Abstract

Interpretation methods are generally divided into four types, namely tahlili, ijmali, muqaran, and maudhui. However, beyond these general methods, each interpreter, or mufasir, has their own unique perspective when interpreting the Quran, known as manhaj al-khash or the interpreter's special method. This research aims to discuss Ibn Ashur's manhaj al-khash in writing his exegesis, At-tahrir wa at-Tanwir. This study uses a qualitative research method based on literature review. The primary source in this research is Tafsir At-tahrir wa at-tanwir Juz 27, while the secondary sources refer to books, texts, and articles related to the research theme. The results of this study indicate that there are at least fifteen manhaj al-khash of Ibn Ashur in writing his exegesis, pertaining to the methods of using interpretation sources as well as the writing methods in his exegesis.

Abstract

This study examines the significant role of Tafsir Tarbawi in the development of Islamic education in Indonesia. Tafsir Tarbawi not only serves as a source of values but also as an epistemological and theological foundation for building Islamic education concepts and theories. Despite the significant role of Tafsir Tarbawi, there are still fundamental questions regarding its nature, validity, and acceptance within the academic community. The objectives of this study are to understand the definition and relevant verses of Tafsir Tarbawi, identify key Tafsir Tarbawi scholars in Indonesia, and comprehend the characteristics and approaches of Tafsir Tarbawi. The research method used is a qualitative study with a descriptive-analytical approach through literature review, referring to books, articles, and journal entries related to Tafsir Tarbawi. The results of the study indicate that Tafsir Tarbawi is a systematic study of Qur'anic exegesis that investigates the concepts of Islamic education, including definitions, objectives, methods, media, evaluation, and management. Key Tafsir Tarbawi scholars in Indonesia include Prof. Dr. H. Abuddin Nata, MA., among others. The characteristics of Tafsir Tarbawi are evident in the exegesis approach that views tafsir from an educational perspective. This study is expected to enhance understanding of the role of Tafsir Tarbawi in Islamic education and address the challenges and opportunities that may arise in the future.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of majāz mursal in QS. al-‘Ankabūt [29]: 41 as a rhetorical strategy in the construction of Qur’anic meaning. The verse presents a parable comparing those who associate partners with Allah to a spider building its house, where the spider’s web symbolically represents a fragile and unreliable system of dependence. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach with rhetorical and semantic analysis, this research explores the form of majāz  mursal maḥalliyyah in the verse's linguistic structure and the symbolic function of the spider’s house in conveying theological critique of polytheism. The primary data, drawn from the Qur’anic text, is analyzed using classical balaghah theory and contemporary Qur’anic rhetorical frameworks. The findings reveal that majāz  mursal in this verse not only enhances linguistic aesthetics but also serves as a central instrument in communicating implicit existential and spiritual messages. The metaphor of the spider’s house effectively evokes the reader’s awareness of the frailty of all forms of reliance other than on Allah. This study affirms that figurative language in the Qur’an operates as a powerful vehicle of divine communication rather than merely a literary embellishment.

Abstract

Abstract

This study conducts a critical-comparative analysis of Tafsir Al-Manar and Tafsir Al-Maraghi, both of which share the Adabi Ijtima'i (Social-Cultural) style, to uncover the root cause of their differences ('illat al-ikhtilaf) in responding to modernity. Using a qualitative approach with the muqāranah (comparative) method and content analysis, this research examines methodological aspects and substantive interpretations of three key verses: Q.S. Yunus [10]: 100 (reason), Q.S. An-Nisa' [4]: 59 (politics), and Q.S. An-Nisa' [4]: 34 (family). The findings reveal that despite sharing a basic style, the two commentaries exhibit systematic divergence. Al-Manar, dominated by bil ra'yi (70%) and an Islahi-Siyasi (Reformist-Political) tendency, produces transformative and polemical responses. In contrast, Al-Maraghi, dominated by bil ma'tsur (60%) and a Tarbawi-Ilmi (Educational-Scientific) tendency, produces stabilizing-educative responses. This study concludes that the primary 'illat al-ikhtilaf lies in the interaction between the Tsaqofah al-Mufassirin (the intellectual-institutional framework of the exegetes) and their historical context. Al-Manar, a product of Salafi-Activist Tsaqofah in the Early Modern era, advocates for transformative-political tajdid (renewal). Meanwhile, Al-Maraghi, a product of Azhari-Institutional Tsaqofah in the Middle Modern era, advocates for stabilizing-educative tajdid. Thus, this study not only maps the differences but also contributes to the science of tafsir by introducing Tsaqofah al-Mufassirin as an analytical framework and two models of renewal (tajdid) born from the Adabi Ijtima'i style.

Abstract

This article examines M. Quraish Shihab's interpretation of Quranic verses related to women's reproductive health, specifically the themes of menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, in his Tafsir al-Misbah. These four themes were chosen because they represent important phases in the female reproductive cycle that have direct implications for physical, psychological, and social health. Using a thematic interpretation analysis approach, this study finds that Quraish Shihab emphasizes the balance between the normative values of the Quran and the practical needs of modern life. On the theme of menstruation, he emphasizes the wisdom of sharia that maintains women's hygiene and health. In discussing pregnancy and childbirth, Quraish highlights the difficult struggles of a mother as a form of respect for women's roles. Meanwhile, on the theme of breastfeeding, he emphasizes the importance of children's rights as well as the moral obligation of fathers and the community to provide support. The relevance of Quraish Shihab's interpretation shows that the Quran pays significant attention to women's reproductive health issues, not only within a biological framework but also within ethical, social, and family contexts. This article contributes to demonstrating how contemporary interpretations can serve as a reference in formulating discourse on women's reproductive health and justice in the modern era.

Abstract

This article explores the critical role of Dilalah Jumlah Ismiyyah (implications of nominal quantity) and Dilalah Jumlah Fi'liyyah (implications of verbal quantity) in the profound interpretation of the Holy Qur'an. As the foundational text of Islam, the Qur'an necessitates a comprehensive linguistic and rhetorical understanding to fully grasp its spiritual and practical guidance. We argue that analyzing the quantitative nuances within nominal (ism) and verbal (fi'il) structures is indispensable for unveiling the divine messages. The study delves into how the singular or plural usage of nouns and verbs influences meaning, conveying concepts ranging from God's absolute oneness to the collective responsibilities of humanity. Furthermore, it highlights the intricate relationship between Ismiyyah and Fi'liyyah, demonstrating how they mutually reinforce semantic depth and rhetorical impact within Qur'anic discourse. By integrating Balaghah (Arabic rhetoric) and considering the broader historical, cultural, and spiritual contexts of revelation, this research proposes a refined approach to Qur'anic exegesis. Ultimately, a meticulous examination of quantitative dilalah enriches our comprehension of the Qur'an's multifaceted meanings and its timeless ethical and moral teachings.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the interpretation of Kursi in Ayat al-Kursi through a comparative analysis of Muʿtazilah, Asyʿariyah, and Maturidiyah exegesis. The study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical and comparative method. This approach is chosen to understand the meaning of the verse by comparing the interpretive tendencies of exegetes belonging to three different theological traditions. The research data are qualitative in nature, not statistical or numerical. The primary sources for this study are al-Kashshaf ʿan Ḥaqaʾiq Ghawamiḍ al-Tanzil wa ʿUyun al-Aqawil fi Wujuh al-Taʾwil, Anwar al-Tanzil wa Asrar al-Taʾwil, and Madarik al-Tanzil wa Ḥaqaʾiq al-Taʾwil. Secondary sources include scholarly references related to the topic, such as articles, books, documents, and others. Data collection was conducted through documentation, while data analysis involved the stages of data inventory, data classification, and data analysis. The three Islamic theological schools Muʿtazilah, Ashʿariyah, and Maturidiyah share the same stance in rejecting anthropomorphic interpretations of the term “kursī” in the Qur’an, although they differ in their degree of acceptance of its literal meaning. The Muʿtazilah  interpret “kursī” entirely metaphorically as a symbol of God’s power and knowledge, rejecting any literal meaning in order to safeguard pure monotheism. The Asy’ariyah take a moderate position: they accept taʾwil while also allowing the possibility of a literal meaning without implying resemblance between God and His creation. Meanwhile, the Maturidiyah combine elements of both Muʿtazilah and Asy’ariyah theology, affirming “kursī” as a representation of God’s knowledge and power without implying any physical or material attribute.
