Abstract

Although the relationship between student motivation, self-perception, and achievement in science education is well established, there is still a lack of focused studies on these aspects at the lower secondary level, particularly in private school settings where student demographics and learning environments may pose unique challenges. The purpose of this study is to: (1) assess lower secondary students' motivation and self-concept in scientific learning; and (2), using correlational analysis and qualitative feedback, determine ways to improve these aspects. Using a quantitative descriptive survey design, this study assessed 60 grade 7-9 students from a private lower secondary school. The Students’ Motivation Toward Science Learning (SMTSL) and adapted Chemistry Self-Concept Inventory (CSCI) measured motivation and self-concept, respectively. Data analysis included mean scores for both variables and Spearman’s rank correlation (accounting for Liker-scale ordinality and non-normal distributions). A moderate-high level of motivation (Active learning strategies [ALS]=4.0-4.1 highest, Performance Goal [PG]=2.8-3.1 lowest) and self-concept (Positive Perception of Science Self Concept [PSSC]=3.8-3.9 highest, Mathematic Self-Concept [MSC]=2.9-3.2 lowest) with moderate positive correlation (r = 0.572, p < 0.001) underscores that self-concept and motivation are interrelated, suggests interventions should simultaneously promote active learning (to enhance ALS) while addressing mathematical confidence (to improve MSC). These findings suggest that teachers can boost engagement through active learning and confidence-building strategies, while school and policymakers should design targete interventions to support students with low scientific confidence and high performance pressure.

Abstract

Early adolescence is a critical transitional period marked by significant physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes. During this crucial stage, developing social-emotional skills becomes essential to help adolescents adapt to the changes and challenges they face. This study aims to analyze the improvement of social-emotional skills among students by implementing a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model on the Solar System. This study employed a pre-experimental design with a One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Data was collected using a social-emotional skills questionnaire. The study was conducted at a school in Bandung, Indonesia, with 35 seventh-grade students (14 males and 21 females) as participants. The results indicated a significant improvement in students' social-emotional skills, with a mean pre-test score of 74% and a mean post-test score of 77%. The N-Gain scores for Self-Awareness, Social-Awareness, Self-Control, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision-Making were 0.14, 0.12, 0.08, 0.04, and 0.05, respectively. Since all N-Gain scores were below 0.3, they can be interpreted as low. The findings suggest that the PjBL model can serve as an alternative for teachers to enhance students' social-emotional skills, particularly in science education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of project-based learning (PjBL) on students’ motivation in science learning. The participants consisted of 31 eighth-grade students from a public school in Bandung, West Java, comprising 16 male and 15 female students. The research employed a classroom action research design, with data collected through questionnaires and classroom observations. Specifically, students’ motivation was measured using the Students’ Motivation Toward Science Learning (SMTSL) questionnaire, which encompasses six dimensions: self-efficacy, active learning strategies, science learning value, performance goal, achievement goal, and learning environment stimulation. The findings revealed that students’ motivation levels in science learning during Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 were 69% and 68%, respectively, both categorized as “good.” However, the data also indicated a lack of significant improvement in motivation despite the implementation of the PjBL approach. This stagnation suggests that further exploration is needed to understand the underlying factors contributing to the limited impact of PjBL on students' motivational development. Potential areas of inquiry include the quality of project implementation, student engagement dynamics, and contextual factors within the learning environment that may have influenced the outcomes. Abstract

Understanding students' perceptions of socio-scientific issues (SSI), particularly in the context of biology, is essential for developing effective teaching strategies. This study analyzes students’ perceptions of SSI in biology, involving 360 participants from 10th- and 11th-grade classes at a high school in Majalengka, West Java, Indonesia. The participants, aged 16 to 17 years, were equally divided between the two grade levels. Data were collected using a 24-item survey questionnaire based on a five-point Likert scale. The results show an overall mean perception score of 3.31, indicating that students generally hold a neutral perception of SSI in biology. A weak correlation was observed between students’ overall perceptions and SSI in biology, with a p-value of 0.08 and an r-value of 0.02. Further analysis revealed minor differences in perceptions based on grade level and gender, with 10th-grade students scoring an average of 3.30 and 11th-grade students scoring 3.32. Male students averaged 3.28, while female students averaged 3.34. These findings suggest that although students exhibit neutral perceptions of SSI in biology, many struggle to connect biological concepts to real-life contexts. This highlights the need for further research to identify factors influencing students’ perceptions and to explore alternative learning models for improving understanding and engagement with SSI in biology.

Abstract

Many students struggle to understand abstract physics concepts such as magnetism due to limited practical engagement and conventional teaching methods. This study aims to explore the impact of a mini lab and hands-on learning approach to magnetism on students cognitive and critical thinking abilities (CTA). The study employed a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design and was conducted in a junior high school in South Tangerang City, with 25 ninth-grade students serving as research subjects. Learning took place through six mini lab stations presenting different topics, as well as hands-on activities involving the design of a simple compass. Data were collected through cognitive and CTA tests, as well as documentation from the students' worksheets and KWL (know-want-learned) charts. The analysis revealed a significant increase in cognitive abilities, with moderate gain scores. Conversely, the increase in CTA was not statistically significant, with low gain scores. Limited time and inadequate conceptual reflection space were the main factors. These findings suggest that mini labs and hands-on approaches effectively build conceptual understanding, but strategies are needed to optimize the development of students' CTA
