Abstract

This study attempts to explore the factors and strategies of EFL students' speaking anxiety in answering the lecturer's questions. A qualitative design using a case study method was employed to gather information about individual experiences. This study examined EFL students' speaking anxiety when responding lecturers' questions at a Jambi public university. The researchers selected 10 active EFL students who had finished all courses, were accessible, and eager to engage in this research. The researchers collected data through interviews and supervisor notes. The findings were analyzed thematically. Linguistics and knowledge issues (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and lack of knowledge), psychological issues (fear of making mistakes, lack of confidence, and lack of motivation), and performance issues (lack of preparations, environmental conditions, and time pressure) were identified. This study also found that EFL students reduce anxiety through self-management (practice and preparation, learning from mistakes), self-psychology (relaxation and motivation), and help from others (friends and family).

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of training aimed at enhancing English speaking skills among students at SMAN 6 Betara, Tanjung Jabung Barat, through the Synectics model. The Synectics approach, known for fostering creativity and critical thinking, encourages students to explore abstract concepts and express their thoughts through metaphors and analogies. This method not only promotes language proficiency but also enhances students' confidence and engagement in the learning process. The training program involved interactive activities, structured group discussions, and creative exercises, which allowed students to practice speaking in a supportive environment. Pre- and post-training assessments indicated significant improvements in vocabulary usage, pronunciation, and overall speaking fluency. The findings suggest that the implementation of the Synectics model in language education can lead to more dynamic and effective learning experiences, ultimately contributing to better communication skills among high school students. The study highlights the importance of innovative teaching strategies in language education and recommends further integration of creative methodologies to improve speaking abilities in non-native English contexts. Future research could explore the long-term effects of such training and its impact on students' overall academic performance.

Abstract

Classroom Action Research (CAR) should be one of the competencies that teachers must have. PTK at a more advanced level is a routine activity carried out by teachers in order to improve professionalism through the process of managing rank and class. Scientific work based on Classroom Action Research is a mandatory requirement for civil servant teachers, starting from group III as part of the process of managing rank and class. The reality in the field shows that there are still many teachers who have not fully mastered PTK. In fact, PTK is an obligation for teachers that contributes to promotion, which in turn, supports their professional improvement. The implementation of training in writing PTK is not only useful for fulfilling the requirements for promotion, but can also be used as a provision in solving student learning problems in the classroom.

Abstract

At the university level, critical thinking is an essential yet challenging skill for EFL students. EFL students often face various barriers to developing this skill. The purpose of this study is to explore the factors that influence EFL students' abilities and to investigate the strategies they employ to develop critical thinking skills in academic writing. This study used a qualitative research design with a case study approach while the data was collected through semi-structured interviews with ten participants, specifically eighth-semester students majoring in English at a public University in Jambi. The researcher used purposive sampling to select participants based on specific criteria. The researcher used thematic analysis as a method to examine and interpret the collected data. The findings show that EFL students face several factors that affect their ability to develop critical thinking in academic writing including personal competence factors (lack of topical knowledge), linguistic factors (grammar and vocabulary), and psychological factors (low motivation, lack of self-confidence, and anxiety in supervision),. However, despite these influencing factors, EFL students also apply strategies to overcome challenges when developing critical thinking in academic writing, specifically self-management, technology support, learning atmosphere, support system, and mentorship schedule management. It can be concluded that this research is expected to be useful as suggestions and recommendations aimed to develop critical thinking in academic writing, especially for Indonesian students at the undergraduate level.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the most difficult skills in language learning particularly in learning English as a foreign language. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the issues of speaking anxiety, the factors influencing their speaking anxiety, and the strategies they employed to alleviate the anxiety at one English teacher education program in Jambi, Indonesia. In order to collect the data, a semi-structured interview was employed and guided by an interview protocol to stimulate the participants in answering the questions during the interview. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we only had access to invite 12 students to participate in our study-they were nine male and three female student teachers. To select the participants, we employed purposive sampling with a convenience case strategy. Through thematic analysis (Braun and Clark, 2006), we identified three major themes of factors influencing the participants’ speaking anxiety, including 1) language barrier (Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency); 2) psychological issues (low motivation, and personality); and 3) learning proponents (lecturers, classmates, and unfamiliar topic). To alleviate their anxiety, the participants have undertaken strategies, such as 1) self-management (self-practice and doing positive activities) and 2) getting-help strategies (friends’ help and motivation).

Abstract

A thesis defense examination (TDE) involves the ability to defend the research and to orally explain the thesis. However, it is not easy to do them in front of the examiners. The purposes of this qualitative study are to identify the speaking challenges faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in their TDE and to describe the strategies they employed to deal with encountered challenges. To achieve the purposes, guided by an interview protocol, a semi-structured interview was conducted to elicit the experiences of five EFL students in their thesis defense. Through thematic analysis, we identified two main themes of EFL students’ speaking challenges in TDE, including internal challenges (low self-confidence, limited vocabulary and lack of pronunciation) and external challenges (serious examiners and unpredictable questions). In order to deal with the speaking challenges, the participants employed Self management strategies (taking a deep breath, mixing languages and looking at notes) and confirmation strategies (asking for clarification and asking for repeating questions).

Abstract

The purposes of this qualitative inquiry were to explore EFL learners' challenges in online speaking and their strategies in overcoming the challenges. To collect the data, we employed semi-structured interviews and audio diary to 12 EFL learners who voluntarily participated in our study. Based on data analysis, we identified four interrelated themes and sub-themes about EFL learners' challenges in online speaking classes, such as 1) internet and technology related issues (poor connection and lack of technological knowledge); 2) linguistics issues (limited vocabulary, lack of grammatical knowledge, fluency problem, and pronunciation problem); 3) psychological issues (anxiety, low motivation and insecure); and 4 learning proponents (lack of topical knowledge and unsupportive peers). To overcome those encountered challenges, EFL learners used several strategies, including 1) Self-management (self-practice and being well-prepared); 2) helping from others (asking or having discussion with friends and asking the lecturers); and technological support (taking advantage of entertainment platforms and language applications).
