Abstract

In tropical countries such as Indonesia, high-temperature resistance of asphalt is required to avoid premature damage to road pavement construction. One of the methods to solve this problem is to prepare polymer-modified asphalt. This study aimed to examine the temperature change sensitivity of polymer-modified asphalt using the penetration index value. The polymers used were HDPE, LLDPE, PVC, and styrofoam. Based on the analysis, it was concluded that the conventional asphalt 60/70 used in this study did not satisfy the minimum softening point requirement of 48 °C. With the use of polymers, modified asphalt is produced with a higher hardness than unmodified asphalt. Compared to other polymers, LLDPE-modified asphalt has the lowest penetration index value and is the most sensitive to temperature changes, making it more susceptible to permanent deformation. At all the styrofoam concentrations used, the penetration index was negative, while a positive penetration index value was achieved with 3% and 4% PVC. In HDPE-modified asphalt, the use of polymers has a significant impact and produces the highest penetration index. This indicates that HDPE-modified asphalt is more resistant to temperature changes and exhibits better performance under various weather conditions   In tropical countries such as Indonesia, high-temperature resistance of asphalt is required to avoid premature damage to road pavement construction. Abstract

Flexible pavement construction widely employs asphalt as the primary binding material due to its ability to coat aggregates and form a strong, cohesive structure. However, the growing demand for asphalt and rising prices driven by global oil market fluctuations pose significant challenges to its availability. Therefore, alternative solutions are needed to reduce reliance on pure asphalt while enhancing the performance of asphalt mixtures. One promising alternative is the utilization of waste plastic in the form of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), which has been shown to improve mixture stability, resistance to permanent deformation (rutting), and durability against moisture damage, while also contributing to sustainable waste management. This study aims to evaluate the effect of HDPE addition on the characteristics of Asphalt Concrete - Binder Course (AC-BC) mixtures. Based on the volumetric and mechanical analysis of the AC-BC mixture, adding HDPE increases stability and density with a decrease in VMA and VIM and an increase in VFA. Stability increases significantly up to 12%, but flow exceeds the specification limit at a content of ≥8%, and the Marshall Quotient decreases, indicating a decrease in stiffness. According to the Bina Marga specification (2018), the maximum HDPE content meets the requirements is 4%. A multi-criteria approach is needed to determine the best HDPE content that balances strength, flexibility, and long-term deformation resistance

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to assess the impact of the use of used oil and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic as additives in asphalt mixtures modified with Asbuton on fatigue resistance in AC-BC mixtures. This mixture is designed with an optimal asphalt content of 6.0% and combined with variations in the proportion of modified Asbuton asphalt and oil asphalt. Testing was carried out using the Indirect Tensile Fatigue Test (ITFT) method at a pressure of 500 kPa and at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius to evaluate fatigue performance due to repeated loads. The results showed that increasing the proportion of modified asphalt containing Asbuton, used oil, and HDPE resulted in a significant increasing trend in the fatigue life of the tested specimens. These findings indicate that asphalt modification with a combination of these waste materials can increase the flexibility and resistance of the mixture to repeated loads. This study contributes to the development of more environmentally friendly road pavement materials with better performance.
