The data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and direct observation. The results show that there is a relationship between language use in various domains and self-identity. As a diaspora community they are very accommodating and show language tolerance to maintain communication and interpersonal relationships. The language convergence is carried out in order to seek approval or social recognition from the surrounding community. It can foster tolerance to build social harmony in the midst of diversity.

Abstract

The translation is a written medium and useful connection to communicate with other people in a different language, culture, and background. Figurative language is widely used in any form of communication, such as in daily conversations, advertisements, articles in newspapers, novels, poems, etc. Figurative language often provides more effective means of saying what can be meant than a direct statement. This writing is aimed at finding out the types of metaphors in translating the novel of Beastly based on the theory of Kovecses. The analysis was presented in the form of words and sentences. The result of this study showed that the use of a structural metaphor was mostly used in this study based on the data in the novel Beastly. The structural metaphor occurred as the source domain provides a relatively rich knowledge structure for the target or language concept.

Abstract

This study is entitled “Translation Shift of Adverbs of Manner in Reference to ‘City of Bones: Mortal Instruments’ by Cassandra Clare”. The aims are to identify the equivalences of adverbs of manner translated into Bahasa Indonesia and to analyze the shift of adverbs of manner in the novel. The data was collected by close-reading to identify the English adverbs of manner and its translation into Bahasa Indonesia found in the novel, highlighting the data found in both of the novels, comparing the data found to find the equivalences in both source and target language, then note-taking the data found to be analyzed afterward. The theories used in this research are the theory of translation proposed by Larson (1984) and the translation theory of shift proposed by Catford (2000). The results show that the English adverbs of manner found were equivalent to prepositions dengan, sambil, oleh, bagaikan, seperti, and secara that were followed with adjective, noun, verb, adjective phrase, noun phrase, verb phrase, or adverb after the preposition. The translation shift that occurred in the translation was category shift, in which the adverbs of manner shifted into an adjective, verbs, and numeral, and another type of translation shift that occurred was a level shift, in which adverbs of manner shifted adjective phrase, the noun phrase, and verb phrase.

Abstract

The research aimed at analyzing the equivalence between the source language and its translations based on the translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). This research focused on the amplification and transposition techniques could be seen on the imperative sentences especially command. The research was conducted by using qualitative method. The data to support this research was taken from an Harry Potter’s novel entitled Harry Potter and The order of Phoenix” in English as source language (SL) and its translation into Indonesian novel as target language (TL). Library research and observation method were used in collecting of data. The technique of collecting data implemented by reading the novel and using note- taking. First step was taking the magazines then reading the novel to carefully understand how the source language (SL) in English were being translated into Indonesian translation in Target Language (TL). The second step was underlining the data of SL which were translated into TL then taking note those data that had been found into a paper or note book. The last step, the selected data were classified based on the objects investigated was techniques of translation. The instruments used were ball point and note book. The translator applied amplification and transposition to produce equivalences when transferring the meaning from the source language (SL) into target language (TL). Therefore, the overlapping translation could be minimized. Amplification had a role especially the addition of information. Some of data showed the phenomena when the detail information did not contain in the source language and the translator must be sensitive by putting the necessary information in target language. Meanwhile, transposition made a shift in translation as follows, structure shift, unit shift and class of shift. It occurred because of the different linguistics factor in SL into TL.

Abstract

Translation is not only a linguistic transfer and transfer of meaning but also a cultural transfer. Although theoretically equivalence can be attained due to the universal nature of language and cultural convergence but the facts show that a language is used by speakers who often have very different culture from other speakers of language so that in the translation process it is difficult to find a synonymous equivalent especially culturally bound expression. This study tries to identify and describe the phenomena of translating culturally bound expression from Indonesian into English as a result of the translation ideology and strategy exercised by the translator. This is a descriptive translation study focusing on objective aspect of the product using unidirectional parallel bilingual corpora based on text-based theory and translator-based theory. The findings show that based on the study of Indonesian fiction with Balinese culture setting translated into English there is an effort to translate the cultural meaning with the strategy of borrowing.

The collected data were analyzed using Katz’s (2009) simple non-parametric statistics and descriptive-interpretatively narrated. The findings show that most employees consider speaking to be the most important skill to function in their routine work because they need to guide, interact and communicate with (potential) customers, in particular, with foreign tourists visiting tourist attractions throughout the Mushroom Bay area, Nusa Lembongan. Concerning the use of English, they mostly employed English for general conversations, for providing services, and for giving information. The challenges they face in using English include inappropriate words and expressions usage in speech, being unable to understand foreign accents, having inadequate vocabulary in reading, and a lack of grammar knowledge in writing. These findings are used as the basis for developing course plans in English language training for small hotel and restaurant employees.
