Abstract

The impact of the spread of the covid-19 virus on the world of education requires educators and students to be adapted quickly to existing changes. Before the pandemic, the learning activity was original to be held face-to-face directly in the classroom, however, an integrated learning system through the virtual internet network (online learning) must be implemented during the pandemic. The implementation of English learning for students was still done online using WhatsApp. Based on this, the purpose of this study was to investigate students’ perceptions on the use of the WhatsApp application for online learning during the covid-19 pandemic. This study employed quantitative research with a survey method. This study used questionnaire data to collect the data. The results of questionnaire data analysis indicated that 122 of 168 respondents gave a good perception of the use of the WhatsApp application. In addition, the teacher used the features provided in the WhatsApp application, such as messages, voice messages, documents, videos, and images to improve students’ ability and evaluate the extent of students’ ability with the material that had been studied. The conclusion of the study is the existence of the benefits of WhatsApp media that teachers can use for learning English. Because WhatsApp has many advantages that support learning, this application can be used to send text messages, download and upload images, documents, or videos, and send voice messages.

Abstract

Innovative learning can be interpreted as an innovation from conventional learning in terms of facilities, media, and methods. Using a student-oriented approach to innovative learning bas ed on the constructivism paradigm which sees that knowledge is built independently by students through the process of investigation and use of technology. Innovative learning can be realized through several methods such as problem solving (problem-based learning), investigation (discovery learning), research (inquiry learning), and group discussion (project-based learning). Responding to this, the Department of Language and Literature Education (PBS) under the auspices of the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Jambi University is trying to implement case-based and project-based learning. However, in general there are differences between lecturers in translating these learning concepts technically in the classroom. This research focuses on lecturers' understanding related to case-based and project-based learning. The research data was taken using a focus group discussion instrument and analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. Through the results of the study it was found that the lecturers have different understanding of the implementation of cased method in terms of the stages in learning, constraints, and learning outputs. Meanwhile, in relation to project-based learning, the lecturers understand its characteristics in terms of product-based, student-centered learning, and focus of the process.

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to comprehensively investigate the experiences in writing undergraduate theses, the challenges faced, and strategies to alleviate the encountered challenges, of ten EFL student teachers at one higher education institution in Jambi. To collect the data, we employed semi-structured interviews guided by an interview protocol to elicit the participants’ responses. The results of the study, through thematic analysis (Braun & Clark, 2006), indicated that there are four major themes of challenges in writing an undergraduate thesis, including linguistics and writing knowledge issues, psychological issues, media and resources issues, and supervision and time management issues. To cope with those challenges, the participants employed some strategies, such as self-management strategy, technological help, and help from others. This study suggests EFL student teachers identify issues they struggle with in writing their theses. It is necessary so they could find a helpful way to deal with the challenge.

Abstract

Although there have been many studies investigating international students, many of them focused on the students who travel in pursuit of higher education in English countries and/or universities. This current qualitative study is intended to explore the experiences of international students, particularly the challenges, and strategies to deal with the challenges and the culture shock while studying in Jambi, Indonesia. In order to collect the data, a semi-structured interview was employed and guided by an interview protocol to stimulate the participants in answering the questions during the interview. The participants of this study were nine international students who studied at one public university in Jambi. Through thematic analysis, we found that international students faced some challenges living and studying in Jambi, such as language issues, academic issues, individual issues, and living style and related issues. To overcome the challenges, international students employed two main strategies, including self-management strategies and seeking help. Moreover, although the culture of international students is quite similar to the culture of the hosting country, we identified a lack of foreigner sense and physical contact as the culture shocks experienced by one international student. Looking at the challenges and culture shocks experienced by international students, this study suggests that preparation is crucial for prospective international students before pursuing their studies overseas.

Abstract

This present article is mainly concerned with the nature of stance-taking and identity in classroom interaction. The data of the research were taken from the interactions in an English Foreign Language class. Going through the framework of stance triangle (Du Bois, 2007), the author explored the features of stances that are frequently taken in foreign language classroom interactions and the identities enacted from the interactions. The finding of the research suggested that epistemic stance was dominantly taken in the interactions, especially by the students. This unequal distribution of stance-taking is likely to occur due to the teacher’s teaching style and students’ lack of evaluation skill. In addition, the finding indicated that both teacher and students, when they take stances, constructed diverse discourse identities, including speaker, answerer, and evaluator. These diverse identities show that the classroom interactions between teacher and students is fairly communicative and dynamic.
