Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of gender on the mastery of the concept of graphical representation through the analysis of Test of Understanding Graphs in Kinematics (TUG-K). This research method is a comparative study that aims to compare two or more variables, to get answers or facts whether or not there is a comparison of the object being studied. This research is a qualitative research. The number of samples in this study were 23 people consisting of 8 male students and 15 female students. The research instrument used was 5 descriptive questions referred to from TUG-K Beichner and analyzed by the CRI method. Based on the results of the study, it was found that from the number of students who knew the concept, it was known that 1 out of 8 (1:8) male students knew the concept, and 3 out of 15 (1:5) female students. From this data, it can be seen that female students master concepts more than male students.

Abstract

One essential ability in physics is problem-solving ability. Problem-solving and physics are inseparable. This research aims to reveal how students solve physics problems. This research is quantitative descriptive research, namely describing students' problem-solving abilities in Static Fluid material. This research was conducted on 28 Physics education students at one of the State Universities in East Java. Data was collected through tests and in-depth interviews. The research instrument was two test items on statistical fluid problem-solving. The results show that the students' physics problem-solving abilities are still in the beginner category. Learners need to work on solving problems correctly with incomplete problem-solving aspects. The interviews showed that students' difficulties in the problem-solving process were mainly in determining the physics approach to use and bringing the physics approach to specific conditions. This analysis can help further studies of improving novice physics problem-solving abilities

Abstract

Several studies have been conducted to improve students' representational competence in physics, but a comprehensive review of these efforts is lacking. This manuscript summarizes current knowledge, identifies gaps, and suggests future research directions to improve students' representational competence. A review of 26 scientific articles from 2000 to 2023 in physics education journals was conducted. The findings revealed that (a) a consistent learning approach can improve students' representation competence, (b) constructivist-based learning models show a significant impact on the understanding of various forms of representation, (c) interactive learning media, such as simulations and animations, are more effective than conventional media, and (d) media that integrate local cultural elements have the potential to increase student engagement and understanding. However, the study also found limitations in the development of media that support low-achieving students, the integration of technology into representation learning, and long-term research on the impact of learning interventions. The main implication is the need for a more integrated and technology-based approach to improve representation competence across different levels of students. As a novel contribution, this study recommends the development of Android-based applications for physics representation training, testing the effectiveness of local culture-based media, long-term impact research, and evaluation of user experience and feedback to strengthen future learning designs.        Keywords: representation competence, increased representational competence, next effort, literature review.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i4.pp1906-1924

Abstract

Newton's Law is a basic concept in physics learning at the high school and college levels, but students' conceptual understanding of the concept is still weak.  This study aims to analyze students' difficulties in the concept of Newton's Law by looking at the consistency of students' answers to isomorphic problems. The research method used quantitative research by means of a survey. The respondents were 118 students (58 high school students and 60 MAN students) who had taken the Newton's Law chapter.  The research instruments were adapted from the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) and isomorphic multiple-choice question (IMCI) which were validated by two physics experts. The analysis technique uses isomorphic analysis by looking at the consistency of student answers to the concept of Newton's Law.  Based on the consistency of the answers, three groups of students’ conceptual understanding were determined, namely the “Understanding” when students were consistently correct on three isomorphic items, “Moderately Understanding” if they were consistently correct on two isomorphic items, and “Not Understanding” if only one answer was correct or did not answer correctly on the isomorphic items. The study found that students' conceptual understanding on all isomorphic items was low. especially in Theme 5 which is about the concept of analyzing the relationship between force and the speed of motion of objects with 97.46% of students having difficulties, and Theme 3 with the concept of action-reaction on Newton's Third Law with 95.76% having difficulties. The recommendation for further research is to apply learning methods to overcome students' difficulties in Newton's LawKeywords: Conceptual understanding, newton’s law, Isomorphic question.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpf.v12.n2.202402

Abstract

This study aims to determine the improvement of critical thinking skills of chemistry students through a problem-based learning (PBL) learning model on acid-base titration material. The method used is analytical descriptive research based on categorizing critical thinking skills with the research subject of chemistry education students in a regular class in 2022, consisting of 35 students. Data collection of critical thinking skills using essay tests reveals critical thinking skills in interpretation, analysis, inference, deduction, and evaluation. Research data were obtained from pretest and post-test results. The results showed the lowest N-gain value on the interpretation indicator and the highest on the deduction indicator, with an average N-gain value of 0.59 in the moderate category. This shows increased critical thinking skills after being treated using the PBL learning model.

Abstract

Conceptual understanding and problem solving is the most crucial part of Physics Lectures. In lectures, mastery of the concept is the primary goal. This research aims to analyze students' mastery of physics concepts in the material of Force and Motion while lectures are conducted online. This study uses a mixed-method approach to explain students' answers that still need clarification. Data analysis was carried out using the Rasch model, and a questionnaire was developed based on the possibility of students' responses to the concepts of force and motion. The results of this study indicate that students' understanding of the concept of force and motion material still needs to improve, namely 64.062%, around 94% of glasses tadris students think that the force and motion material given by lecturers during exams is challenging. More than 60.94% of students believe this is because the ability of the force and motion material they have still needs to improve. These results are interpreted based on analysis through the winstep application Version 3.65.0. and for qualitative data obtained from interviews. It takes a learning model that is appropriate for use in online and offline learning.

Abstract

This study aims to explore naturally occurring practices of positive reinforcement in the learning process of Mathematical Physics 2 and their impact on students' motivation and understanding. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews with the lecturer, and student questionnaires. The results show that the most frequently appearing forms of reinforcement included verbal praise, the awarding of additional points, and constructive feedback. Student responses indicate that these reinforcements had a positive effect on their enthusiasm for learning and classroom engagement. However, students also emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in the distribution of reinforcement. This study provides an initial contribution to understanding naturally emerging reinforcement strategies and their relevance for further development as systematic instructional approaches in higher education.
