Abstract

This study presents an investigation of the use of STEM Project-Based Learning (PjBL-STEM) as a treatment in the experimental class compared to conventional learning in the control class in improving students' critical thinking skills and learning motivation. The focus of the study was Pascal's Law lessons with a special project in the form of developing a simple hydraulic jack. So far, science learning carried out in schools has made students complain, as it is still rote, teacher-centered, unrelated to real-life developments, and rarely integrates technology. This study, therefore, used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design involving 60 ninth-grade students in Pasaman Regency who were evenly divided into control and experimental classes using purposive random sampling techniques. Data was collected through a questionnaire on critical thinking skills and learning motivation, after the implementation of PjBL-STEM. The results demonstrated a significant difference between the two groups, with an independent T-test yielding a value of 0.24 for critical thinking skills and 0.33 for learning motivation. The PjBL-STEM model has been proven to improve student's critical thinking skills with an N-Gain of 0.46 (moderate category) and students' learning motivation with an N-Gain of 0.49 (moderate category).      Keywords: critical thinking skills, learning motivation, Pascal's Law, PjBL-STEM. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i4.pp1976-1999

Abstract

Attitude towards science is one factor that influences student achievement in science learning. Attitude toward science is essential for students, unfortunately, attitude toward science will decrease as the student's grade increases. This research analyzed the attitudes towards Science of Junior High School Students in Indonesia. This research used a survey method. The participants were 1070 junior high school students in Indonesia. The instrument used is a questionnaire and open-ended questions. questionnaire including 40 multiple-choice questions with 4 dimensions. The findings showed the average attitude toward school science (3.18), desire to become a scientist (2.67), the value of science to society (3.60), and perception on scientists (2.89). The average obtained from the four dimensions is (3.08) which means the level of agreement of the student is moderate. Open-ended questions corroborated these results, explaining why students like and do not like science. The three most common reasons students like science are because learning science is fun, studying science will increase knowledge, and often doing experiments. The three most common reasons students don't like science are because science is difficult, has many formulas, and makes them dizzy. The research results show that the average score of students' attitudes toward science is moderate, so teachers are expected to use varied learning models to improve students' attitudes toward science.

Abstract

Experimental activity in learning science allows students to develop critical thinking, active learning, creativity, scientific, and collaboration skills. This study aims to create an alternative experimental design for learning force and motion, which analyzes the kinematics aspect of handmade rubber cars using Tracker. The method used is the R&D method with the ADDIE model to develop the experimental design on the material of force and motion for grade 7 junior high school students. The Tracker application was used to evaluate trial data on handmade rubber cars to calculate the acceleration, force, and time needed by the vehicle with varying the number of rubber turned. Then, to evaluate the experimental design, this study used a questionnaire instrument, and the experimental design was implemented in four classrooms of junior high school students in the seventh grade. The results were examined based on the percentage of students who answered each statement. The kinematics analysis of handmade rubber cars using Tracker shows that the more significant the number of turns given to the vehicle, the more acceleration and force decrease. Meanwhile, the car still travels longer when the number of rubbers turned is higher. This happened because the car took longer to reach maximum speed, and the rubber band detaches when more rubber is turned on. Moreover, the experimental activity of making handmade rubber cars using Tracker was well received by students, as seen from the response questionnaire scores, which were categorized as high. This study suggests that further research can implement different independent variables as the experiment design parameters based on this result. Teachers and other researchers can utilize the developed experimental design as an alternative strategy in learning force and motion topics.

Abstract

This meta-analysis investigates the impact of integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) on Technology Engineering Literacy (TEL) and student learning motivation. The study aims to provide valuable insights for educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers, guiding the design of more engaging learning experiences and supporting innovative educational practices. The research followed a systematic meta-analytic approach, including defining the research problem, setting inclusion criteria, devising a literature search strategy, selecting studies, extracting data, performing statistical analysis, and interpreting results. Analyzing 33 articles from international and national journals, the study reveals that PjBL-STEM significantly enhances TEL, particularly at the high school and college levels, and boosts student motivation, with more pronounced effects observed in high school and college compared to junior high and elementary schools. The model shows a strong impact on TEL in Physics but has lower effects in Science and Biology. For student motivation, significant improvements are noted in Science, Mathematics, and Social Sciences, while effects are less in Chemistry and Physics. The research highlights the effectiveness of PjBL-STEM at higher educational levels and underscores its potential to improve TEL and motivation, though further research is needed to refine adaptation strategies for different educational contexts.

Abstract

The erosion of environmental awareness and the diminishing recognition of traditional knowledge present significant challenges for contemporary education, particularly in Indonesia. This literature review examines the integration of ethnoscience into science education as a strategic response to these issues. Studies conducted between 2020 and 2025 reveal a growing emphasis on embedding local wisdom—such as indigenous agricultural practices and cultural rituals—into science curricula to enhance environmental consciousness and promote sustainable behaviors. A majority of the research focused on students, with senior high school (40%) and junior high school (26.7%) populations being the primary targets. Notably, research output surged in 2024, reflecting increasing academic interest. Ethnoscience-based instructional materials, including e-modules and interactive books, were widely implemented and demonstrated effectiveness in facilitating conceptual understanding while nurturing cultural appreciation. These tools were well-received by both educators and learners. Geographically, the studies spanned diverse regions, including Papua, Surabaya, and Ponorogo, underscoring the broad applicability of ethnoscience in Indonesian education. Although fewer studies concentrated on teachers, findings suggest that incorporating traditional knowledge into science education fosters cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and sustainable development. This approach not only enriches the curriculum but also provides learners with a meaningful, context-driven educational experience rooted in both scientific inquiry and cultural heritage..Keywords: ethnoscience, environmental education, indonesia, systematic literature review, science learning

Abstract

Vibration is one of the essential topics in science education. Pre-service science teachers still often experience difficulties in learning this topic. There are several previous studies related to misconceptions on the topic of vibration. However, research on misconceptions in pre-service science teachers is still limited. This study aimed to analyze pre-service science teachers' misconceptions on the topic of vibration. This research uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The research instruments include a four-tier test and interviews. The participants in this study consist of 96 pre-service science teachers from a university in Bandung, Indonesia. The results of the analysis showed that pre-service science teachers who had Scientific Knowledge were 31.1%, lack of knowledge 26.9%, misconception 8.0%, false positive 1.8%, and false negative 2.2%. The most common misconception found relates to the relationship between frequency and mass. The perception of pre-service science teachers regarding the four-tier test questions is very easy 0%, easy 6.7%, neutral 36.7%, difficult 53.3%, and very difficult 3.3%. The findings show that many pre-service science teachers still have misconceptions about the topic of vibration so lecturers should strengthen the concepts of Fundamental Physics first before students take advanced physics courses.
