Abstract

Abstract: How is the Process of Mathematical Literacy When Viewd From the Initial Mathematical Performance? The role of mathematics functionally in the context of everyday life which refers to the ability of individuals to respond to needs and obstacles in society is known as the conception of mathematical literacy. Mathematical literacy is an important aspect that every individual has to face the 21st century, there are 3 important processes in mathematical literacy, namely formulating, employ and interpreting mathematical results into everyday problems, besides that students' initial mathematical abilities are important and related to mathematical literacy. Therefore the aim of this research is to analyze the process of mathematical literacy in terms of initial mathematical abilities. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with a subject of 3 students consisting of 1 student each with high, medium and low initial math skills in junior high school students in Cimahi. The instruments used in this study were a Mathematical Literacy test instrument consisting of 3 questions, an initial mathematical performancetest and an interview guide. The results of this study indicate that students with low performance cannot carry out the 3 processes of mathematical literacy (Formulation, employ and interpreting), students with moderate abilities can formulate problems in mathematical form and use mathematical concepts for problem solving but are still wrong in doing calculations and unable to interpret the information contained in the table/diagram. Whereas for students with high initial mathematical performance, they can formulate everyday problems in mathematical representations, they can also use concepts, facts and procedures for problem solving but are not yet precise at the stage of interpreting and communicating in writing Keywords: mathematical literacy, initial mathematical performance.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202446

Abstract

Linear equations and linear functions are important materials for students in developing their in-depth knowledge of arithmetic and algebra. However, there is a gap between potential development and actual development, which causes obstacles for students in understanding the concepts of these two materials. This gap results in other obstacles, including a fixed mindset in mathematics. The results of interviews with secondary school teachers in Indonesia also show that students have problems in number operations and motivation to learn mathematics. The design used in this study uses a descriptive qualitative study based on the results of literature studies, interviews with subject teachers, and the author's experience as an educator. This study also uses the theory of zone proximal development and mathematical mindset as a frame for preparing alternative material for equations and linear functions based on visual representations in mathematics. The results of this study contribute to providing alternative materials to reduce these barriers using a visual representation approach in mathematics. The author also provides alternative teaching arts to anticipate obstacles that arise when implementing mathematics material based on visual representation.

Abstract

Mathematical resilience is a multidimensional construct in positive psychology focusing on mental health. The education system in Indonesia changed the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This pandemic event provides an opportunity for academics to take further academic decisions in the future. Good mathematical resilience skills are needed to prepare students to carry out the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively examine mathematical resilience skills using a blended learning model during a pandemic. This type of research uses case study research and is descriptive. The research was conducted on fourth-semester students of the 2020-2021 academic year at a private university in Cirebon, West Java, with research subjects consisting of 37 students. The data was obtained from a mathematical resilience questionnaire in linear program lectures using a blended learning model. Collecting data using a questionnaire instrument was analyzed using the formula for the distribution of frequencies and percentages. The results showed that students' mathematical resilience skills using blended learning in the Linear Program courses during the Covid-19 pandemic were good; previous research on the Linear Program courses obtained good results of resilience abilities but in different samples. The existence of the Covid-19 pandemic does not have much effect on mathematical resilience abilities.

Abstract

Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK) is a skill that combines pedagogical and technological competencies to support teachers' professionalism in teaching mathematics in the era of digitalization. The purpose of this study is to determine the enhancement of TPK skills among Pre-Service Mathematics Teachers (PSMTs) who studied using a Digital Project Learning (DPL) approach compared to those who learned using a conventional approach. The research method used was an experiment with a posttest-only control group design. The research was conducted in the mathematics education study program at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta during the 2023/2024 academic year, with the research sample comprising students from two classes enrolled in Mathematics Learning Strategy (MLS) courses. Seventy-two students enrolled in a mathematics learning strategies course were divided into an experimental group (n=34) and a control group (n=38). The instrument used in this study is a rubric-based observation sheet to assess students' TPK. The results showed that students in the experimental class had better TPK skills compared to PSMTs in the control class. This can be seen in the skills for designing learning and teaching, and in the diversity of technology use. Therefore, DPL is efficacious in improving the TPK skills of PSMTs.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the content validity of geometry teaching materials designed for Grade VII junior high school students. These materials were developed using the Connecting, Organizing, Reflecting, and Extending (CORE) instructional model, supported by Wingeom software, to enhance students' conceptual understanding of geometry. To assess validity, expert validation was conducted using structured questionnaires. Six categories of experts participated: subject-matter experts, media experts, mathematicians, school mathematicians, language experts, and learning evaluation experts. Each category included five experts. The Content Validity Index (CVI) was employed to quantify the degree of agreement among experts regarding the relevance of the materials. The results showed high content validity across all expert groups. Specifically, the s-CVI values were 0.96 for media experts, 0.98 for subject-matter experts, 0.97 for mathematicians, 0.96 for school mathematicians, and similarly high scores for evaluation and language experts. These scores exceed the commonly accepted threshold for strong content validity (s-CVI ≥ 0.90). The high CVI values indicate that the geometry teaching materials are valid in terms of content, language, instructional design, and evaluation components. Consequently, the materials are appropriate for use in further research related to mathematics learning processes at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Ways of Thinking (WoT) is a fundamental ability that is part of the mental act that students must learn to solve geometry problems. The purpose of this research was to describe how WoT is used to solve geometry problems. This research used the descriptive qualitative methodology with a holistic case study design and data collection techniques such as tests, interviews, observation, documentation, and triangulation. The subjects in this research were 35 fourth-grade students from Sambas Regency Public Elementary Schools, Indonesia. The research focused on three students with varying levels of cognitive abilities: low, medium, and high. The results showed that students with high, medium, and low cognitive capabilities performed mental acts with the corresponding WoT. Students with high, medium and low cognitive capabilities were more likely to work on questions that required interpretation. Besides, it also revealed that errors committed students were learning errors, reading errors, careless errors, conceptual errors, and procedure errors. The implementation of WoT on the topic of geometry can be utilized as an alternate reference for mathematics teachers when developing teaching materials for mathematics learning to increase studentss' mathematical knowledge.
