Abstract

With this study, the researcher also correlated the value(s) to real life and Islamic views. To achieve the research objectives, the researcher employed qualitative research design with descriptive analysis as an attempt to provide an in-depth and comprehensive explanation of the data. The data of this study, gotten from the researcher’s random survey on Primary and Junior High Schools students on January –June 2015, are three selected English fable stories entitled “The Rabbit and the Turtle, The Fox and the Goat, and The Monkey and the Crocodile”. Abstract

The current study aims to find out the EFL learners’ major problems in pronouncing words of English and to explore the potential of AI technologies especially Google Pronunciation as a supportive tool for pronunciation improvement in secondary school settings. It measures the effectiveness of the tool in improving their pronunciation based on the class observation, pre- and post-assessment outcomes and according to the students’ perceptions. The study comprised 6 secondary high school students covering 2 low performers, 2 mediocre performers, and 2 high performers at English Club in one of the schools in Jambi, Indonesia. The participants were intentionally nominated based on their availability and readiness to provide recorded answers for the research purposes. A qualitative-descriptive research method was employed through a deep-interview to examine their major difficulties in pronunciations and their perspectives toward the tool. The results show that the learners’ chief pronunciation difficulties are both in segmental and suprasegmental features namely the sounds of /θ/ and /ð/, past simple sounds, and also stressed syllables. Their overall perceptions towards the use of the tool own more positive impacts as their pronunciation improves. Despite its effectiveness, the instrument is suggested to be used only for basic or standard pronunciation learning. For being natural in English pronunciation, the tool cannot perform much better than human teachers because it has limited accents and its phones sound too formal. Additionally, the tool is expected to advance the technology's adaptability to diverse accents and linguistic backgrounds, ensuring more inclusive and equitable learning experiences for all EFL learners.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore high school students’ challenges in an international conference. The research employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. The participants in this research were four high school students who had presented in one international conference. The researcher used purposive sampling to select the appropriate participants based on the criteria. To obtain data, the researcher interviewed the participants. In analyzing the data, the researcher used thematic analysis. The results of this research indicated that high school students experienced some challenges when presenting their paper in an international conference that was held in Malaysia, which were divided into three themes: language barriers (lack of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation), psychological issues (lack of confidence and anxiety), and performance (lack of preparation). Despite the comprehensive exploration of the topic, this study has some limitations. Firstly, the research solely focused on the experiences of high school students at international conferences. Future studies could explore their experiences in national forums for comparison. Secondly, the study included a relatively small sample size of only four participants. Including more participants in future research could lead to a more nuanced understanding of the challenges faced.

Abstract

The study aims to comprehensively explore thesis supervision from EFL undergraduate students perspectives. To be more specific, the present study investigates the challenges faced by EFL students and the strategies they used to overcome them while under thesis supervision. To meet the purposes of this study, a qualitative research design with a case study approach was used. Data were collected from 10 final-year students using in-depth interviews and audio recording techniques. The results drawn from the thematic analysis (Braun Clarke, 2006) indicates that EFL undergraduate students faced both internal and external challenges. Internal challenges included students lack of motivation, lack of confidence, and poor time management, whereas external challenges were insufficient support from supervisors, supervisors harsh feedback and comments, change of supervisor, and the internet and technology problems. In terms of overcoming strategies, the students mainly utilized the three strategies to cope with their challenges in the process of thesis supervision: 1) self-management (managing the study, self-study, maintaining positive motivation, doing positive and enjoyable activities, and being proactive), 2) academic and peer support (supervisor support, lecturer support, and peer support), and 3) technological support (language application, referencing application, and search for stable connection). These results suggest that the issues pertaining to thesis supervision warrant more attention and have a major influence on students progress in completing theses.
