Abstract

Newton's Law is a basic concept in physics learning at the high school and college levels, but students' conceptual understanding of the concept is still weak.  This study aims to analyze students' difficulties in the concept of Newton's Law by looking at the consistency of students' answers to isomorphic problems. The research method used quantitative research by means of a survey. The respondents were 118 students (58 high school students and 60 MAN students) who had taken the Newton's Law chapter.  The research instruments were adapted from the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) and isomorphic multiple-choice question (IMCI) which were validated by two physics experts. The analysis technique uses isomorphic analysis by looking at the consistency of student answers to the concept of Newton's Law.  Based on the consistency of the answers, three groups of students’ conceptual understanding were determined, namely the “Understanding” when students were consistently correct on three isomorphic items, “Moderately Understanding” if they were consistently correct on two isomorphic items, and “Not Understanding” if only one answer was correct or did not answer correctly on the isomorphic items. The study found that students' conceptual understanding on all isomorphic items was low. especially in Theme 5 which is about the concept of analyzing the relationship between force and the speed of motion of objects with 97.46% of students having difficulties, and Theme 3 with the concept of action-reaction on Newton's Third Law with 95.76% having difficulties. The recommendation for further research is to apply learning methods to overcome students' difficulties in Newton's LawKeywords: Conceptual understanding, newton’s law, Isomorphic question.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpf.v12.n2.202402

Abstract

The results of the PISA Study show that students' numeracy abilities are still below average. So far, students' knowledge is still focused on the concept of counting, without knowing the usefulness and benefits of mathematical concepts in everyday life. This study aimed to develop and validate the AKM numeracy instrument on numbers, geometry, and measurements for Grade IV elementary school students. This research uses the type of  Research and Development (R&D) development research, using the ADDIE model which has 5 stages, namely Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The data collected is data on students' numeracy abilities obtained through testing the AKM instrument on numeracy on numbers, geometry, and measurements specifically for 4th-grade elementary school students. Data content validity, empirical validity, and reliability that has been collected was analyzed by content validity (Gregory, 2000), Product Moment, and Cronbach's Alpha. The results of the assessment of the two validators shows that the numearcy AKM instrument is categorized as having a high validity of 0.70. Based on the results of the descriptive statistical analysis of the Numeracy AKM test, it is known that the mean value is 88, whil minimum numeracy score is 48, and the maximum score is 100 with a standard deviation of 13.81. The reliability test results that the value of rcount > rtable is 0.949 > 0.423. Thus, it can be concluded that the developed numeracy test instrument is valid or has high reliability and can be used to collect research data related to student numeracy. Keywords: Instrument Development Numeracy, Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM)

Abstract

This research examines the global trends regarding applying computational thinking (CT) in physics learning through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. By analyzing 30 selected articles published in 2019-2024, this study aims to provide insight into the types of research, subjects, instruments, physics materials, and supporting media used. The results showed that most studies focused on developing CT-based learning products, such as interactive modules and simulations, which were predominantly applied to high school students with materials such as electricity, temperature, and heat. Frequently used media include Scratch, Arduino, and Visual Python, which are proven to improve students' critical thinking, collaboration, and algorithmic skills. However, CT implementation is faced with challenges such as limited technology facilities, teacher training needs, and the complexity of curriculum integration. This research recommends the exploration of problem-, project-, and game-based learning approaches to support the development of CT at different levels of education. The results are expected to be the basis for developing more innovative and effective learning strategies to face the challenges of the 21st century.

Abstract

Design thinking has emerged as a critical 21st-century competence, yet it remains under-emphasised in Islamic schools, particularly Madrasah Aliyah (Islamic senior high schools). This study investigates the design-thinking mindset of Madrasah Aliyah students studying digital-technology-based physics concepts. Employing a descriptive-correlational design, we used descriptive statistics and Pearson/Spearman correlation analyses to examine relationships among five dimensions of design thinking: (1) Growth Mindset and Endurance, (2) Empathy and Human-Centred Design, (3) Teamwork and Diverse Perspectives, (4) Creativity and Problem-Solving through Prototyping, and (5) Curiosity and Learning Motivation. Data were gathered from 136 students using a validated 25-item questionnaire. Overall mindset levels ranged from moderate to high; Curiosity and Empathy recorded the highest scores, whereas Endurance ranked lowest. Gender- and grade-level comparisons revealed that female students exhibited significantly higher Endurance. Although the cross-sectional design limited insights into developmental trends, a significant negative correlation emerged between Endurance and the other dimensions. These findings highlight the need to balance resilience with curiosity, creativity, and empathy within a design-thinking framework and offer guidance for integrating digital technologies and design-thinking principles into physics instruction while respecting the madrasah cultural context. Future research could explore the impact of interactive digital physics simulations on the development of the five design-thinking dimensions among Madrasah Aliyah students.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze students' conceptual understanding of Newton's Law material by utilizing isomorphic tests. This quantitative descriptive research involved 30 male and 40 female respondents from class X MIPA of a private high school in Malang. Data was collected by survey method using a test consisting of 6 description questions adapted from the FCI instrument. The test, which consists of two groups of isomorphic items, has an inter-rater Cohen's kappa test reliability of 0.730 with a standard error of 0.059. Data analysis was carried out in a quantitative descriptive manner. Research found that students' understanding of concepts is very low. The highest score is given to students who understand the concept quite well. The category is based on isomorphic grouping. Students have difficulty in the implementation of Newton's Law II and Newton's Law III. Students' concept understanding is in the category of moderately understanding the concept. The difficulty experienced by students in the first indicator is that they cannot distinguish between the acceleration and speed of an object and assume that mass can affect the acceleration. In the second indicator, students explained that mass affects the interaction of forces

Abstract

Physics education, particularly in static fluid concepts, often suffers from students' low conceptual understanding due to the limited availability of tailored formative feedback. To address this issue, this study aimed to develop and validate a computer-based interactive-video formative feedback model that supports independent learning and improves students' comprehension of static fluids. Employing the 4D Research and Development model (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate), the study focused on the first three stages and involved 128 high school students. The validity of the media was assessed by content and media experts, yielding high validity scores (97% for content and 93% for media). A practicality test showed an 83% approval rate, indicating strong usability and relevance for classroom and independent use. Effectiveness was further assessed through pretest and posttest analysis using the Wilcoxon and N-Gain tests. Results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in students' conceptual understanding (p 0.001), although the N-Gain value of 0.27 classified the effectiveness as low. Despite this limitation, students responded positively to the interactive format, citing increased engagement and clarity. The novelty of this study lies in integrating isomorphic questions with animated feedback and audio explanations in an interactive video format tailored to students' interests. This research contributes to physics education by offering a practical, validated digital tool that enhances formative assessment practices and provides a foundation for future improvements in instructional media for abstract topics like static fluid.
