Abstract

ABSTRACT Hyperpigmentation is a skin problem whose main cause is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) sunlight. Regular use of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and a broad spectrum (protects against UVA and UVB) has been proven to be effective in preventing and treating hyperpigmentation. However, many people do not use sunscreen in the correct way, so its effectiveness in protecting the skin from UV rays is reduced. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of using sunscreen products on the severity of hyperpigmentation in patients at beauty clinics in Surabaya. This research is an analytical, cross-sectional observational study. The results of this study show that there is a significant relationship between the behavior of using sunscreen and the severity of hyperpigmentation, a significance value of 0.014 (<0.05) was obtained. There is a significant relationship between how to use sunscreen and the severity of hyperpigmentation. The better you use sunscreen, the lower the severity of hyperpigmentation, and vice versa. Keywords: How to Use, Sunscreen, Severity, Hyperpigmentation, Patients ABSTRAK Hiperpigmentasi merupakan masalah kulit yang penyebab utamanya adalah paparan sinar matahari ultraviolet (UV).

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Lupus nephritis (LN) is associated with chronic renal failure and a high mortality rate. Tumor growth factor-β (TGF-β) plays a basic part in keeping up immune homeostasis, meanwhile extensive oxidation of the lipid membrane in LN causes the arrangement of malondialdehyde (MDA). Up to date, the mechanism of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy in LN has not been elucidated well. Hence this study was conducted to assess the impact of HBO therapy on TGF-β and MDA expression in the pristane-induced LN mice model.METHODS: Thirty-two mice aged 8-12 old weeks were isolated into 4 groups: normal saline-injected mice (group 1); pristane-injected mice (group 2); as well as pristane-injected followed by HBO-exposured with 2.4 (group 3) and 1.5 (group 4) atmosphere absolute (ATA) pressure. Pristane were injected intraperitoneal to initiate LN. Two months after pristane injection, the mice were placed within 24 hours in the special cage for metabolic examination to determined that pristane-induced LN mice model was successfully formed and marked by the occurring proteinuria. Oxidative stress was assessed by examining MDA, while systemic inflammation was assessed by examining by TGF-β. MDA and TGF-β serum were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).RESULTS: A significantly lower (p<0.050) MDA expression was found in group 3 in comparison with group 2. The results also showed that TGF-β level was significantly increased (p<0.050) in group 3 compared to group 2.CONCLUSION: HBO therapy ameliorates inflammation in LN by diminishing MDA and expanding TGF-β levels through activating antioxidants.KEYWORDS: lupus nephritis, hyperbaric oxygen, malondialdehyde, tumor growth factor-β

Abstract

Introduction: Stroke is the fifth leading cause of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in the world. Cognitive impairment is one of the disabilities found in the acute phase of stroke and persists in long-term outcomes which can be assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). However, a clinical classification to predict the cognitive outcome remained unclear. This study is aimed to identify differences of MMSE results in stroke patients between right and left hemisphere lesions to ensure the mentioned location classifications may contribute to cognitive outcome prediction.Method: With the cross-sectional analytic observational design, 32 acute phase patients hospitalized in the Neurology Department Soetomo General Hospital from October–December 2019 were assessed using the Indonesian version of MMSE with purposive sampling and analyzed using the chi-square test.Result: There was no significant difference between MMSE scores in right or left hemisphere lesion. This might happen because (1) MMSE was insensitive and not a domain-specific test; (2) a more specific infarct location was needed to predict cognitive outcome post-stroke, including microarchitecture of the brain especially those involved in the cortico-striato-thalamocortical loop. Conclusion: The right or left hemisphere lesion classification did not contribute significantly to predict cognitive impairment.

Abstract

Introduction: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), an acute complication of type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus (T1DM), can be precipitated by infection. Procalcitonin (PCT) is an accurate marker of bacteremia, sepsis, and inflammation, however white blood cells (WBC) are still often used by clinicians. We aimed to analyze PCT levels and WBC counts in children with DKA.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia, between 2015 and 2019. T1DM and DKA diagnosis was based on the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes. PCT levels and WBC counts were measured in samples from patients with and without DKA, and were compared using the Mann-Whitney test. Results: A total of 41 samples were included, with 15 samples (36.6%) from children with DKA, and 26 (63.4%) from children without DKA. PCT levels and WBC counts were significantly higher in those with DKA (p less than 0.001). The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of WBC was lower than PCT (0.849 vs. 0.982). PCT had a higher sensitivity and spesificity as an infection marker than WBC (93.3 vs. 86.7; 92.3 vs. 88.5, respectively). Conclusion: PCT is a better infection marker in children with DKA than WBC

Abstract

This study determined community knowledge, attitudes, and practices after COVID-19 socialization in Rambipuji and Suci Village, Jember District, East Java, Indonesia. This study used the analytic observational design study. As many as 40 people were given socialization about COVID-19 by gathering and online. The questionnaires were completed in two parts included before-socialization and after-socialization. The questionnaire data were analyzed descriptively by calculating frequency, percentage, and inferential statistics by t-test, Spearman correlation, and chi-square test. The data analysis used IBM SPSS version 23 software. The mean and standard deviation of percentage of knowledge pre-test, knowledge post-test, high attitude, moderate attitude, low attitude, very high practice, high practice, sufficient practice, and low practice were 58.33 ± 30.97, 77.70 ± 22.52, 62.5±21.7, 31±22.2, 6.5±17.1, 65±13.8, 32.3±13.8, 1.25±2.4, 1.25±1.8, respectively. Knowledge pre-test and post-test correlated 0.819 (p=0.001) and a t-test with p=0.003. Attitudes and practices correlated with p=0.001. Socialization of COVID-19 was useful to improve the community knowledge, attitudes, and practices in Rambipuji and Suci Village, Jember District, East Java, Indonesia that could prevent the transmission and inhibit the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Furthermore, continuous encouragement of COVID-19 socialization in wide areas was recommended.

Abstract

Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) remains a major global health issue,[-10pc]AU: Please provide ORCID ID for all authors.[-7pc]AU: Please provide affiliation’s for all authors. with over 250 million people affected worldwide. In Indonesia, HBV prevalence has declined from high to moderate endemicity, but challenges persist due to regional disparities, risk of mother-to-child transmission, and the predominance of B3 and C1 sub-genotype. Despite available preventive measures and diagnostic tools, approximately 90% of cases remain undiagnosed, particularly in low-resource settings, indicating the need for improved screening and control strategies. Therefore, this study aims to conduct preliminary performance tests of KODC hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) (rapid diagnostic test (RDT) prototype) produced by Konimex on serum and whole blood samples. Performance was assessed through sensitivity, precision, specificity, and comparative testing against commercial RDT. The results obtained were visually interpreted by 2 independent readers. KODC HBsAg RDT demonstrated a detection limit of 50 IU/ml in serum and 400 IU/ml in whole blood. Precision testing showed high reproducibility (RSD <3.02%), with no cross-reactivity against other pathogens. Compared with a commercial RDT, it showed equivalent performance in serum and superior specificity in whole blood. In addition, predictive value analysis confirmed excellent accuracy, with Positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) >99% in both sample types. Therefore, KODC HBsAg RDT prototype showed comparable performance to commercial tests with good sensitivity, precision, and specificity, indicating its potential as a practical tool for HBV screening in resource-limited settings.
