Abstract

Palatoschisis is a congenital craniofacial anomaly with significant clinical and social implications, particularly in developing countries where prevention and management efforts continue to face numerous challenges. This study aims to systematically review the scientific literature on risk factors, early detection methods, and management approaches for palatoschisis. A systematic literature review was conducted based on ten scholarly articles published in the past ten years, sourced from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria consisted of articles in English or Indonesian that addressed the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of palatoschisis. Thematic analysis was applied to categorize findings into key thematic areas. The review identified major risk factors including genetic mutations (e.g., IRF6 and MSX1), micronutrient deficiencies (folate and vitamin A), and exposure to teratogenic substances such as tobacco and pesticides. Early detection using 3D ultrasound was found to be effective for prenatal identification. Optimal management requires a multidisciplinary approach involving surgical intervention, speech therapy, and psychosocial support for both the child and their family. The study concludes by underscoring the importance of cross-sector collaboration in promoting comprehensive prevention and management strategies, as well as the need to ensure equitable access to healthcare services and public education to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by palatoschisis.

Abstract

Reproductive health is an important aspect influenced by the daily habits of college students. This study aims to analyze the influence of daily habits on the reproductive organ health of students at Universitas Negeri Padang. A quantitative descriptive survey method was employed using a questionnaire distributed to 30 student respondents. The results showed that the majority of respondents (64.5%) sleep only 5–6 hours per night, 96.7% stay up late between once a week and almost every day, 50% rarely consume balanced nutritious meals, and 61.2% exercise only 1–2 times per week. These habits correlate with reproductive disorders such as irregular menstrual cycles (32.2% occasionally irregular), moderate to severe dysmenorrhea (43.3%), and urinary tract infection symptoms (19.9%). This study concludes that poor sleep habits, unbalanced diet, high stress levels, and low physical activity significantly contribute to reproductive health disorders among college students.

Abstract

Abstract

Consumers have the right to correct information about the products they consume. One example of a food product that is vulnerable to counterfeiting is chicken nuggets. To overcome this problem, qPCR can be an effective solution. Previous research has designed primers targeting the chicken ND5 gene. However, the PCR conditions for this primer pair have never been optimized. This research aims to optimize qPCR conditions and carry out chicken nugget authentication trials. Genomic DNA was isolated from five weight variations of chicken meat samples as a qPCR standard curve and three chicken nugget samples. Optimizing the annealing temperature with gradient PCR gave the best results at a temperature of 57.6OC. The results of the authentication test showed that the chicken meat content in TD nuggets was 54.7%, C nuggets 43.8%, and D nuggets 37.3%. This value is still in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard (SNI).

Abstract

The high production of catfish (Clarias sp.) requires a sustainable seed supply, which is frequently constrained by the asynchronous gonad maturity of broodstock. Sperm preservation using young coconut water as a natural extender and glycerol as a cryoprotectant offers a viable solution to address this limitation. This study aimed to analyze the interactive effects of extender formulations and storage temperatures on the viability of catfish spermatozoa after four days of preservation. Semen was extracted by stripping from a single mature male broodstock weighing 3,000 g. The experiment employed a two-factor factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD). A total of 30 experimental units consisting of 0.2 mL microtubes were used, including 27 units for the factorial treatment combinations and 3 unreplicated control units (100% young coconut water), with one control assigned to each storage temperature. The factorial treatments consisted of two factors with three replications: extender formulation (P1: 75% young coconut water + 25% glycerol; P2: 50% young coconut water + 50% glycerol; and P3: 25% young coconut water + 75% glycerol) and storage temperature (27°C, 5°C, and −20°C). Sperm viability was evaluated using 1% eosin staining and analyzed by two-way ANOVA (α = 0.05). The results showed that storage at 27°C and −20°C caused complete spermatozoa mortality (0% viability) across all extender treatments and the control. In contrast, storage at 5°C produced the highest sperm viability in treatment P1 (82.88%), followed by P2 (65.38%), while P3 and the control exhibited 0% viability. In conclusion, the combination of young coconut water and glycerol stored at 5°C effectively maintained the viability of catfish spermatozoa, with the formulation containing 25% glycerol (P1) identified as the optimum treatment for short-term preservation.

Abstract

Local community knowledge about the utilization of plants in traditional ceremonies is a cultural heritage that is vulnerable to extinction due to modernization. Koto Malintang Village, located in the Lake Maninjau area, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, still strongly adheres to customs and traditions but has not been scientifically documented regarding the use of plants in its traditional ceremonies. This study aimed to identify the plant species, plant parts used, and how they are utilized in traditional wedding ceremonies in Koto Malintang Village. This descriptive research with qualitative and quantitative approaches was conducted from December 2025 to April 2026. Data collection was carried out through semi structured interviews with 20 key informants consisting of panghulu, bundo kanduang, niniak mamak, community members involved in ceremonial processes, and elders, as well as direct observation and documentation. Data analysis used Use Value (UVs), Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC), and Plant Part Value (PPV). The results found 35 plant species from 20 families utilized in wedding ceremonies. The Zingiberaceae family was the most dominant. Leaves had the highest percentage of utilization (29,27%). The highest UVs value was found in turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa L.) at 3,50 and the highest RFC value was found in betel (Piper betle L.) at 1,00. Plants are used as traditional equipment and traditional food ingredients. This study documents the richness of local ethnobotanical knowledge that needs to be preserved and serves as a basis for further research.
