Abstract

This research stems from the low utilization of local potential-based biology learning resources in schools, despite their importance in deepening biological understanding, shaping student character, and fostering environmental awareness, amid growing challenges like resource exploitation, land use change, and climate change. This study aims to assess how effective biology learning resources based on local potential affect student attitudes and learning outcomes by conducting a systematic literature review and meta-analysis using the PRISMA method on articles published between 2013 and 2024. The main data source came from Google Scholar, focusing on articles discussing the utilization of local potential as a learning resource. The uniqueness of this method lies in the categorization of articles based on dependent variables, namely student attitudes and learning outcomes. The data were analyzed descriptively for attitude variables and quantitatively using Cohen's d formula to measure the effect size on learning outcomes for articles with adequate data. The results of the analysis showed that local potential-based learning significantly impacted positively on students' attitudinal changes (including environmental awareness and conservation) and improved cognitive learning outcomes, as seen from high N-gain and effect size values. These findings support the application of contextual and constructivist approaches that are in line with the Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes the importance of strengthening character and sustainability. In conclusion, learning resources based on local potential can improve learning quality and shape students with character and environmental awareness, while strengthening empirical evidence on contextual biology education and learning based on local wisdom.

Abstract

Problem-solving skills are an essential aspect that learners must have to deal with complex problems in real life. However, various studies show that students in Indonesia still have a low level of ability in this aspect. This study aims to measure the improvement of problem-solving skills through the application of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) based on Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) on the topic of environmental change. This study uses a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 34 students of class XI MIPA 1 at SMAN 1 Banjarmasin for the 2025/2026 school year. Sample selection was carried out by total sampling technique. The post-test results showed that the students' problem-solving skills were in the good category, with an average of 83.15%. MANOVA's analysis produced a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05) which confirms that SSI-based PBL has a significant influence on improving problem-solving skills while fostering students' awareness of environmental conservation efforts. The findings of this research are expected to be a practical guide for educators in designing learning that is able to foster problem-solving skills as one of the competencies of the 21st century.

Abstract

The quality of agriculture is affected by insects in agricultural areas. Both insects that have a negative impact such as pests, positive such as predators against pests, and those that are neutral or have no effect on agriculture, but can be an indicator of the ecosystem. Control of plant pest organisms (PPO) is often done by spraying pesticides, but also results in a decrease in the population of insect predators of pests. The diversity of flying insects in Haturak farm, Kupang Village, Tapin Regency has not been documented. This study aims to identify the types of flying insects on Haturak farm and analyze their ecological role. The research method used was a descriptive and observational approach. Data were collected through total roaming and direct documentation using macro photography in the insects’ natural habitat. Analysis was done descriptively and reinforced with literature studies. The results of the study found 18 species of flying insects from six orders. Eight species played a positive role, while ten species had a negative impact on agriculture. Among them, two species played both positive and negative roles, and two others had a neutral role. This condition is less favorable for agriculture because there are fewer predatory insect species than pests. For the sake of biological pest control, enriching pest predator species is recommended to reduce land damage due to high or frequent chemical use. Further studies on diversity and abundance indices are recommended to understand the territorial dominance of each species, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of biological control. Collaboration between Biology Education and farmers through ecological education builds synergy between science and sustainable farming. The five initiatives enhance ecological literacy and apply local wisdom. To maximize impact, it is recommended to integrate these programs into regular academic and community service activities, ensuring long-term engagement and measurable outcomes.

Abstract

The need for science teaching materials that effectively foster HOTS remains unmet, as most existing resources focus only on lower-order cognitive levels. Furthermore, no comprehensively validated materials, covering content validity, reliability, and statistical significance, are yet available to ensure the effective integration of HOTS indicators. This study aims to develop Science teaching materials based on Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) for the topic of classification of living things for Junior High School (JHS) students. The low attainment of students' higher-order thinking skills, characterized by the lack of HOTS material integration in currently available teaching materials, indicates a significant gap between curriculum demands and current instructional practices. The development of these teaching materials is necessary to address this problem and provide a scientific contribution in the form of a tested instrument to improve the quality of Science learning. The research employed the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), which was reduced up to the Develop stage. The trial subjects included material experts, instructional design experts, Science teachers, and Grade VII students. Data collection techniques were carried out through expert validation, using quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis. The validation results show that the teaching materials are highly valid with an average score of 3.72 out of a 4-point scale and a Cronbach’s Alpha reliability value of 0.91, indicating high internal consistency.

Abstract

Fishing activities in river ecosystems occur year-round with seasonal variation, yet information on fish species, species interactions, and environmental conditions remains limited. Understanding these dynamics can enrich contextual biology learning in zoology, animal behavior, ecology, and environmental studies. This research aims to inventory fish species and their associations based on catches made by visiting anglers, highlighting local potential for biology learning. A descriptive exploratory design was used through observation, unstructured interviews, and literature review. Data were collected along the river flow of Karang Indah Mandastana Village, Barito Kuala District, over one month (late April and early July). A total of 162 individuals were recorded from five species: Anabas testudineus (67.9%), Rasbora aurotaenia (13.0%), Channa striata (8.0%), Rasbora argyrotaenia (7.4%), and Belontia hasselti (3.7%). Anabas testudineus was found at all observation points and dominated catches during calm or stagnant conditions, whereas Rasbora species dominated during stronger currents associated with morning tides. Species associations were influenced by tidal patterns and current presence. A positive correlation occurred between aquatic vegetation density and fish abundance (Spearman’s ρ = 0.53, p < 0.05), especially for Eleocharis dulcis (ρ = 0.74) and Hymenachne amplexicaulis (ρ = 0.68). Vegetation patches along riverbanks were associated with higher fish frequency. Findings also suggest that Anabas testudineus moves into nearby rice fields during high tides, indicating adaptive behavior to hydrological variation. These ecological patterns shaped by tides, currents, and vegetation show strong potential as contextual biology learning resources to increase student engagement and strengthen environmental relevance.

Abstract

River water quality is vital to life, but anthropogenic activities have caused significant degradation, threatening aquatic ecosystems and clean water supplies. Although bioindicators have long been used to monitor river health, there has been no bibliometric review to analyze trends and research gaps in this field. Therefore, this study aims to address this gap by conducting a bibliometric analysis of publications on animals as bioindicators of river water quality. The method used is a bibliometric review using data from the Scopus database (2020–2024), analyzed using VOSviewer to visualize the co-occurrence of keywords, as well as a descriptive analysis of publication trends, journals, and fields of study. The results show a significant increase in publications since 2020, with Ecological Indicators and Science of the Total Environment as the leading journals, and Environmental Science as the dominant field of study. Co-occurrence analysis identified three main research clusters: ecology and communities, physiological responses to pollutants, and heavy metal contamination. In conclusion, the use of animals as bioindicators has a strong theoretical basis and offers an integrated approach to water management such as river. Further research is recommended to focus on developing more sensitive methods and toxicity studies to provide more accurate and actionable information.
