Abstract

This study investigates the development, implementation, and impact of the Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction (ARCS) model in physics education. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using the PRISMA approach was conducted by analyzing relevant studies published between 2016 and 2024. From an initial search of 687 articles, 9 studies indexed in SINTA and Scopus met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. This study found that research on the ARCS model in physics education shows a consistent publication trend, dominated by studies at the high school level and focused on basic physics topics such as kinematics, heat, and magnetism. The ARCS model was applied both independently and in combination with modern approaches, including flipped classrooms, e-learning, and mobile learning. The findings indicate that the ARCS model effectively enhances student motivation, learning outcomes, and conceptual understanding, demonstrating its strong pedagogical adaptability across learning contexts. However, most studies emphasize general motivation rather than higher-order outcomes. This study concludes that the ARCS model has significant potential as a flexible motivational framework in physics education, highlighting the need for future research on its effectiveness in promoting critical thinking, creativity, and concept mastery in more complex physics topics.

Abstract

This study explores ongoing motivation challenges in junior high school physics, where abstract concepts and teacher-centered methods often diminish student engagement. It aims to compare six online learning platforms Google Classroom, Canvas, Padlet, Nearpod, Genially, and Kahoot! in boosting students’ physics motivation using the ARCS framework (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction). A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent group pretest–posttest design was conducted across six junior high schools in Ngada Regency, Indonesia, involving 120 eighth-grade students (one intact class per school). Motivation was assessed with a validated 20-item ARCS-based questionnaire on a five-point Likert scale, complemented by classroom observations and teacher interviews for contextual insights. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, assumption tests (normality and homogeneity), paired-sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD post hoc analysis. Results revealed significant increases in motivation from pretest to posttest for all platforms (p < 0.001), suggesting that platform-supported physics instruction can effectively boost student motivation. Notably, motivational improvements varied significantly across platforms (F = 9.400, p < 0.001): interactive and gamified platforms, especially Kahoot! and Nearpod, yielded higher gains than more text- and task-focused platforms such as Google Classroom and Padlet. The unique contribution of this study lies in its systematic comparison of multiple platforms within the same grade level and physics topic in a non-urban setting, interpreted explicitly through ARCS. The findings highlight that interactivity and immediate feedback are crucial for motivating students and offer evidence-based guidance for physics teachers and schools in choosing and integrating digital platforms to create more motivationally engaging instruction and professional development for technology-enhanced physics education.

Abstract

Scientific abilities are essential for understanding complex physics concepts such as static fluids. However, these abilities remain low because physics instruction often emphasizes mathematical formulas and provides limited opportunities for investigative activities that connect concepts with empirical phenomena. This study aims to analyze students’ scientific abilities through the Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE) approach in static fluid learning and to identify developing indicators of scientific abilities. A mixed methods approach with an embedded experimental design was employed, involving eleventh-grade high school students assigned to an ISLE experimental class and a guided inquiry control class. Data were collected using scientific abilities tests and in-depth interviews. The results show that students in the ISLE class achieved greater improvement than those in the guided inquiry class, with an average N-Gain of 0.73 (high) and an effect size of 3.77 (very large), while the control class obtained an N-Gain of 0.30 (moderate). The highest improvement occurred in problem identification skills, whereas the lowest improvement was found in the ability to formulate testable hypotheses. These findings provide empirical evidence that the ISLE approach effectively enhances students’ scientific abilities and bridges conceptual understanding with investigative practices in physics learning, particularly for static fluid topics.

Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between representation competence and conceptual understanding of linear motion kinematics, by representation type and gender, among undergraduate students. A quantitative survey design was conducted with 228 students (136 male and 92 female) who had completed a basic physics course. Data were collected using seven validated essay items adapted from the Test of Understanding Graphics in Kinematics (TUG-K2) to measure students' representational competence and conceptual understanding across graphical, diagrammatic, and verbal representations. Descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis test, Wilcoxon test, and Pearson correlation analysis were used. Results showed that students' representation competence was generally moderate (mean=1.130) and differed significantly across representation types, while their conceptual understanding was relatively low (mean=0.419) and varied significantly across kinematics concepts. Although female students showed slightly higher average representation competence scores, no statistically significant gender differences were found in either representation competence or conceptual understanding. A strong positive correlation was identified between representation competence and conceptual understanding, indicating a close association between the two constructs. However, the correlational design does not allow causal conclusions to be drawn. These findings highlight the importance of explicitly integrating various representations into physics teaching to support deeper conceptual understanding in linear motion kinematics

Abstract

The training on making solid honey soap in an artisanal style was conducted as a form of life skill enhancement for the Indonesian diaspora in Malaysia, particularly those working in the informal sector. The partner group in this activity was students of the Klang Lama Assisted Learning Center, which is part of the Indonesian diaspora community. The training program was designed to improve participants’ competencies in creative honey soap production. The activities were carried out in three stages: the first stage involved preparation, including the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with partners, identification of participants’ needs, development of a pocket handbook, and provision of materials; the second stage consisted of implementation through material delivery and independent hands-on practice; and the final stage involved evaluation using pretest and posttest to measure improvements in participants’ skills and life skills. The evaluation results showed that 100% of the students stated that the training was beneficial, easy to understand, and provided new skills in handicraft production, particularly honey soap. Furthermore, 68.75% of the students expressed interest in making soap independently after the training. This program was proven to be effective in enhancing practical skills and life skills within the Indonesian diaspora community.

Abstract

One essential ability in physics is problem-solving ability. Problem-solving and physics are inseparable. This research aims to reveal how students solve physics problems. This research is quantitative descriptive research, namely describing students' problem-solving abilities in Static Fluid material. This research was conducted on 28 Physics education students at one of the State Universities in East Java. Data was collected through tests and in-depth interviews. The research instrument was two test items on statistical fluid problem-solving. The results show that the students' physics problem-solving abilities are still in the beginner category. Learners need to work on solving problems correctly with incomplete problem-solving aspects. The interviews showed that students' difficulties in the problem-solving process were mainly in determining the physics approach to use and bringing the physics approach to specific conditions. This analysis can help further studies of improving novice physics problem-solving abilities
