Abstract

This research examined the politeness strategies employed by the protagonist, Iman Syahirah, in Sayang yang Tak Terungkap (2023), a Malaysian Islamic novel written by Muharikah. Using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory through a pragmatic analysis, the study identifies and interprets the characters' expressions within diverse social and professional settings. Using a qualitative descriptive method along with documentation and content analysis techniques, the research identifies and interprets the character's expressions within diverse social and professional settings. The results indicate that Iman Syahirah utilizes all four categories of politeness strategies—positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on-record, and off-record. Positive politeness fosters solidarity and empathy among patients and colleagues, whereas negative politeness indicates caution, respect, and an understanding of social distance. The bald-on-record approach emphasizes professional confidence and ethical power, while off-record reflects delicate communication consistent with cultural and religious awareness. These results suggest that politeness in this Islamic novel serves not merely as a linguistic tactic but also as a representation of gender beliefs, power dynamics, and Islamic principles in the Malay-Islamic community. As a result, this research adds to the domain of literary pragmatics by combining linguistic examination with social context and religious identity in depicting a professional Muslim woman.

Abstract

This article is the result of the community service activity of a team of lecturers and students of Universitas Muslim Nusantara Al-Washliyah from the English literature study program. The purpose of this community service is to share knowledge of the use of linguistic landscape as a medium for English language. Landscape linguistics is a study of language use in public spaces. The program was designed to enhance students’ exposure to English through the strategic use of signs, posters, labels, and educational displays placed in the school environment. The implementation of this program demonstrated that the linguistic landscape could function as an effective, low-cost, and sustainable learning medium. Students showed increased interest and familiarity with English vocabulary and expressions encountered in their daily school activities. Furthermore, the program proved that English language learning can be harmoniously integrated into a religious-based educational setting without disrupting the school’s focus on Qur'an memorization. Through this activity, it is hoped that it will increase the knowledge and insight of the participant.

Abstract

The study investigated the linguistic landscape of downtown looks like in the digital era and how the digital era influenced changes in the linguistic landscape in downtown Medan. This study uses qualitative methods. The data collected consists of written data and the types of media on signboards in the city of Medan. Data analysis was carried out in three steps, namely: 1) data condensation, which is the process of reading the collected data and determining the data, in this case data in the form of writing and types of signboard media, 2) data display, which is displaying selected data in the form of billboards in the central area of Medan, and 3) drawing conclusions, which is finding results after analyzing the data. After analysing data, it was found that 38% signage uses Indonesian, 30% uses English, 27% uses language mixing and the rest, 5% uses traditional language and other foreign languages. Conventional signage has given way to new, more dynamic, and interactive forms thanks to the digital age. These include LED boards, electronic screens, and the incorporation of digital components like social media and QR codes in signboards and advertisement. Digital media forms display more modern language choices, posing a threat to the national language and isolated regional languages in their own countries. The research highlights the linguistic landscape that has emerged in the digital era.

Abstract

Studies related to revisit intention are important, especially in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. At that time, many tourism destinations and businesses were destroyed and tended to close, so a strategy was needed to revive revisit intention at tourist destinations in Indonesia. This study aims to provide a tourism marketing perspective on tour service quality, Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and environmental sustainability (CHSE), tourist satisfaction, and gender. Tourist satisfaction as a mediator and gender as a moderator. This study employs a quantitative approach, data collection with a questionnaire, with a sample of domestic tourists. The study was conducted from June to September 2024, using a questionnaire administered directly via Google Forms. The study included 350 respondents; the sample was determined using purposive sampling. Data have been analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling and Multi-Group Analysis with Smart PLS 3.0. This investigation found that both female and male tourists: tour service quality has a positive effect on tourist satisfaction and revisit intention. Meanwhile, for both females and males, the role of CHSE does not significantly affect revisit intention. Tourist satisfaction has a positive effect on revisit intention. The results of the indirect effect show that tourist satisfaction mediates the effects of tour service quality and CHSE on revisit intention, for both males and females. The moderation effect of gender in the relationship between tour service quality, CHSE, and tour satisfaction has a positive influence, but the relationship is not significant.

Abstract

This community service program aims to empower local wisdom through the implementation of digital storytelling at SMA Sains Plus Tahfidz Qur’an Al-Ammar, an Islamic boarding school integrating Qur’anic values, science education, and character development. The program addresses three main challenges; 1) the limited integration of local wisdom in learning, 2) students’ low academic storytelling skills, and 3) the absence of an integrated digital storytelling learning model. A participatory Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approach was employed, involving teachers and students in workshops, training, and mentoring focused on cultural literacy, storytelling techniques, and digital content production. The methods included needs analysis, capacity building, storytelling training, and the development of digital storytelling videos. The results demonstrate notable improvement in students’ understanding of local wisdom, storytelling competence, digital literacy, and creative expression. Key outputs include educational digital storytelling videos, a practical learning guide, and an integrated digital storytelling learning model. This program contributes to strengthening cultural identity, enhancing 21st century skills, and promoting sustainable, culturally responsive learning within Islamic secondary education.

Abstract

Arthur Miller’s Death of Salesman remains a seminal text in modern American drama, not merely for its narrative content but for its innovative use of dramatic style technique that mirror the protagonist’s psychological breakdown. While the play has been widely analyzed for its themes, less attention has been given to how its structure and style cause those themes to resonate with the audience. This study hypothesizes that Miller’s deliberate use of non-linear narrative (Flashback), expressionistic stage directions, and symbolic language serve as mechanisms to externalize Wily Loman’s mental deterioration and critique the American Dream. This research employs a qualitative, descriptive analytical design focused on close reading. The data source is the original 1949 script of Death of a Salesman. Key technique flashback. Stage direction, tone shifts are identified and analyzed using dramatology theory (Innes, 2000; Elam, 1980) and semiotic analysis (Barthes, 1967). Finding show that 70,6% of scene transitions employ non-linear shifts, especially flashbacks, correlating directly with moments of psychological tension. Dialogue analysis reveals 137 over symbolic references of failure and illusion. Stage direction demonstrate 276 unique-mood setting. Cues that enhance emotional atmosphere were identified 82.3%.

Abstract

This training was held at Universitas Harapan Medan which is located at Jl. Imam Bonjol No. 35 Medan. Based on the results of observations carried out by the service team, several problems faced by students at the university were obtained, especially those related to English. Most of them still don't dare to communicate in English and are still passive when there are activities or competitions held by the campus, such as English debate competitions. English language experts consider English Debate to be very effective when applied to improve speaking. It is hoped that students will be more enthusiastic about participating in English debate training if it is combined with video blog (vlog) media. Video media is a type of audio-visual media. This media can increase students' interest in learning because students can listen and see pictures. Service activities are carried out in three stages. The first stage is the preparation stage. In this stage, the service team carries out a preliminary survey to see the conditions in partners and also look for problems faced by students, especially in terms of English. The next stage is the stage of implementing community service activities. The final stage is the evaluation stage. In this stage, evaluation is carried out on the results achieved by the training participants. Further input and improvements can be made at this stage. Evaluation is provided by collecting data obtained from training activities.
