology and differences in students' ability to operate devices. Therefore, continuous teacher training and additional support for students are needed to optimize the implementation of the curriculum. This research provides recommendations to strengthen teacher training, increase evaluation time, and improve support systems to be more responsive to evolving educational needs. Abstract

Low initial reading skills are an indication of low student literacy. This research aims to analyze the early reading skills of Phase A students, which includes grades 1 and 2 of elementary school. The research used a descriptive qualitative method, involving 122 students from two elementary schools in Garut Regency, aged 6 to 8 years old. The instrument used in this study was the Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) reading test. The results of the study showed that 68% of students in Phase A had early reading skills in the category of needing guidance. Meanwhile, 6.6% of students were in the sufficient category, and 25.4% were in the good category. Based on EGRA indicators, letter recognition ability has a percentage of 55.15%, syllable reading ability 48.76%, word reading 41.49%, listening comprehension 34.44%, fluency 31.87%, and reading comprehension 16.53%. Thru analysis of the implementation of the EGRA test, students' reading abilities can be mapped more deeply, allowing teachers to take further action appropriate to the needs of each student. This finding is expected to serve as a basis for schools to design more effective learning strategies to improve student literacy in elementary schools.
