Abstract

This study examines how British Parliamentary Debate (BPD) is used to enhance English-speaking proficiency among third-year cadets at the Indonesian Police Academy (IPA). Grounded in an interpretivist perspective, it used a qualitative, single-site case study design to explore cadets’ and lecturers’ experiences with debate-based learning in police classrooms context. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis using purposive sampling (34 cadets and 2 English lecturers). The data were analyzed thematically with NVivo 15 and guided by Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis model, comprising data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The analysis highlights 5 interrelated thematic experiences in speaking improvement: initial involvement, emotional response, preparation process, topic relevance, and activity perception. Overall, debate-based learning offers a holistic approach to developing linguistic, cognitive, and affective skills and can be integrated more systematically into police-academy English curricula, particularly when reinforced through regular practice, collaborative peer work, and constructive feedback from lecturers.

Abstract

This systematic review of the literature explored the impact of The British Parliamentary Debate Practice from several studies. The present study focused on the way debate practice enhances students’ English-speaking abilities in an EFL context. The PRISMA method stages to search journal databases was used in this study. However, after an intensive selection process, the researcher found that 11 articles from 3 reputable databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, and Semantic Scholar had the most relevant and suitable content to answer the purpose of this Systematic Review study. The research findings revealed that the implementation of British Parliamentary Debate in English language teaching is highly effective to improve speaking skill. Besides, through this learning method, several aspects such as; linguistic skill, vocabulary, self-confidence, and self-awareness of students at various levels of education can also be increased. The researcher also found that there are learning stages using British Parliamentary Debate that can be adapted by teachers to improve the teaching of students’ speaking skills such as AREL (Argument, Reasoning, Evidence, Link Back) technique. In addition, the current study includes a number of recommendations.

Abstract

This systematic literature review explores the impact of Photovoice on fostering self-expression among English language learners and identifies the key challenges in implementing this participatory visual methodology within classroom settings. Using the PRISMA method, this review analyzes peer-reviewed studies published between 2019 and 2024. A total of 270 articles were initially identified through databases such as Scopus and Google Scholar, with 9 studies selected for thematic analysis focused on self-expression and the integration challenges of Photovoice in English language learning. The findings demonstrate that Photovoice significantly enhances self-expression in students by enabling them to confidently articulate complex emotions and ideas in English, reducing language anxiety, and promoting deeper engagement. However, obstacles such as limited classroom time, inadequate technological resources, and insufficient teacher training were noted as barriers to its effective implementation. This review addresses a critical gap in the literature by focusing specifically on the role of Photovoice in fostering self-expression in English learners, an area that remains underexplored. The study contributes to educational practice by providing educators with insights into how Photovoice can be integrated into language teaching to enhance self-expression, while also highlighting the practical challenges and offering recommendations for overcoming them to maximize the method’s potential.

Abstract

This study investigates the application of differentiated instruction (DI) models in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classrooms at vocational high schools in Palembang, focusing on students’ linguistic and vocational needs. Using a systematic literature review (SLR) following PRISMA guidelines, the research analysed 15 articles from Scopus, ERIC, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. The findings reveal that DI strategies are inconsistently applied, with teachers often facing challenges due to large class sizes, insufficient training, and resource limitations. However, when implemented effectively, DI has been shown to improve student engagement and learning outcomes. The study identifies best practices for enhancing DI in vocational ESP settings, emphasizing the need for curriculum alignment, task variety, and professional development to address the unique needs of vocational students. Recommendations include providing ongoing teacher training and better resources to optimize DI models in such contexts.

Abstract

Writing a thesis is a complex academic process that requires strong critical thinking skills. Consequently, many graduate students struggle to apply critical thinking during thesis writing. This study aims to explore EFL graduate students’ challenges and strategies in developing critical thinking skills in writing theses at Universitas Jambi. A qualitative case study design was employed, involving semi-structured interviews with four Master of English Education students who met the study’s inclusion criteria. The findings reveal three major categories of challenges: personal competence challenges (time management and workload balance), linguistic challenges (structuring and grammar, English proficiency, and source management), and psychological challenges (low motivation, lack of confidence, and writing anxiety). To address these challenges, students employed various strategies, including technological support such as AI and writing tools, time management practices, citation and resource management, and writing practice supported by supervisors and peers.

Abstract

This study examines how debate pedagogy supports the development of English-speaking fluency among third-year cadets in a semi-military law enforcement institution. Guided by an interpretivist paradigm, it adopts a qualitative, single-site case study design focused on the integration of British Parliamentary debates into the English curriculum. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, classroom observation of debate sessions, and document analysis involving 36 purposively selected participants (34 high-proficiency cadets and 2 English lecturers). Data were coded and analyzed in NVivo 15 using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The analysis yielded six interrelated thematic advantages of debate for speaking development: training spontaneous yet structured speaking; refining grammar and pronunciation; expanding topic-relevant vocabulary; strengthening logical argumentation; building confidence in English public speaking; and fostering critical thinking, research skills, teamwork, and active listening. These findings indicate that debate-based instruction effectively enhances cadets’ communicative competence and key soft skills when supported by consistent practice, peer collaboration, and constructive lecturer feedback. The study positions debate as a viable instructional strategy for semi-military academies and offers implications for curriculum design that integrates language development with preparation for contemporary, globally oriented law enforcement roles.

Abstract

This study examines students’ pragmatic competence in using request strategies in English formal and informal letter writing, with particular attention to how learners adjust their linguistic choices according to context, social distance, and power relations. Adopting a qualitative case study design, the participants were twelve undergraduate EFL students who produced one formal and one informal letter containing request expressions. Data were collected through written tasks and supported by follow-up semi-structured interviews with selected participants to clarify pragmatic choices. The written data were analyzed based on Braun and Clarke’s six phases of thematic analysis, with NVivo software employed to support systematic coding and data organization. The analysis focused on patterns of request strategies to explore students’ contextual appropriateness in written communication. The findings indicate that students demonstrated emerging pragmatic competence by differentiating their use of request strategies across formal and informal contexts. In formal letters, students predominantly employed conventionally indirect strategies, particularly query preparatory forms, to show respect and avoid being too direct with institutional authority, although instances of excessive directness were still observed. In informal letters, however, flexibility, emotional expressiveness, and a wider combination of direct and indirect strategies were highlighted which reflected closer social relationships and reduced formality. The results suggest that students are developing their contextual awareness and politeness sensitivity, yet their pragmatic control remains uneven across communicative settings. The study offers the pedagogical importance of integrating explicit instruction on pragmatic features into EFL writing courses to support students’ ability to formulate contextually appropriate requests.
