Abstract

Pringgajurang Utara Village has abundant coffee plantation potential, but its utilization is not yet optimal because coffee leaves from pruning are only considered waste. In fact, coffee leaves are rich in beneficial compounds such as flavonoids and polyphenols with low caffeine levels. This community service activity aims to empower the villagers through sosialization on processing coffee leaves into economically valuable herbal tea products. The implementation method includes a two-stage socialization, focusing on the coffee plant and the making of tea from coffee leaves. The first socialization focused on coffee cultivation and post-harvest in general, followed by a second socialization on the techniques and stages of coffee leaf tea processing. The processing stages themselves include picking, washing, drying, roasting, crushing, and attractive product packaging. The results of this program showed high enthusiasm from the community. This program succeeded in creating a coffee leaf tea product that can be used as a village's flagship product, thus opening new business opportunities and potentially increasing community income.

Abstract

Literacy programs play an important role in improving the quality of human resources from an early age, especially in areas with limited access to reading materials such as Merembu Village, West Lombok. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Mataram University Community Service Program (KKN) in improving children's literacy through a participatory approach. The method used is Participatory Action Research (PAR) involving children, teachers, parents, and village officials. The main activities included managing reading corners, optimizing the Community Reading Park, reading aloud, reviewing books intelligently, reading-based projects, writing simple stories, and village-level literacy appreciation. The results of the study showed an increase in children's interest in reading, text comprehension, critical thinking, creativity, and courage in expressing ideas. Constraints in the form of limited literacy facilities can be overcome through adaptive strategies by KKN students who provide alternative reading access. Thus, the literacy KKN program is effective in fostering a reading culture and has the potential to be sustainable through the strengthening of facilities and community collaboration.

Abstract

Waste has become a serious issue in Indonesia, including in Surabaya Utara Village, East Lombok, where most household waste is still burned or openly dumped. To address this problem, the KKN PMD team from the University of Mataram carried out a socialization and training program on July 31, 2025, introducing two main innovations: Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot cultivation to process organic waste into nutritious animal feed, and the production of recycled pillows from plastic waste. The activity was attended by 22 participants and conducted through presentations, hands-on practice, and discussions. The results showed high enthusiasm from the community, with several participants expressing interest in developing these initiatives into small-scale businesses. This program not only raised awareness and improved waste management skills but also opened up new economic opportunities for the villagers, while supporting environmental cleanliness and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the village level.

Abstract

The Community Service Program (KKN PMD) of Universitas Mataram was carried out in Terong Tawah Village, Labuapi District, West Lombok Regency, with the aim of strengthening the village’s literacy culture through the revitalization of the As-Suhada Community Reading Park (TBM). The background of this program lies in the low literacy level of the community, the suboptimal management of TBM, and the limited participation of residents in reading activities. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a participatory approach through observation, interviews, documentation, and students’ reflective notes. The results show significant changes in TBM management through the cataloguing and reorganization of 1,000 book collections and the issuance of membership cards. Interactive literacy programs also proved effective. In the Cerdas Mengulas Buku activity, involving 21 fourth-grade students at SDN 3 Terong Tawah, 20 students successfully answered comprehension questions, while one required further assistance. In the Writing Stories Based on Reading program, attended by 25 sixth-grade students, writing scores improved from 60–70 in the pre-test to 75–90 in the post-test after remedial guidance. Furthermore, the Read Me a Book and Reading Aloud activities engaged 30 kindergarten students of As-Suhada and 30 preschool students, fostering reading interest and confidence. Overall, interactive literacy programs such as Cerdas Mengulas Buku and Writing Stories Based on Reading proved to be effective models in enhancing children’s reading interest, comprehension skills, and writing creativity. For sustainability, village institutional support, the diversification of reading collections, and the empowerment of local literacy cadres are needed so that Terong Tawah can develop into an inclusive and sustainable literacy village.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of a literacy program initiated by the National Library of Indonesia (Perpusnas) through the Community Empowerment Village Service-Learning Program (KKN PMD) in Marong Village, East Praya District, Central Lombok Regency. The main focus of this research is to increase the reading interest of elementary school students who have long faced limited reading facilities, minimal learning assistance, and low community awareness of the importance of sustainable basic literacy. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling techniques, in which data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving teachers, the managers of the Community Reading Park (TBM) Semeton Bace, village officials, parents, and students. The findings show that literacy activities, including school literacy visits, book-based project development, optimization of the role of TBM, improvement and decoration of reading facilities, as well as literacy competitions, have succeeded in increasing reading enthusiasm as well as collective community awareness. Supporting factors include the availability of engaging illustrated books, intensive mentoring by university students, and active promotion of TBM as an alternative learning space. Nevertheless, the sustainability of the program requires a long-term commitment from schools, TBM, and village governments to ensure that literacy culture can be maintained. The study highlights that multi-stakeholder collaboration and the implementation of creative literacy strategies are effective solutions to address low reading interest among rural children while also building a foundation for sustainable community education.

Abstract

The majority of the residents in Dara Kunci Village rely on the agricultural sector. Maize serves as the primary commodity in alignment with the national food security program. However, only the kernels are utilized, while the cobs remain as agricultural waste. In fact, maize cobs contain substances that can accelerate the growth of mushrooms. Therefore, the Community Service Program (KKN) team from the University of Mataram (UNRAM) initiated a training program on the utilization of maize cobs as mushroom cultivation media, aiming to reduce agricultural waste and develop economically valuable products. Furthermore, it is expected that the people of Dara Kunci Village will be able to implement this mushroom cultivation independently. The applied methodology consisted of two stages, namely surveys and observations, as well as training. The activities were carried out in accordance with the proposed methods. During the training, all stages of mushroom cultivation using maize cobs were explained in detail, including critical aspects that required particular attention. Prior to the training, the team had already cultivated mushrooms as a demonstrative example, proving that this waste utilization is indeed beneficial. In doing so, the team was able to highlight factors that may inhibit mushroom production and provide appropriate solutions to address such issues. Moreover, following the training, several community members successfully cultivated mushrooms within the expected growth period.

Abstract

The low reading interest among children in rural areas such as Teniga Village, North Lombok Regency, poses a serious challenge in strengthening literacy culture in the aftermath of the 2018 natural disaster. This article discusses the implementation of the CERIA method (Storytelling, Expressive, Imagination Stimulation, Interactive) in a non-formal tutoring program conducted by students of the Community Service Program (KKN) from the University of Mataram. The method is designed to create a joyful, active, and contextual learning atmosphere through approaches based on storytelling, creative expression, imagination stimulation, and interactive activities. The program was carried out over four weeks at Taman Pecatu (Pecatu Park) and local elementary schools, with the active participation of school-aged children. Evaluation results indicated a significant increase in attendance, children’s engagement, as well as their ability to produce literacy works such as rhymes, poems, and speeches. The program achieved an average success rate of 82.6%, demonstrating that the CERIA method is effective in enhancing children’s reading interest. Therefore, this approach is recommended for application in other regions facing similar literacy challenges.
